Giant Bomb #8 | It's a Hit!

I watched the Mario Party last night and it was amazing. Even as frustrated as Jeff was, his still put on a good show.

I hope that, if they do this again, they learn from their mistakes and gang up on Dan.

Mario Party can be an extremely fun game with friends.

That said...Dan's talk of how it's a fantastic game and "not that unfair" is complete horseshit though.

A simple block spinning game at the end of a 50 turn marathon session can swap the scores of first and last place. Now that's fucking funny, complete and utter broken bullshit, but funny.

I think multiplayer warioware (I played a ton of the gamecube on with my friends) is 1000x better than marioparty.

That's one of the most genuine and from the bottom of the heart "fuck you" I've heard in a long time.

Karma's a mean old lady, Brad.

they need to play the best Mario Party game next

disclaimer: this game is pure shit

Something I thought that was a bit odd from the latest Bombast, Drew saying that he doesn't have any current-gen console yet, and neither does anyone he plays with have one. He works for GiantBomb, an office full of people with the current gen consoles, so don't the duders play together much over PSN or Xbox Live outside of the office?

damn Bowser is a dick LOL

The best Mario spin-offs always separate Bowser from the playable cast, instead giving him the role of "guy who tries to fuck everyone over all the time". Mario Smash Football is the best example of this, with Bowser only showing up to either a) jump onto the pitch and literally try to murder the players, or b) send his team of football-playing robots to defeat you. Sadly, they made him playable in Strikers Charged.

Mario Party 10 actually takes this idea and sprints with it, with the whole game being 4 (assorted Mario characters) vs 1 (Bowser).

Doesn't seem so. Every time they talk about a new coop-ish game (like Evolve) Jeff mentions how he doesn't really have any friends who he'd play the game with.

They actually hate each other.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think that's ever been the case. That said, no one of them have been huge fans of multiplayer games for as long as the site has existed, and when they are they're fans of different games (Halo for Drew, COD and other FPS games for Jeff, Dota and Starcraft for Brad, nothing really for Vinny). The only MP story outside of work I remember is the Gears of War 2 horde mode story.

You'd think keeping current with new games and consoles would be a requirement for someone in a prominent position in a video game website, but Drew eeks by on his Halo and mobile game knowledge. I think it's somewhat unprofessional of him to make claims about this generation of consoles when he has so little experience with them. Sure, he's probably played around with them in the office, but not to the extent where I would trust or value his opinion on anything PS4/Xbox One related.

I remember when I was a kid/early teen, I bought a used Dreamcast from a record store.
When I got home I opened it up, and they accidentally left a copy of Sonic Shuffle in the system.

I played it twice with my brother and ended up returning it the next day.

I'm glad there's somebody around who hasn't bothered with the new consoles. Nice to know one of them might be a sane person.

I don't think Brad owns a Wii U yet either.

He does, he talked recently about just making a new ID since he couldn't rescue the one off Patrick's machine without a huge hassle.

He doesn't make any claims about the consoles though, just that there's nothing of interest to him there. It's not like he's saying that every game on the PS4 so far has been shit or anything, or that he's claiming to be an authority on console games.

Brad will never own a Wii U.

Look how long it took him to get a Wii.

Brad was going to buy Alex's Wii for like 20 bucks which caused greg to flip out!

There have been a few points in recent podcasts where he's thrown off the conversation with claims that were downright incorrect (I can't recall specifically, but I remember the other guys having to correct him several times). Especially with Vinny now gone from the podcast, I just wish that he would play anything current and be able to contribute meaningfully to the conversation about games.

its almost like Giant Bomb is a personality-driven website and not beholden to some kind of "cover every game from all angles regardless of desire on the part of it's staff" mentality.

or that Drew is their video producer and not an editor.

or that he plays plenty of other weirdo simulation games primarily on the PC.

huh.

I think he contributes just fine as is. Not every one of them has to be at the bleeding cutting edge of tech. I liked hearing from someone who is still in the old gen with no reason to upgrade.

I mean, dudes gonna upgrade when the Halo Collection comes out, but he's being sensible in that he's waiting for games to give him a reason to purchase a machine, instead of being like most gaffers and purchasing a machine and THEN waiting for games to come out on it

It's also a weird complaint about a podcast that spent an insane amount of time breaking down the history of GI Joes and obscure japanese ps4 digital download releases.

Yea that is interesting. Should be fun seeing the other games since they are apparently gonna go through all of them.

Also Jeff spitting that hot fire

Jeff made a declaration a while ago where he said unless it was your job, he couldn't yet justify telling people they needed to buy either a X1 or a PS4. Suppose we might be hitting around that time where that'd start to be different, but, he's been less than enthusiastic about the current set of games.

I guess I'm saying, I don't think it's Drew's job either being video and all. And there's almost nothing he'd play until Destiny/Halo hit.

Drew is a video producer, his job isn't to play games (though he does it anyway, it's only games he likes).

Everyone makes mistakes, I don't really recall him making a lot of mistakes about that stuff. And I think both Jeff, Dan and Brad plays a lot of current games. Jeff and Brad maybe not that much right now since there doesn't seem to be much out of interest to them (that's why Jeff has gone back to playing weird shit on the Japanese PSN store, Win 8 store).

Err, I really hope Alex is just offering sympathy here with this tweet and name change:

https://twitter.com/alex_navarro/statuses/494572735545495552

He's had that Twitter handle for well over a week now.

And hasn't GS been hit with layoffs on and off for a few years now? They have an incredible amount of staff for a video game website, and my guess would also be that it's a part of them focussing more on video content now.

Two of the big games this year on the new consoles are remakes of last gen games. That just about says it all.

Yeah, that's fair. I only really ever have time to listen to the podcast (and a few random quick looks here and there), so that's my main point of reference. I guess it really determines what you're looking for out of them. I enjoy each of their personalities and think they gel pretty well (especially for a team that was just shaken up again), but I'm also looking to them for opinions on new games coming out more so than obscure releases or mobile games. Jeff and Brad are really the only two who address this kind of stuff on a weekly basis (don't know what Dan's really into yet).

Don't worry about Dan. He's way into all things Nintendo, and much more. Him playing enough games to keep current will never be a problem, unless you want to hear some talk about the newest JRPG in which case you'll be SOL :)

It's sucks that people are losing jobs but Gamespot has always seemed over staffed to me. Hopefully, it doesn't mean Danny will have less time to pop in on GB stuff.

Yeah, it's horrible but I kinda agree. It's clear that sites like Gamespot are now competing with the Youtube generation - who operate a lot leaner. GS do put out a lot of video content, but not that much, which is especially weird as Jeff said many reviews are done by freelancers. Obviously there was some bloat there.

I think in this day and age, if you cover games and are not an on-camera personality where people expect to see you daily/weekly (almost becoming indispensable), your future seems limited to freelance/Patreon as the salaried opportunities seem incredibly rare.

Following GS a bit since Danny's introduction on GB, I think it's safe to assume that GB puts out at least as much daily original video content as GS. And GS brought literally over 40 people to E3, so you can assume that they have been overstaffed for their needs for some time now.

I feel he's a relateable since I don't own any new systems and I don't plan to for a while, until something grabs me. And that something MIGHT be Destiny. So to hear Drew's thoughts on Destiny on the podcast last week really made me wonder whether or not it's time to commit.

I've been there - stage shows, especially involving broadcast/streamed content and many guests require a lot of hands on deck. However that can often be contracted as and when is needed so long as you have a few great permanent producers.

Probably looks like a shitty way of doing things, but I think it's just the enthusiast press normalising with the other entertainment industries who have worked like this for decades.
