Giantbomb's Endurance Run: The Third: Chrono Trigger

Yea, it happened after Chono used one of his Lightning spells.

No, it happened in the beginning.

Someone in the giant bomb comments suggested that the video had the green screen filter accidentally applied to it, and that's why so it was turning Brog's face clear. Made sense to me.

It is. The original Japanese was 天 (sky/heaven). Edit: And Luminaire, Crono's final spell, is also classified as a Light spell in Chrono Cross.

I'm sorry, but no (or we'll just have to agree to disagree). It's true that Crono can use thunder and light spells as part of his original magical attribute (属性は天。雷系の魔法と聖なる魔法を使う). However, the spell lightning in of itself is in no way the elemental opposite of shadow/darkness. If you really want to be technical, the direct opposite of 天 should be 地 (earth/land), not 冥 (shadow).

I'll just agree to disagree then, because there are only four main elements in Chrono Trigger. It's just the way the game works. Now if we were talking about Chrono Cross, that'd be an entirely different beast altogether.

Do note that in the Chrono Trigger DS port, that Crono's Lightning element was translated correctly to Light. The use of Sky/Heaven likely carried the "heavenly"/"holy" connotation.

There are four main elements in the game: Light, Shadow, Water, Fire. These are the resistances and weaknesses of the elemental forces in the game.

Code:
 --------.---------.---------.---------.---------.
 Element | Light | Shadow | Water | Fire |
 --------|---------|---------|---------|---------|
 Light | W | S | S | N |
 --------|---------|---------|---------|---------| S = Strong.
 Shadow | S | W | N | N | W = Weak.
 --------|---------|---------|---------|---------| N = Normal.
 Water | N | N | W | S |
 --------|---------|---------|---------|---------|
 Fire | N | N | S | W |
 --------'---------'---------'---------'---------'

No matter wihch spell you use, even if it's Lightning or Luminaire, it will carry the Light attribute. That's how the elemental system in this game works. It is not Chrono Cross or Final Fantasy.

O ok, I was watching at lower quality at work so I didn't notice the issue until then.

Except that since you're dealing with what Patrick was reading into things, and not what actually happened (Since the mechanics in question were flat out wrong in the first place) lightning is in no way the opposite of 'shadow'. You're going in depth about something that has nothing to do with the issue at hand.

I don't think I know anyone who does.

It isn't that bad of a place as long as you have had plenty of soup, if you know what I'm saying.

Also, I'm trying to remember the song that sounds kinda like one of the tracks from this game (well, it is probably the other way around since the song is from the 80's I think), but I can't find the area the song is from again :(

Okay. However, Patrick, even though he was being too overanalytical, was quite correct in his assumption. No matter which magic offensive skills Crono uses, it will carry the Light element, no matter its name. (ex: Via Spekkio's Japanese dialogue: 魔法は天・冥・火・水の4つの力でなりたってる. スペッキオ「ツンツン頭のおまえは『天』。 I find it hard to bestow a normal damage attribute to that particular attack, but meh. I don't really care anymore. No point in drawing this out any longer. Besides, this thread is supposed to be fun! FUN, I SAY!)

Regardless, I think I'll bail out until
Zeal
. Episode was lacklustre.

I can't be the only one irked by how they're neglecting Bucca, and Barle, right? It hurts to watch people play an RPG, and just leave characters on the sidelines.

That's like, normal. I'm always neglecting useless characters in RPGs. And that be Lucca. With Bobo's heal beam they barely have need of Barle.

I started chrono trigger for first time recently and are only an hour or so ahead but don't think I'd ever take out robo unless a dungeon is shadow resistant or something silly. So I'm not going to swap in someone like lucca unless forced to.

Team science (Brono, Bucca, Bobo) is the way to go. Barle is the worst character in the game other than maybe Brog, there's no reason to use her.

Barle for heal-all spells. What is bucca good for?

Bobo is a better healer than Barle, especially if you give him magic tabs. Bucca has attack magic (flare!) and nice dual techs. Barle is pretty useless outside of haste.

Barle and Brog suffer from having pretty shitty ultimate techs. Life 2 is pointless and Frog Squash isn't very useful outside of the few boss fights that reduce your hp to 1. They end up as the worst damage dealers and the game, and Bobo can heal better than them.

Wrong! Haste!

Lucca does an insane amount of fire damage. I always went with Crono/Frog/Lucca -- though tbh, the first two are enough to win any late game fight.

I've been conditioned in RPGs to stick with a team as much as possible if I want to get deep in their skillset without needless grinding.

Watching the Magus fight now, and wow. I never thought anyone can really be that confused as to how that fight works and never using the Masamune (at least so far) despite it being stated explicitly in the story how integral it is to defeating Magus.

And Byla, Bobo, and Brono is the best team y'all. Brute strength baby.

Yesssss. They finally used Volt Bite. (And it was awesome.) Hate when they just sit on new techs for awhile before using them.

Trying out new abilities is one of the best parts of any RPG.

I hope they have recorded enough episodes to last throughout the holidays.
Watching the live show they did last night, they said something about spending five hours playing CT yesterday, which must be next weeks 5 episodes.

I love how they discovered Volt Bite by picking it accidentally. Was waiting for them to try it the whole episode.

Or when they use an ability once on the wrong enemy with, say, strong physical defence and assume the attack sucks all the time and never use it again.

"defense power up when attacked...I don't really know what that meeeaaaannsss...."

....WHAT?!

Jesus fucking Christ...

My favorite team was always Crono, Marle, Magus. Mostly because Magus is just a fucking badass.

I preferred simply using the the three friends for story purposes. I like seeing what they would say to each other. Powers be damned.

But if you have Magus in there, it's like the Fantastic Four running around with Dr. Doom on their team.

Aw man, they hovered over Volt Bite so many times and kept choosing that drill attack. Their reaction when they finally picked it (on accident) was pretty good.

Dinosaurs are weak to lightning, cat attack is awesome...hmm...

Too bad they didn't use it on the muscly dino in the previous room. They could've easily gotten 1400+ if they kept volt biting.

Magus
fits in better with the CT crew more then people let on. He just detached from civilization when he became the
fiendlord.
He also was a spoiled brat as a kid so you could say his people skills didn't have time to develop before zipping away.

I over-analyze CT but take a look at this pic to see where the boss fits.

He in there. He parallels quite closely with Brono IMO.
