Giant Bomb #8 | It's a Hit!

Jeff really overrates Burnout Paradise. It's not even the best Burnout game or the best arcade racer on the PS360.

That has partially to do with when it was released, during his unemployment and the start of Giant Bomb. He's said he got extremely lost and engrossed in the game and is probably why he holds it in such high regard.

No, I don't think he was on the GI Show (the GI podcast) much. Come to think of it, I can't remember Ryckert being a regular on that show either (even if he was on from time to time), but it's been a while since I've listened.

Jason did some independent podcast back in the day though, from what I hear, before he joined GI.

I see. I only mentioned it because I don't think he's said much, but that's probably a combination of being tired from his trip and being a new guy more than anything.

Just watching ryan videos now. That pie down the toilet is so good.

Yeah, I'm gonna watch a lot of Ryan videos this week I think. I liked Rich Gallup's comment on Twitter about the new hires having "some big New Balances to fill" :)

Agree. Still, hope he's a regular on the Bombcast in addition to Ryckert from now on. I know some people don't like the 5 man podcast, but I have no problem with it. Would understand if Jeff wants at least one person in the SF office working on other stuff while they record the Bombcast though.

so when do we get content

NEVEEER!

Yeah I like the 5 man podcasts. Just opens up more potential avenues of discussion and a larger range of games people have played. With a couple of less vocal people making up that 5, it doesn't feel overcrowded to me. It'll probably be 4 though, like you suggest, with Jason off doing video stuff. Can't see Drew getting swapped out now that he's had like a solid year run on the bombcast.

ugh these new guys have been working for GB for over a day and there's still no new content up on the site.

Looks like they'll fit right in with GB SanFran with that kind of work ethic.

Stuff always starts to go down when I go to bed. :X

Classy response by Rorie, yay for early Bombcast, Patrick being a bit unprofessional with those favs, and again, welcome Dan & Jason! :O

so when do we get content

I expect 1-2 QLs tomorrow, and then a livestream on Thursday.

Sounds like Dan and Jason were going through normal HR stuff yesterday, so I expect most of today will be Drew getting Jason up to speed with their video setup.

I would be shocked if there's no livestream at all this week, simply because of the value of letting Jason learn what to do during one.

You know what site could actually use some diversity and a new voice?

Tested.com

They have become laughably (and kind of endearingly) insular in the past year or so. Dat SF techy bubble. I guess its good that they have finally found a groove though. They just tossed things at the wall for a while post whiskey media but they found a niche now.

I will be going out in a bit and have time to listen to the bombcast. Interested in hearing the new video guy since I am not familiar with him. I know what to expect from Dan.

I still like Tested, but as I've said before here; I think they could just drop the site and focus all their energy on making video content on Youtube. Of course, I have no idea about their actual numbers (Alexa.com and such is an awful indicator), but it seems like their articles etc. get very little traffic compared to their videos on YT, and the Premium stuff was DOA because they never focused on it (or the interest wasn't there, I don't know).

It's okay. They'll find some other hugely important non-issue to be offended by and bounce around their Tumblr/Twitter echo chamber soon enough and everybody else can get back to enjoying the site.
Because everyone who talks about this is a social justice warrior amirite

So some people are actually upset that they hired "two white guys"? The fuck.

So Giantbomb HAD to hire at least one girl/black/asian/hispanic/spanish/native america/indian for all this to be ok?

Fucked up world we live in. People complain about every little thing and have to make everything this huge fucking deal.
People are upset that after acknowledging and addressing diversity issues in the industry, they continued to not do anything about it.

No one here was saying they needed to hire a minority to fulfill a quota but expressing disappointment nothing changed. I think it's fucking amazing though that it inevitably seems to come up.

Not everyone, especially here, was foaming at the mouth about this. Most of the criticism here was both valid and rational. Intended or not, posts like this just make it feel like people who disagree are unwelcome. And that's both wearying and gross.

Well I dont think Will, Norm and Adam do much content that is limited to just the site. All the main guys are pretty much making videos. Most, if not all of the articles during the week are normally handled by those freelancers.

They are hosting all their videos on youtube now anyway so I cant imagine keeping the website is that much of a money sink anyway and it doesnt hurt to have more ad revenue. And every once and a while they will have something on their that is pretty cool.

Can we really attribute it to the entire site when it's mostly patrick who's honestly the only one who actually actively participates in this debate? Not that the other duders don't care, but none of them seem as passionate about it as patrick, and none of them really bring it up unless engaged in it.

I think we can safely assume that the others don't really care that much to actually make it a factor in the hires.

Yay for Dan and Jason! UPF is going to be amazing this week, because you know Dan's either going to bring a crappy PS1 game or Yoshi's Island. Because he's that sort of person.

I also feel slightly guilty (by proxy) about stealing away two of GI's top guys. I know its a bit of an incestuous industry, and Game Informer's more than capable of finding new talent, but Im kinda not surprised to see some videos are mysteriously disappearing. Sorry Reiner!

I think that sells them short since they have addressed it in the past and seem very cognizant of representation issues in games and studios. Patrick is certainly more vocal, but I would very much hesitate saying the others don't care given what (I remember anyway) they said on the topic on the past.

My biggest problem with the new hires is the adjustment period to the voices in podcasts/QLs.

I can't tell who's who!

Jeff hadn't even said Jason's name out loud, apparently, so, that hire was probably all the video side. Unlikely hires we're made independently though, so, figure Jason and Dan threw the idea of a package deal at GB/CBSi and it was sold as little OTJ training needed and we can start pushing content as soon as possible. There are maybe a handful of people, let alone a team, in the industry that could have made a similar offer.

I'm just curious though, if you don't want them to hire a minority to fulfill a quota, what else do you want them to do about this industry wide issue? I feel Patrick is already doing a heck of a lot through his writings. Plus he's considering diversity when making future panels.

I've always thought "best person for the job" was the apropriate criteria to hire someone. Evidently not.

The internet/society is weird.

There's a pretty substantial difference between having a more diverse guest list and having a more diverse permanent staff. The problem with framing it as solely an industry issue is that it ignores the issues exists because all individual sites/studios/etc. in totality make up the problem. So people often say "Well of course diversity is good but this place shouldn't change," which is just "not in my neighborhood."

This isn't about asking them to set out to hire a woman, it's about hoping they find the people out there who are just as qualified and shake things up in a wider pool of talent. Other sites are finding talent beyond the small pool traditionally drawn from.

And to preemptively kneecap the inevitable "what if minorities aren't as qualified" thing, I'll quote EmCee:

Nobody is arguing that Dan isn't qualified or a great person to hire.

The point is a larger argument about what it means to "be qualified," especially in an industry where a lot of minorities may feel excluded and so purposefully stay away from mainstream outlets (which is where you're "supposed" to build qualifications), and their attempts to break into the mainstream in order to effect change can be stymied by the fact that they're not considered "the most qualified"; because they put their writing and/or speaking on a smaller alt site, personal blog, or,small convention panels, or game jams, and not one of the "real" outlets where everyone follows each other on Twitter and chats at every E3 after interviewing millionaire executives.
It also really ignores what a lot of people have been saying; that's there's a gross implication that a woman or minority must be less qualified by default or else there'd be more of them hired, and that "quality" is an objective thing that just happens to be almost entirely possessed by white men with years of experience at a major website or magazine.

I don't get it. One's an unofficial account run by mods and the other is an official account run by mods?

No. I think @GiantBombSquad changed their name to @GBDudersFeed, so that they don't look/sound like an official part of Giant Bomb. It's because the mods fucked up and announced the new hires early, and everyone thought that it was an official Giant Bomb announcement.

Might be of small comfort to some people, but I find it curiously reassuring just how intense the opinions regarding Giant Bomb and the new hires has been. If you've been following Giant Bomb since its conception it's kind of difficult to comprehend, in spite of their numbers and relatively niche appeal compared to other video game sites, just how influential Giant Bomb has become to the wider industry as a whole.

Being cognizant of it doesn't necessarily mean that they are actively looking to rectify it beyond mentioning the issues in the bigger picture. In the smaller picture i.e. reconstructing their personnel again after a massive shakeup, they might not necessarily see the other options as viable as the ones they've made right now, despite diversity issues. Who knows. Anything beyond that is purely speculation.

Look, here's my speculation; Ryan's death was unexpected, but Vinny's leave was definitely planned for a long time now. They would most likely have made it known in a private circle that they are looking for new hires due to this situation. I don't really think Dan and Jason would dropped somewhat comfortable jobs at gameinformer (especially dan, who is incredibly popular at gameinformer) as well as move states, without considerable thought. The hiring process I believe is more or less a formality.

While I think Dan is pretty qualified honestly this seemed like a hire based mostly on contacts. I don't think that they don't care about diversity, but Dan and Jason offers a)proven chemistry b)industry experience and most importantly c)familiarity, and not familiarity as in they're white dudes so they know them better, but they are clearly friends who didn't need time to integrate into the group and form a chemistry unlike someone who is entirely new to them.

Most excited I've been about the site in a long while. There are a lot of interesting possibilities that the guys could pursue. Once gbeast is up and running for real things will be even more exciting!

I am worried about Patricks portion of the pie though. I think he needs someone else around otherwise it starts to seem like an echo chamber in Chicago. Hopefully he can hire a more regular member of gbchitown.

Trust me, I understand why they hired them. I said as much at the start of this yesterday (though this thread moves fast.) It's why, despite any disappointment, I'm OK with it. I understand the realities and challenges Giant Bomb has faced with being staff, loss of Ryan/moving of Vinny and Patrick, the long fight for the budget for more people, etc.

My point has only ever been to explain the rational basis for the criticism going on, and respond back to the more rakish posts decrying criticism.

Tricky just needs to make 1001 spikes daily and stop re watching lost. That show hurt me so much.

There are less qualified women than men because far more men than women are interested in being part of the gaming industry. Other industries, .e.g accountants/auditors, have a lot more more females than males. And that's OK, too.

Yeah, I do understand the criticism, I guess I just don't agree with people who place the blame on giantbomb (not saying that it's you) when there are so many specifities that justifies the hires beside the diversity problem, when it really is just a much wider industry problem that minorities haven't been able to build a portfolio or make contacts like Dan Ryckert is able to.

Yeah, that's what I thought too.

Dan is the conservative choice. He's a sure bet, basically. Considering the bumpy road that Patrick (who was like barely different from the rest of the guys in the grand scheme of things) had in getting accepted by the community, I cannot blame them at all for picking Dan up. Large parts of the GB community basically just want three Jeffs and three Vinnys running the site. That's hard to please.

With that said, I do hope that in the future they branch out some more (maybe when GBeast gets clearance for hires in 2026). Dan is the "most qualified" for what Giant Bomb has always been up to this point. But GB can also be a lot more, and I think more diverse hires would allow the crew to expand our ideas of what the site can be. The magic isn't gonna die if they hire someone who can't make wrestling jokes.

But also, again, I'm excited about Dan and I thoroughly welcome him to the raging shit-hurricane that is Giant Bomb.
