Genki has announced Tokyo Xtreme Racer, its first new console racing game in 18 years. It will launch for PC via Steam in 2025 with English, Japanese, and Simplified Chinese language support.

The Tokyo Xtreme Racer series, known as Shutoko Battle in Japan, began with Shutoko Battle ’94 for Super Famicom in 1994. Other notable entries in the series include 1999’s Tokyo Xtreme Racer for Dreamcast, 2003’s Tokyo Xtreme Racer 3 for PlayStation 2, and 2006’s Import Tuner Challenge for Xbox 360.

So is it only coming to PC? Who TF wrote that article? Confusing everyone in two lines of text, gg.

They should just port Wangan Midnight Maximum Tune 6RR+ to PC and call it a day. Instead of having to play on Teknoparrot, I would love to play an official release. I would say the only difference is the open highways versus closed highway portions of this. If Koshiro does the music, then insta-buy day 1.

As Genki helped with some assets back in the current Namco's propietary engine for WMMT (which has been used since WMMT4), I wouldn't be surprised if it's super close to WMMT.

Also fuck Initial D. Hakone-style mountain racing has been now seen to oblivion. The only good thing in ID was the original manga/anime.

Genki released a puzzle game on Steam just a month ago. Glad to see them active as a developer again, even if I'm not a fan of the racing stuff.

Cool! I heard this was one of the more beloved series so nice to see it back.

Sega should be taking serious notes

Cores, shaders and BIOS oh my!
Noice, hope it's awesome. Needs some drifting like Drift King '97.

Anyone else notice that in Tokyo Xtreme Racer the passing lights affect the cars in races but in Tokyo Xtreme Racer 2 they only do so in the replays? At least I don't think that's an emulation flaw. Maybe a bug in the game? Kinda makes no sense.

It's been almost 2 decades. Please Genki. Please do it right. This is the most hyped I've been for a game in ages!

idk if I ever loved txr but I certainly appreciated it. Played plenty when I was younger jdm nut hanger. Now that I'm an older jdm nut hanger I can afford speeding tickets.

I really hope they go all in on customisation in this and have Devs working there that are familiar with the japanese car scene.

they could make a really cool RPG-lite campaign here if they do it right.

More local light sources was quite a bit more costly to compute on older consoles - it could also be an optimization.
Hard to tell just by looking though, and TXR games did use to be made on pretty short time-frames.

I played the ever loving shit out of Tokyo Extreme Racer Zero back in the day.

I remember having to change the PS2s internal clock to different times to get rivals to show up. lol good times.
