Geoff Keighley: PS4 Used Game DRM (EDIT: but now apparently on hold)

But seriously, looks like my choice of console will be the one with the least DRM. I'm scared... Somebody hold me :(
 
Sounds like he's just stating random speculation and doesn't actually have insider info as to what Sony is doing. No different then the MS crowd on here stating Sony is going to do every single, stupid thing MS is doing because they can't do it alone.

..how is it not the same? I've gamed on PC my whole life and we've had CD keys and non-transferrable digital licenses for years and years. The used PC game market was killed a long time ago by the same sort of tactics.
 
I just can't believe that they would kill majority of their Japanese sales (console with anti used system will be doa in Japan). Like rumours have said they probably will leave it to the publisher to decide.
 
If it's true they will have to say it themselves like MS did. When that happens, get the stones ready.

Also, this has been talked about and it looked like they will let the publisher decide.

EA is going to take more shit than either MS or Sony.
 
They can already do this on the ps3 if they want. I expect ea to do it but not Sony first party, whom I predict will stick to online passes
 
Sounds like he thinks some publishers are going to implement it, not the console itself. Which is what everyone predicted for a while. What a thread title.

Wonder if Sony does on their first parties like the online pass. Can't really dodge criticism if they do it.
 
This isn't surprising, but the headline isn't totally correct.

Sony and MS both said they will support used games. However, they haven't released the "how". That's because both of these systems will likely have to activate your games to your account, and it will become a part of your digital games library. Once you have that system in place, it becomes a bit more complicated for Sony or MS to make selling used games as easy as it is today. However, the benefits of such a system is that you don't need to swap discs anymore, and you can just download any game onto any Xbox where you're logged in. You also aren't screwed if you either break or lose your discs. The only times I've bought a used game this gen is when I've broken or lost the discs, especially multi-disk games like LA Noire. I even remember how pissed I was when I got a scratch on the third disc for FF7 on the original Playstation.

It sounds like for the One that the processing of selling a used game will be the same as it is today. You just take the game to GameStop and you're good to go. The process will be different for the Gamestop employees as they now have to scan a code to deactivate it, but as consumers we shouldn't care about that.

However, there are details on how you can do private party selling, and they haven't given the details about that. For all we know, it's done purely through the software now. What if they have a system like Amazon has for the Kindle where you can lend your friend a game digitally through XBL, or you can sell it digitally in some marketplace. These are the details that we do not know.

Or else it'll be Wii U/PC for me for next gen. I'll invest in a 780GTX instead.
 
Sony has a patent for an anti used games system where they put an rfid chip on gamediscs. Chip gets imprinted with the console id once you put the disc in.This system would work without an internet connection
 
Dudes seriously I think Microsoft and Sony are playing under one roof on this one. Lets send the antitrust authority on their asses!!! Fuck their cartel money grabbing shit!

Same here, but I am honestly expecting it. Although, I do think they will just leave it up to publishers instead of making it an integral part of the hardware design. In which case, some of the games from smaller publishers will be able to be played offline. I think that is a best case scenario at this point.

Hell yes. Trusting Sony and MS to solely dictate value among games is just fucking stupid stupid. We have decades of proof they wont be consumer friendly or at least in the same league as the PC. The close nature of consoles is a completely different business model. IF you think the console market will adjust game value the same as the pc with these 2 companies at the helm, you are kidding yourself. I never buy used games, but I still benefit from price pressure the 2nd hand market brings. With that gone, all we have is the incompetence of MS and Sony to contract the market.

True, they've dropped them for PS3 and 360 as well, right? Those console aren't getting any used game restrictions.

I'm not saying it wouldn't have happened even if MS didn't announce it already and of course this benefits publishers more directly than Sony and MS (who take damage from lack of cheap used games - maybe I'm overstating this actually).

But MS pushing this as a clear incentive to publishers, as they already have, would have required Sony to match them too.

Perhaps Sony would have done it without MS doing it. Given the differing approaches the companies have been taking, it seems the latter was never going to happen but with the former, who knows.

Hopefully they won't be encouraging/mandating anything but leaving it to publishers.

Used copies might help keep the game alive through word of mouth? Or will they always opt for it?
 
having =/= using. some major developers may have forced them to create it, but for the use of developers who want it. So yeah, it's only a matter of boycotting games that use it and they won't do it ever again.

Here's what was actually said:

Are all of those things optional, though? For people who have broadband data limits, for example? They can customise everything?

I can play my Steam games without an internet connection as well. However, installing my new game requires it. I suspect Sony will do the same.
 
Well that does save me some money for a new graphics card in a few years. And maybe for a Wii U if enough games attract me.

Exactly. Why would I deal with an xbone/ps4 future of drm crap when I can have a pc, deal with the drm and have a huge catalog of games to play that I can buy from steam sales?

It's a no brainer.
 
Sony will most likely leave it up to the pubs and most of them will use it .
I can see next gen i going to buy less games if i buy any system at all .
 
Won't buy it if there is any sort of always online DRM thing, or anything that prevents me from lending a physical disc to a friend without having to jump through a hoop.
 
PS4 could at least take a half measure and just push digital more like the wii u is doing. they didn't need to go full used game DRM. will not buy any of this shit.

yea because you own a PC and you can do whatever you want with it, no bullshit no risks of buying yourself into an uncompetitive marketplace.
 
If Sony lets publishers decide, then it's of course very different from what Microsoft is planning. What are people thinking? That Sony can just say to EA and Ubisoft that they aren't allowed to use such a feature?
