Based on survey data from research firm GEM Partners targeting a total of 180,000 people. The "Oshikatsu MAP" compiled by the survey reveals the gender ratio and average age for each entertainment genre.

The survey data covers all forms of entertainment, but below we'll focus on games only.

The game with the youngest average age, and the only one with an average age in their teens, is Supercell's "Brawl Stars."

IP with game apps for smartphones has a relatively young average age, with many titles featuring people in their 20s.
On the other hand, IP focused on home game consoles has a higher average age , while titles with a long history seem to be mostly made up of people in their 30s and 40s.

The average age of users of both Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest is in their early 40s. Although FF and Dragon Quest are also available on mobile devices, the average age is still high.
By genre, sports and shooter games have a significantly lower average age. PvP games tend to have more young players . Additionally, the majority of users of PvP and sports games are male.

Interestingly, shooters not only have a similar age mix, but also a similar gender mix : Valorant, Fortnite, and Apex all have a similar ratio of around 85:15.
Whether by coincidence or fate, "Pokemon" and "Fate" are completely different in terms of starting point and subsequent development, but they seem to be very similar in two areas: average age and male-female ratio.

miHoYo, known for Genshin Impact and the Honkai Impact series, mainly produces games that can be played on smartphones, so in addition to the low average age, it is also notable that there is not a significant bias in the gender ratio.

So male gamers are still the majority of consumers by a long shot and women still gravitate to the same old stuff they've been playing for ages like Animal Crossing and Idol games proving that women have different tastes than men?

All the insistance on female mcs in every fucking game on the market made me think otherwise... I mean... I thought for sure the inclusion of women football would make a huuuuge difference in the football game genre bringing in the mythological modern female audience that's been waiting for their representation to join the game.

Just take the L at this point you shitty industry with your shitty analysts that can't make an accurate assessment on this industry if their lives depended on it.

I could've told you that five years ago,for free, and spared you all from all the bombing dei money disasters you've collected like stamps this entire generation!

*EDIT: I just realized it said Japan only so in that sense it's expected but curious to see one for US where all the gender swapping occurs to see how big of a dent it actually makes,if any.

It's weird that some dude my age only plays old school rpgs and I love the genre. The more I age the dumber these age polls get. Maybe cause idgaf what age I am and/or what game I'm playing is.

Zelda having 40 % female fans in Japan seems like a big achievement for an action adventure series, those are normally fully dominated by male gamers.

Careful with that statement because maybe just a case of my brother already said. Something similar happened to Bayonetta where the franchise were popular on both sexes, but mostly for the wrong reasons.

Younger gen is cooked

Look at all that anime gacha crap
I saw a cashier who wore a necklace with a Genshin Impact character once. She was very cute 20-something. I stood there frozen being surprised at this WTF moment and her looking exactly my type. I wanted to tell her about my shitty gacha luck to break the ice. But social anxiety hit me hard and I never uttered a word to her as she finished scanning my products. That and the fact that I look like Shrek nowadays.

Its the same situation in the west. Anyone buying a single player game is in 99 % of cases 30y+. Single player games are synonymous with millenials and gen X gamers.

Some of the splits are hard to believe
Only one thats bit hard to believe, considering its japanese players(so weird af from westerner pov) to me is yakuza series being only 60:40 in favour of guys, on the other hand women are aroused by manly men(they tell lies what makes guys attractive, its proven in tons of reaserch already to be more politically correct/to not be looked at as weird/primal etc and for example crying in front of ur gf makes u very untratractive, which is exactly opposite to what many women tell/pretend to want ;p ), and on top of that yakuza series is super romanticized, more like a drama tv series than actual realistic yakuza story :P

We still gotta remember in terms of singleplayer games when u got female players it doesnt mean they bought game full price at launch, many of those simply play what male gamer in their proximity bought and is avaiable to them- example:
Boyfriend bought 10 AAA singleplayer games per year, his gf played and enjoyed 8 of them, yet she paid for 0, hell she could put more hours into gaming this year than he did, yet from dev/publisher perspective she is useless as a customer xD

So the Yakuza rumours were true. It seems woman gamers in Japan also embrace a certain of action adventure type of games, considering the Genshin/Zelda numbers.

Gender preferences aside, the thing that should worry most is the split in preference before and after 25.

Zelda's got more female players than I expected. I think the open-world Zeldas are more approachable to women.

That and in my experience a TON of female gamers just love Link.

Given that Animal Crossing New Horizons is the best selling full priced game ever in Japan, and the majority of its buyers are women, that actually means that for some genres, women can actually take some full priced games to the top selling spot, at least in Japan.

Both zelda and link look feminine af for the most part, those games arent about brutality/blood/sex, so tons of girls/women can be interested in it.
Now imagine link looking like this:
And being brutal rapist aka viking, world setting is dark af, suddenly that kind of "zelda game" would have minimal amount of female audience :P
I just described(kinda) first 3 God of War games, amazing series btw but i guarantee u at least those first 3 had abysmall female adience(and even lower paid customer female audience ;p ).

U can tell male teenagers/young adults were target audience here :D

Not surprised about the Yakuza games, they have tons of drama and muscular men taking off their clothes everytime they fight.

The gender swapping bullshit amongst other things is why I wouldn't trust any statistics from the US on this matter. Too many feminists and other ideologues with an agenda here.

Really surprised at the amount of women playing the Yakuza series. I mean the series generally seems to be aimed at dudes.

Kiryu is a probably a pretty popular character with women.
has a nice body, is generally a likeable guy, part of his story is taking care of little kids in an orphanage etc

The story for each game is also very enticing, I would say. The series has a lot going for it, so I can't say I'm too surprised at the large percentage of women playing it.
