Giantbomb's Endurance Run: The Third: Chrono Trigger

It was really annoying that they missed the message when they used lightning. I was so happy when Brono ran out of mp and they had to use lightning and stop spamming that crappy ice sword but then they missed the message :( Oh well, let's hope they realize that they have to use lightning for the boss at least.

Have the last two episodes been good (ie: do they seem to have learned anything? At all?)? I skipped last night's ep for Vinny and Dave's adventures through Phantasmagoria. And I don't think I can make time to watch this one tonight. :/

If I'm right, they should be getting the Dreamstone by now...

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS.

Bucca learns magic
YEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.

God that font and layout. It's funny that someone looked at this shit and said "yep, looks great!"

That said, it's even funnier that these two people who rarely have anything to do with videogames (from what I understand) and which seem to be not that well versed in videogames in general and RPGs in particular... progressed faster throught the first half hour of the game than Ryan and Patrick did.

I have no issue with them looking stuff up on the internet if it makes them play the game like it's actually supposed to be played.

It's completely discombobulating how unfocused they are when playing this, they don't seem to be enjoying the game at all.
I don't think the person you quoted was suggesting that Patrick is secretly reading FAQs. He just remembers the mechanics, the plot, the progression etc. to a degree many of us would, no matter how much time has passed since we played it last. He thinks it'd be bad entertainment, if he knew everything already. That's why he fakes not knowing, from time to time. Apropos, time mends the heart more often than it corrupts our memory. That's what you can take away from this Endurance Run.

I'm not sure if Norm is a long time gamer but I'm pretty sure Will Smith is a pretty big gamer. Anyway I actually enjoyed that a lot more than the giantbomb one, not trying to be a negative dick here but just not finding it very good, stopped watching it.

There is no limit to how terrible the Giant Bomb people are at video games.

The font and UI are hideous...

Lacks a professional, finished look. SE should have enough resources to make a good font, so I don't see why they stuck with this one. Hence why I was surprised when I saw that this was actually in the final product...

Well norm worked for PC gamer for a long time so that's not really true, but yeah I'm not sure why Ryan and Patrick seem to have to hard time reading messages and remembering where to go and whatnot. Maybe it's because they're getting old (lol).

They generally write about mainstream video games for a mainstream audience (as much as the word "mainstream" makes sense speaking about our hobby). Their skills should match those of the average reader for the reviews to suitably guide her in her buying decisions.

There is absolutely nothing mainstream about Giantbomb's audience.

Given that they went through the whole, "Brono" conversation, I think it's safe to say that just watched the sequence played fairly recently on the ER. It's not surprising that they'd get through it quickly, when you consider that they had just seen what to do.

I'm not talking about the people it actually comprises (do you know their traffic and its sources?), but Jeff was always pretty adamant about reviews being written for as broad an audience as the site can hope to reach.

What exactly are you qualifying as mainstream here? Pretty much everything Giantbomb does (including reviews) is targeted at people who play video games regularly and are very familiar with the hobby. It's a niche site based around people willing to pay $50 a year for a subscription, they aren't exactly pandering to the masses.

So you're saying they're trying to appeal to the lowest common denominator by being shitty at videogames on purpose? That's the best explanation for their ineptitude I've heard yet. Would also explain the SotC QL!

c'mon, don't be ridiculous

To be fair, they were pretty damn slow as well. In the land of the blind...

That's why I put a qualification in parentheses. The "mainstream" (maybe "mainstream hobbyists") would be people who play games (other than social games and apps) semi-regularly, don't follow every game's marketing as closely and read a couple of reviews (or look at a bunch of scores) before buying a game.

I also never said they were pandering. Trying to keep the core content widely accessible isn't pandering. Quick Looks of Japanese bullet hell shooters is pretty niche. A review of Modern Warfare 3 targets more people. They have both and that's great. Looking at the style their reviews are often written in (there are exceptions), they seem much more inclusive than those of big sites you'd more readily consider mainstream (IGN, for example), despite being so personality driven and having no editorial voice.

Not exactly. It was a mixture of snark and gut feeling.

It's explained in the link why the Nu's are where they are. If you want a specific reason, you'd have to ask the Nu.
Ok. I'm interested in this because this particular Nu is on the screen just for a few seconds and never comes back. But maybe it's purpose was to start a build up of the Nu subject in the entire game.

The sad thing is that Ryan isn't 'alone'...

Otherwise why would most modern games have huge arrows pointing to the next objective or a big 'follow' sign on a npc?

I forgive him for not noticing the 'elec lowers def' message. Having those messages on the same line as other stuff isn't the easiest to notice.

And this also shows how well this game is balanced. For pretty much any other jrpg, I'd be really surprised if these guys could progress at all ;)

The Magus fight is going to be interesting. I wonder how long it takes for them to realize that he
changes his weakness
.

Nu are there to cause mind-fucks.

Watching them derp through this game makes me realize just how easy Chrono Trigger truly is.
It's still fun to watch though, although I wish they uploaded more than just 25 minutes or so a day.

Yeah I liked it better at ~45 minutes, the shorter episodes barely get a single thing done in any given episode, I expect MAgus' castle to consist of longer ones though since there's just so much freaking combat in there.

stopped about 3/4 of the way through episode 14 because i was getting frustrated.

i think i need to stop watching this.

at least 1 death.

And there are other decent fights up ahead. I remember using aura whirl abundantly during my playthroughs, I do wonder how far can ya progress single healing away. It will be a fair bit more difficult I bet.

All side quests done!

Well, apart from
Magus... Oops

I don't know how anyone could have worked out some of them without a FAQ.

It was pretty easy to work out where to start, but some of the later steps in Bucca's quest I would never have seen.

Actually, one of the things I really love about Chrono Trigger is that the sidequests felt really organic and I naturally stumbled into them without using a guide.

I just finished the game. Three years after I started it. I can't believe it took me so long to get back to it.

31:32 on the clock, but I was glad that I took the time to go and do some of the side-quests before I finished. They really helped me to reacquaint myself with some of the best aspects of the game.

And I didn't realise until the ending that
Kino was a dude
.

I pretty much played up until the penultimate chapter in 2008/2009, so I had forgotten most of the incidental story stuff.

And I guess I have been as lazy as Ryan and Patrick when it comes to reading the text during the Endurance Run.
