Convinced this is PR. Question is, is it because they want to "shock" us with a $399 announcement, or are they bracing us for the fact that it is actually $499?

I hope it's as others have said, and that Geoff is doing this to scare MS into dropping it to $399 by conference time...

$499 is too much and everyone knows that, especially the folks that chose PS4 over XB1 in large part because of the latter's $499 price tag.

Yeah it's either that, or so they can "surprise" everyone by saying it's $399 after everyone spends a day thinking its $499.

If it is a controlled leak, then the reason would be so this is out of the way, and people already had their reaction on forums and social media about it, so the press conference itself doesn't get overshadowed by it. Or at least that might be the intent.
I just don't see them leaking a higher price at this point in some attempt to create a false narrative of negative emotions around your product.

Not true. Scorpios value prop is different than the pro's, where as the one was upside down compared to the PS4.

A better journalistic strategy is not leak if they come to you. If you hear it on the grapevine from credible sources when they don't come to you, leak the shit out of it
are you saying ms says it's 499 and told Geoff to tell people or are you saying they're using him to "leak" the wrong price?
We'll see. I have my doubts that most developers will even put the extra effort in for a $500 mid-gen upgrade.

And for why Geoff would do this with nothing to gain. Sure he does. He has coverage of E3 and always hype stuff up. Someone as MS may of very well told him its $499 and he believes it. But they know it will be $399. If it is truly $499 MS learned nothing from the Xbox One.

They are selling another console that plays the exact same games for a much lower price.
This isn't a mass market consumer product, it's niche.
Scorpio does not replace the Xbox One, it compliments it and fleshes out the product line.

Hmmm, I doubt Geoff would stake his "confidence" on false information and that MS paid him to lie, haha. I am sure Geoff probably thought long and hard before pasting that info, so I am sure there is a lot of credibility to it.
Having said that $500 is a lot of money for a mid gen upgrade I guess.
I'm assuming the Scorpio is a response to the PS4. And I'm not sure whats going to happen. Sony can drop the pro to $300, and I think Scorpio could be in trouble.

You can't compare this to the 100 price difference at launch of the base consoles. At the time, MS was selling a weaker console and justifying the extra cost with gimmicks that no one wanted (Kinect/TV pass through). This time they're doing it on specs. The S will still be their play at the mass market.
People need to stop it with this. If that was the case make it 399 and ditch the elite controller. It's not coming with a Elite controller for the base model. It makes zero sense cost wise.

I don't think he will be happy to be used for a Microsoft's PR stunt or consciously participate in.
One possibility is that will be two SKUs and he only knows about the more expensive.
Not for folks who already have an Xbox One and just want to upgrade.
