Geoff Keighley response to an IGN article about NexGen Graphics

I'm so OVER graphics and have been for a long, long time. Give me art-style, mood/atmosphere, brilliant audio-design/music. In terms of presentation, that's far more important than horsepower for me.

Advancement in technology as it relates to my interest in gaming is near absolute zero.

Wait what ? The gpu isn't many times faster than best current . It's not even on bar with 2080 /1080ti ...

unless I understood your wordings wrong Then my apologies
Best current GPU in a console (i.e. Xbox One X). I'm comparing current gen consoles to next gen. Obviously PC hardware will be beyond what is in next gen consoles.

They're probably right. Games looked great at the beginning of this gen and, while they definitely looked better by the end, we didn't really see the kind of jump we have seen with previous generations. I mean, look at stuff like Killzone: Shadowfall (2013) and InFamous Second Son (2014). They both still completely hold up today.

I doubt the early games on PS5 and XBX are going to look all that much better than stuff like RDR2 and TLOU2, etc.

IGN are talking nonsene . When people 1st saw Halo running onthe OG Xbox it was slated for not great graphics and terrible frame rate . When the 360 was shown off at E3 2005 lots were unimpressed.

And I'm don't agree we have seen massive jumps this gen . Play RE 5 and then play RE 2 Remake .Play Forza horizon on the 360 and play Forza horizon 4 on just the base Xbox One. The PS 5 and Series X will be handling and displaying stuff that this gen cant cope with , even early in IMO

Wait, are you saying you don't think RE5 and Forza Horizon 4 this generation look massively better than RE5 and Forza Horizon on the 360?

I'm saying we have seen massive jumps this gen , even with limited Jaguar CPUs . Next gen is going to be a huge jump on CPUs alone

Huge jump in CPU power is certainly going to allow for a lot more interesting stuff to happen, but I'm skeptical that most games are going to look a ton better than late-gen PS4/XBO stuff outside of resolution and frame rate. When it comes to making incredible looking character models and environmental assets, developers already weren't limited by the hardware this generation.

Remember wallguy? Was one of the first looks at what the 360 could do so it's still early days.

Bad screenshot, great looking game.
Overall, 360 games looked amazing at launch and first few years

I dunno man, I got a 360 after Gears came out so maybe my experience would be different if i got it at launch but I remember thinking it looked pretty underwhelming, like an xbox game slapped with next gen features. Every texture looked like it had bump mapping applied without any regard to whether it actually looked good.

Forza horizon 4 can run at 4K 60fps on 5700 XT. Of course PS5 GPU should be be a little bit faster, but can we really expect much better graphics than this?

I think the biggest difference between current gen and next gen will be 4K and 60fps, maybe better textures thanks to SDD, but that's it.

Maybe but I was a pc gamer ever since and when 360 came out, my mind was blown away. Perfect Dark zero, Kameo, Dead Rising, Gears, Lost Planet, Prey, The Darkness, Gta iv, Burnout Paradise. incredible looking games at the time which were not available or very difficult to run on pc. First 2-3 years, those consoles really rocked hard.

Developers will always be limited by hardware.

Kameo, Gears, Dead Rising, and Lost Planet really blew me away at the time. Never planned on buying a Microsoft console, but those games pushed me over the edge along with the announcements for JRPGs.

I mean, it's obivous. RDR2, GoW, Spider Man and other game's graphics are not even standard in this gen, XSX and PS5 are going to surpass it easily by 2021/22

IGN is just plain stupid

haha I get ya. I recently started Lost Odyssey and it still looks good

YES, YES, YES! Soooooo much this. I'm so god damn bored of hyper realism graphics.

What I really want is for developers to bring their concept art to life.

It's a shame that we have this brilliant blank digital canvas to create upon, and the only thing many developers can imagine is, "How can I make something as realistic as possible?"

Don't get me wrong, there's plenty of great and imaginative stuff in gaming, but NONE of it (for me) is dependent on ever-increasing hardware power - certainly not at this stage.

I wish we'd (collectively) chase developing the imagination and creativity of expression rather than focus heavily on brute force hardware strength.

At least he's not hosting something for GameStop. That's when you know they'll lie straight to your face.

It's not like next gen graphics would do anything other than look good. Eye candy has been a thing for decades.

I think current tech is still far off from doing this kind of concept art justice so let them keep doing whatever is need to push tech to a point where it can give us something that actually looks like this.

hahaha what the fuck dude,
worst post on neogaf 2020 contender.

Writing an article about how we should lower our expectations because a bunch of indie games that are all cross-gen looked underwhelming is kinda ridiculous, but that's IGN for you.

This is kinda my question. Ray Tracing will be an improvement, but that will cost performance, so lighting will look better, but will it have issues maintaining 4k60?

The thing is, up to a certain point, doing things realistically is easier because a lot of people are doing it. Take as an example physicall based rendering: it's baked in by default and although it requires obvious knowledge and skills to use it well and artists that know how to take advantadge of it, the fact it's become a standard means the shared pool of resources is greater.

I'm talking specifically about PD Zero, after playing Gears then downloading and trying PD zero I was underwhelmed, because of the high bar set by Gears, which was amazing looking.

Next GEN will be very impressive. You can't go by that horrible Xbox event. That event was absolute garbage and not representative of the HW possibilities.

I've been preaching this for months now. Next-gen = PC this gen. People are in denial.

sorry if i missed this but where is Geoff going to be make this IGN story age badly? Live stream somewhere?
Unless he is going to live stream the majority of cross generation games he won't make the article look bad if he took 2 seconds to read it. The article was correct cross generation games that will be shown over the next few months won't be impressive. Not exactly going out on a limb. The article even said some exclusives would look good.

No doubt, people said the same last-gen and even at the start we saw Killzone 4 and Ryse look miles better than what the 360 or even the mighty Cell could handle and no developers weren't limited this gen with underpower CPU's and slow data flows?

It's not just screen res and Frame rate where we will see big jumps IMO

geoff keighley aka the biggest hype machine there is in the industry. Hed hype a dead horse even
Geoff Keighley in a nut shell. And this guy is supposed to be a journalist? Read his WIki.

Advertisers: Hey Geoff, here's some cash to plug Doritos, Mountain dew and Halo
Geoff: Hook me up. The more shit to show on screen the better. I don't care if I'm surrounded with it
Advertisers: Done
Geoff: Hey everyone, buy a bag of Doritos, drink Dew and play Halo

IGN: Lower your next expectations
Advertiser: Hey Geoff let's do a lead in for Summer Fest with Unreal 5
Geoff: Hook me up. As a teaser, I'll even downplay an IGN article for more cash
Advertiser: Done
Geoff: IGN article won't age well
Geoff: Here's Unreal 5
