Generation NEX Impressions

Finally got this today, it's pretty cool. It's actually much smaller than I thought. Seems to work well, haven't put a ton of time in yet. Controller actually isn't to bad, there are four buttons, with the top two being start and select. There are also turbo and slow buttons. Regular old NES controllers work as well. Cartridges snap in, and the two I tried worked right away no problem (no blinking). It has composite out and fake stereo sound (i.e mono sent to two speakers)

Here's some pics

The only thing I had really heard about this piece of equipment I read over here

Kinda sucky, but maybe you'll enjoy it more.

Weird, I've tried several games (Nemo, Faxanadu, Duck Tales, Mega Man 3, Crystalis) for awhile each and they all seemed to work well (sound included). We'll see, I'll try some more stuff later in the day.

I have no Famicom stuff so I can't test, but it does have a slot on top for Famicom cartridges.

How are the pads? More importantly, did you have to blow into the cartridges every now and again?

I was actually expecting the worst with the pads, but they're not bad. The d-pad isn't bad so far, the buttons seem solid. What's weird is that they put shoulder buttons on the top that replicate the A-B buttons, I'm not sure who would use that. Haven't used the Turbo/Slow buttons yet. So far every cartridge has worked on the first try (Note I did clean them beforehand). They snap in like an SNES or top loader NES. I haven't had too much playtime (also playing X360) but I'll try to update if I run into any problems with games or the hardware.

I've read in a few places that the system bites, which really sucks because I was interested in picking one up. For more info..

EDIT: a bit late...

It's definitely not perfect (i.e I can confirm Castlevania III does not work). But most of my stuff seems fine, and I'm just using it as a secondary system to fool around with. Just tested StarTropics, seems to work perfectly. Mario 3, Super C, and Ninja Gaiden II all seemed to work fine. The audio is a little wonky sometimes (part of Crystalis sounded a little rough and quiet). As I said, not perfect, but my NES is really problematic so I can use this for most everything and break that out occasionaly if I have a hankering for some Castlevania III or other stuff that might not work.

So the FC Game Console USA Version--the Neo Fami with an NES cartridge slot and NES controller ports--remains the best NES clone?

That's not saying much, because its NES-on-a-chip is no better than the one found in most famiclones. Also, the NES-compatible version has the same problems with Castlevania III and other games that the NEX does. The incompatible games do work on a Neo Fami with a NES cartridge adaptor, though.

Anymore NEX impressions?

I'm curious if the company fixed the crosswired Famicom slot, or if they're continuing to sell the miswired units.

Can't answer the Fami question (don't have any games), but i've used it a bit more since the original post. It's very mediocre, but still does the job most of the time. One weird thing is that the volume is often very, very low. You can turn it up, but you've got to turn it up a lot. On the other hand, most games work pretty good and look accurate. Lately I've played Little Nemo, Guardian Legend, Castlevania 2, Duck Tales, and they all were working fine. I don't think it's 100% accurate (don't know for sure, haven't done a side-by-side comparison). Some games the color is clearly a little off, and others the sound is a little weak (Crystalis, for one)

The controller is throw away, but it works with original ones so it's not a problem. Overall, not worth the 60 dollars probably, but it's ok as a backup system if you've got money to burn. I think it's probably more worthwhile to replace connectors on an old NES, which I'm going to do as well.
