Giantbomb's Endurance Run: The Third: Chrono Trigger

I liked the first episode. the only thing that would slightly concern me is if Patrick starts ramping up the explanations of things in the game, since he remembers them. whether it be story beats or just techniques.

What I like about the previous endurance runs (and especially the Dave-Vinny PC QLs) are when the guys are clueless and need to figure shit out on the fly.

The jazz album Patrick was talking about is Chrono Trigger Brink of Time, and you all need to listen to it right now.
Mitsuda seems really big on jazz. He worked with another one of my favourite composers, Miki Higashino, on an original jazz album too (Tsukiyo ni Saraba -- which is a videogame OST). It's quite good.

Brink of Time is a good album, btw. My boyfriend doesn't like it much since he doesn't care for jazz, but I like listening to it from time to time. I have a soft spot for the Ocean Palace arrangement on that album.

And he tried to sell it!
:lol
I laughed sooooo hard at that.
Turning Brono into a real criminal here
, lol.

The only negative I see about this is that they're not going in blind. I hope Patrick doesn't remember much about the game, but... we'll see.

I'm still a bit skeptical about none of the dialogue being voiced, but the game seems more interesting that I thought it was going to be. I thought it was just going to be a typical Square SNES rpg.

Patrick aint doin it for me in this one. Too sharp with his comments.. needs less treble on that mic and to smoke a .2 before recording.

"Maybe if you read the text..." -Kleppek

"Have you ever seen Ryan play a video game?" -Me

You mean awesome?

Because that's what Square SNES rpgs were.

Awesome.

Do you think it's going to be Bayla or Byla?

Also, LOL:

Nope. Chrono Trigger is a labour of love and creativity among three principal creative staff (Hironobu Sakaguchi, Yuji Horii, Akira Toriyama) and a bunch of other staff members (Yasuyuki Honne, Hiroyuki Ito, Yasunori Mitsuda, Nobuo Uematsu, Masato Kato, Yoshinori Kitase, Yusuke Naora, Yasuhika Kamata, etc) coming together to make something great. Theoretically, if you wanted to see what a Square/Enix collab in those days might have looked like, some people might consider Chrono Trigger to be that game (though Enix was a publisher, not a dev studio).

Most of Square and Enix's RPGs were pretty awesome compared to a lot of stuff back then, though.

Remember Paladin's Quest? Lagoon? Tecmo Secret of the Stars? They paled a lot in comparison to Square and Enix's output in those days.

Chrono Trigger is a hard game to screw up.

Plus, with their actions the court room scene will be hilarious.

I have to admit I'm glad they figured out that you can save on the world map though.

Not saying its screwed up but like you said stuff they did will impact the court room scene. (Which is really not that important i guess?)

Plus there are stuff i wish they did. Chronos mom has text when you take Marle there after running into her in the fair. Stuff like that but whatever. Ill still watch all of it. (i didnt watch the other endurance runs)

Man, I think I won't be following this one. The first episode didn't do much for me. The lack of voice acting/cinematics doesn't really benefit the endurance run experience.
Yeah, it was okay. Going to keep watching a few episodes to see how it goes, but the past magic ain't there. Needs more Vinny and Jeff.

Hmm that was an okay start but I am still not sure the game is well suited for an ER. I like the combo so let's wait and see.

Can someone explain to me what will happen to them in the trail, and what the optimal path is? Never played the game and don't really intend to, so I didn't realise that the yes or no answers really had an impact.

Hmm... I think the fact that I have played a lot of CT means that I won't really enjoy this as much as I might have going in cold.

This does make me want to go back and finish the DS version, though.

Should I start with a preemptive "GRAHR! YER DOIN' IT WRONG! GRAWR!"?

Hahaha. Anyway, it'll be funny to see Ryan's answers/reaction during a later segment, considering his actions at the fair.

I was skeptical about this choice of game for an endurance run, but I enjoyed that first episode. There's going to be a bigger burden on Ryan/Patrick to keep things interesting due to the lack of voice acting, but I think it'll work out ok.

This game needs more of Vinny trying to voice act and reading the lines, lol.

I think you'd have fun with Chrono Trigger. It's just pure fun. :D

Well, during the trial... doing a few things during the fair can make you look good or they can make you look bad to the jury.

If you want to look good for the jury...
1. Do not eat the old man's lunch
2. Talk to the little girl and bring her cat to her
3. Talk to Marle BEFORE picking up her pendant
4. Wait for Marle to pick out her candy
5. Do not offer the pendant to Melchior.
6. During the trial: Tell the truth. If you stole something, admit it. Admit that you started it as well (ie: that it was your fault for running into her).
7. Say that you were not tempted by Marle's fortune.

If four members of the jury vote innocent: you get 1 Ether
If 5 jurors vote innocent: you get 3 Ethers
If 6: 5 Ethers
If all 7: 7 Ethers.

If you just want to be a meanie...
1. Eat the old man's lunch
2. Talk to the girl and don't bother bringing her cat back
3. Pick up the pendant BEFORE you talk to Marle, and then try to sell it to Melchior before you even get Marle in your party, lol.
4. Try to sell the pendant to Melchior with Marle in your party
5. Don't wait for Marle to finish picking out her candy. In fact, try to just move away and I think she uses a "kidnapper" line.
6. During the trial: claim that Marle's fortune tempted you.
7. Claim that Marle started it.
8. Claim you never stole anything when you did.

You obviously get nothing because you didn't get majority support from the jury.

In the end...
You're sent to prison and put to death anyway. You can choose to wait it out for three days for Lucca to rescue you, or just break out of prison yourself by rattling the cage multiple times.

I’m going to give it a week or so to get going, but I found this to be about on par with the Brad/Ryan Deadly Premonition ER (not good).

Hmm. First episode was a bit... boring, I guess. I love Ryan and Patrick (and Chrono Trigger, natch) but it just doesn't seem like a good choice to endurance run. It's a solidly put together game, it's not super outlandish, it's just kind of... a really great game. It's hard to riff on.

They should have picked something that's more rough around the edges or more obscure. I did not like the idea of CT being picked because: a) it's hard to joke around with, b) it's short, and c) both players were exposed to it at some point in their lives.

We'll see as the game progresses, but I'm kind of indifferent towards the ER so far outside of the funny decisions they made.

First episode was OK, but I'm not going to carve out the time to watch this whole ER.

I would have preferred to see Brad playing Persona 4 with Dave commenting.
