Control was the first Remedy game I actually liked despite some of its weaknesses. I liked the idea and atmosphere and thought the gameplay felt good.
Storytelling was still kinda meh, you really have to like reading documents and try to make sense of them (or watch people on yt make sense of it).
The one thing I really disliked was that one bossfight. I think "The Former" it was called. That wurm like thing. Its not like you died because it was too strong and killed you, no.
You were just constantly falling down the level because the camera simply doesnt show the floor beneath, or behind you.
So, for people who dont know. This is a 3rd person shooter with the camera being somewhat close to your character. This boss attacks you with huge melee attacks that you can simply dodge by using your...well dodge ability. But sometimes (not all the time though) its melee attack will destroy parts of the floor and you can fall down that hole.
So most of the times I walked or dodged back just to fall into a hole because the camera was too close to my butt to show whats behind me.
Ok, then use levitate you might say, but at some point you will slowly levitate down and just softly fall into a hole with know way to get back up, because again....you cant see whats below you with the camera. And you cant just keep refocusing your camera to somewhere it doesnt want to look because you still have to dodge and and backfire its projectiles. Also you cant levitate forever, so you need to get down at some point. And as it happens I havent scaled levitate a whole bunch, because outside of that boss its not necessary to fly for longer periods of time.
So, ok. There is a bad boss fight. It happens. You die a lot and eventually beat him. Fine.
Oh here he is again. Great. Yeah. Good design. Perfect. Guess I'll die a bunch again. Well. Defeated him again after some frustr....ANOTHER ONE??? MOTHERFUCKER!
They decided to recycle that stupid boss a bunch of times. Not really great design, especially when you think about the fact that some of the more interesting bosses are optional in this game. Just kind of weird. But I put up with it.
I'm currently playing through the DLC. And I have to say its really nothing special. I think I should have saved that money. Because now the problems of the main game (that many criticized but I didnt find all that bad) really came through. Very repetitive combat with only a small amount of weapons, abilities and enemies. It was somewhat fine during the main game, but with DLC you think they might be a bit more creative. While there is new stuff, it really doesnt change how you play. You still use the same weapons, abilities and strategies from the main game. The story is even less existent and more cryptic than in the main game, which makes it really hard to keep interested in it, when you know you probably wont understand a thing in the end. Thats just frustrating.
So yeah, I was wonderi...AGAIN??? YOU GOT TO BE FUCKING KIDDING ME?! Again with the same Boss. Fucking hell. And its still the same problem. Even worse, because the combat arena is even smaller. After dying a bunch I turned it off in frustration. The DLC wasnt giving me any big enjoyment to begin with and that boss just gave me the rest.
Is there a reason to keep playing the DLC? Does the story become somewhat more clear or is there any new gamplay or cool sections like the ashtray mace coming up? If not, I might just call it a day on that one.
