I watched the shit out of GI Joe growing .
We had a local channel showing reruns of GI Joe and ThunderCats back to back daily after school and I think I watched every episode half a dozen times.

Me too GI Joe the Movie and the specials that launched the series at least are Japanese animated and the voice actors were fabulous. I was just really surprised it was still highly watchable after all these years.

They were allowed to write GI Joe for a slightly older audience than most cartoons of the time so it tends to have some interesting elements. Still lots of goofy and wtf stuff to be found but it's easier to watch than contemporaries like Transformers (Not counting the movie) due to that.

One thing though, although GI Joe is always remembered for it's lack of violence, it was one of the last cartoons that allowed "violent" fisticuffs where they could regularly clock human characters in the face without having to use a screen flash or punching toward the screen. You didn't really see that kind of thing again until the WB superhero shows and even those mostly held back on that until the US got a taste of Dragonball. =P

It’s still entertaining but the incessant cries of “Yo Joe” and “Cobra” mar it somewhat. The comic is so much better.

I could never get into the comics for GI Joe or Transformers. Never had a comic shop nearby when I was a kid but a fellow 5th Grader had two Transformers omnibus that he brought to school. I was so excited to see my favorites again only to be utterly disappointed by it. Same with GI Joe.

It was always be the Sunbow shows for me.

Scarlett gave me my first taste for love of redheads.

Also - Duke and Scarlett forever.

The best episode "no place like springfield" Shipwrecks VO nailed it.

That was always a good 2-parter. I noticed in current versions they censored the synthoid of Shipwreck's daughter being melted.

Same studio did Pryde of the X-Men, which was 100x better than the 90s series in terms of animation quality.
Yeah Toei was one of the go-to companies for Sunbow.

The sad part is, with the budget the 90's X-Men had they could have done the show close in quality to the Pryde pilot. Unfortunately they went with Akom who are full on atrocious but they work for cheap... =P

The comic allowed for a much more mature template at storytelling, it actually had mortal stakes compared to the relatively safe cartoon. Truth be told though it was all about the toys more than anything, ‘82 to ‘86 were the golden years.
