Being a big fan of the new 'Stand Alone Complex' series, I decided to give the original 1995 movie a rent as, sadly enough, I've never seen it. All in all, I think it was great - obviously slower paced than the series, but it had a great sort of Blade Runner vibe to it. Now I've never read the manga the movie's based on, and this may be answered there, but why is Major Kusanagi so adamant about always having her clothes off? Is it necessary for the stealth stuff to work, as other characters in the movie seem to be using it without a problem in that regard? Is it some obvious case of symbolism that I'm overlooking? Is there some reference to this in the manga? Surely it's not just pointless fanservice. Thanks anime-fan GAFers...

Pointless fanservice. Kosunagi is teh HOTT. Masamune Shirow draws robots and HOTT CHIXX. You're thinking about it too much.

What's significant is your image. There's meaning in that, my son.

Well now that the question has been answered... I'll go a bit off-topic:

Am I the only one who thinks 2nd gig is better than the first season? And that's saying a lot. @_@

Shirow is a huge fanservice nut; there is a reason why his Intron Depot art series sells so well.

Both movies have no timeline connection to Standalone Complex, so I try not to think about them too much. That being said, Kusanagi does have a reason of sorts behind her wardrobe - she doesn't really care. The only parts of her body that are original happen to be part of the spine and brain, so in the context of the movie/TV series, part of the argument has always been a reduced interest in clothing (ie: as long as you wear the legal minimum, there's not really a disadvantage from her perspective)

A pretty important example of this debate comes from an early episode of the 1st season of Standalone Complex - the business owner who lives as a tiny quadriped, with an AI person to act as the "puppet", so to speak. Today's features of human proportion and fashion gone the way of Barbie Dolls and toy robots.

Cloaking devices are not hindered by clothing in the context of the movie, although in the TV show they are worn as additional equipment, so I imagine there are some restrictions.

I think that depends how the final episodes go, because first season ended on a pretty big high. That being said, making the obvious guess about the white-haired fellow tells me that the show will continue to put in more character development than any part of the series has ever even tried.

Which is great, because as cool as Togusa is, he can't be the only developed guy on the show.

The early 2nd GiG episode with the helicopter chase is right up there with the most amazing animation/music combination moments in anime, though.

Thanks, that's what I was looking for. Apart from the Major's usual outfit and a cheescake butt shot now and then, they don't seem to go too overboard with the fanservice in SAC. That said, I may have to check out that Intron Depot series you mentioned.
:D
