Giantbomb's Endurance Run: The Third: Chrono Trigger

I'm a third of the way into the video and they've still done nothing at all.
That's the way that area plays out if you consider that "doing nothing." I personally love playing this section more then most others.

However, they made two cardinal sins.
a) Missing the main pair of
secrets of Zeal
. I doubt they will go back and figure them out.
b) Money. Those making money comments ITT might be interested here.
This is the ONLY time in the entire play-through of CT where you shouldn't spend a dime unless it is absolutely necessary (though you should be saving for this). Anyone who thought they were rich in this ER were wrong. They are actually quite poor in terms of what you should have stocked at this point.

I had about double then what they have in the ER on my latest play-through. And despite this, I still didn't have enough dough to clean up on the merchant in the surviving village (came close, had to drop Magus's scythe but whatever) . I believe he was about 100,000 gold worth of very good stuff. Stuff that you won't be able to get until Ocean's Palace. And one of the toughest boss battles in the game is forthcoming at this point.

EDIT:
My run is over.

Times below

Total Time 14 hours 54 minutes (save file after end game)

This was what many CT fans and I would call a "complete" run. I won't go into more detail right now to avoid spoilers on the ER. The below is sort of interesting as I will be speed running that with DS vs. vanilla.

Lavos Times in Minutes

Team
Crono/Marle/Ayla

1st
Shell Mimic Form - 10

2nd
Shell Normal - 1.5

3rd
Alien - 6

4th
Internal - 10

Just like I thought
They got crushed so hard today their are sooooooo underpowered from now on.
They really need to grind for like an hour to get though the game more easily.

I also did my run when they started ER in 60 hours since they started, did 100% everything.
Loved it all over again.

They're going to have a hell of a time with the two golems later on. I doubt they'll figure out the copycat trick. (Do not use physical attacks on them)

Were they supposed to beat that guy?
its better if you do, its not really necessary but its better.

Also not learning charm as soon as possible and using it on every enemy as much as possible is a big mistake they are missing out on so so so much in this game.

but hey I can go play my 100% run any time, I'm enjoying their run still but its like I wish I could show you how much more this game has to offer than they are experiencing.
Also by not switching up their party members enough is going to bite really later on when you have more elemental enemies who can resist but only 1 element. And if that element is underpowered they are going to have a very very very hard time.

I can't wait until they get up to the Golem Twins and Gaia. Playing the DS version myself so it's the first time I touched this game in years and those bosses were nuts. Only reason I beat Gaia was because I had 3 Ruby Vests, only reason I beat the Golem Twins was because I had a White(Light?) Mail and had Crono spam Lightning 2 and solo'd the fight(had the auto-counter thing equipped too) with full health lol.

I was using Crono, Ayla and Robo though so not having two heal all characters made those battles harder.

I was curious, someone mentioned using your magic tabs/caps on Robo since he apparently has the best heal in the game, is that true?

Yes if you play the game from the beginning you should give him EVERY magic and speed tab until 85% of the game is done
Because his magic later on and heal and also his speed is than soooo good that he becomes the most useful character in the game.

Did they really lose because they are severely under-leveled though? If I remember the Golem fight correctly his physical attacks are the worst, so if they had simply attacked him with some elemental magic early on it would have been much more manageable.

If they did not skip any random battles and did like 30 to 40 min grind at this point chrono could do a 500+ normal attack.
And if you know the strategy for the Golem you can defeat him without him hitting you (except for the first time the ball drops on you) but after that no hits anymore.
They are very underpowered at this point in the game.

The way every tiny story thread and detail intersects and forms together in Zeal is a fucking masterstroke of video game storytelling.
Couldn't agree more with this gentleman.

I also like that the story hasn't got the "in your face" type of storytelling elements like we have in games nowadays. It's subtle, charming and interesting.
I like how Ryan went from "don't give a shit about anything" to "talk to every NPC on your way". You can tell he's interested in the plot.

You can power through lack of elementals. Typically you are good enough if you have two sets with Cr/Mar or Cr/Luc. You only need team 1000AD for
Ocean's Palace
. There is no need beyond that.

I took both of them out at level 28-30 or so. You don't need any tricks except the
physical switch on the twins. The game tells you how to beat Gaia by gifting you magic barriers throughout the climb. Those plus Falcon with Cr/Ay is GG. Golem Twins are tougher and comes down to how fast you can keep your team up. They were doing more then 50% damage on my characters but I managed to keep alive long enough to take them out.

lol No. By the time those tabs equate to anything he is long overshadowed by better characters. That's a really poor use of resources. And Robo is a terrible character on a normal play-through. I experimented more with him with my last run and verified his awfulness.
They are very underpowered at this point in the game.
No, they are at a standard pace of a non-grinding play-through. I just did one and posted at the top of this page. I was at their exact level at that point.

Total Time 14 hours 54 minutes (save file after end game). Did all vanilla side-quests and everything.

They might be underpowered for beginners but they are by no means at a non-manageable state.

Team Ends Worlds (Vanilla)

Crono (lvl 55)
Rainbow, Haste Helm, Nova Armor, Wrath Band

Ayla (lvl 53)
Fist, Haste Helm, Zodiac Cape, Prism Spectacles

Magus (lvl 52)
Hadean Sickle, Prismatic Helm, Nova Armor, Speed Ring

Composition
  • I unfortunately had to grind a bit beyond the vanilla end game to get Magus enough TP for Dark Matter. So I increased a few levels. :(
  • Speed Ring (+3) would normally be Gold Stud when not fighting
    Lavos
    .
  • Prism specs basically double Ayla's attacks and is worth it for the Falcon/Volt damage boosts.
  • Dual haste helms for auto + speed ring for double stars on Magus.
  • Nova Armors give status immunity.
  • Unfortunately this setup currently does not allow Ayla status immunity (though
    Lavos
    strips it regardless).
  • Wrath Band 80% counter is godlike and unstoppable.
  • Dark Matter spam with Magus constantly.
  • Cr/Ay use Falcon for multi hit, Volt Bite for single 3K damage.
  • Only used a hyper-ether or whatever it is called on Magus and a panacea for confuse.
  • Did you know the world record holder for CT time used Crono, Ayla, and Marle? Marle haters be damned. ;)
  • Now it is time to find that Tiara and do a triple haste run. Triple auto-haste...so unbelievably broken.

I respect your opinion but I have to say that Robo is the best char in the game if you treat him well with a lot of tabs he will become awesome.

Robo on my latest playtrough did 6000 per hit with uzzi punch.

I want someone to spoil the story for me. I've played the game a bunch of times, but I could never answer this:

Who is this mystical being who with its dying breath sees its life pass before its eyes once more, revisiting the different eras by means of Crono and his band of time travelers? I had my own theories, ... but does the game actually tell you?

Did I forget to talk to somebody? Is it revealed in one of the endings I never got?

So you load up Robo and then gimp the rest of your team just to make him usable? There are three characters in use in CT and synergy is what makes builds great. An even spread of buffs will go way longer then trying to make a single character "usable".

Also, just saying "Robo is the best" is not a very good argument. He is horribly slow, has terrible magic defense (which is the most important defensive attribute for the last 25% of CT), and his attack power is outclassed by Cr/Ayla. I don't know why anyone thinks he is good for anything except his HP and getting the crap kicked out of him.

Most characters can do that damage especially Ayla and Crono. You also appeared to have grinded above the norm in CT. Grinding extremely high in CT completely throws off all meta-game and you might as well throw out the playbook.

No no no I did not threat my team like that, Chrono did about 4500 with luminair and Lucca did about 5500 with flare, I think that if you give Robo an edge with some tabs he balances out more in the course of the game.
And I think Robo is the best char that does not mean that he is but I think he is.
And on the slow part and magic defense part, that is why you give him speed and magic tabs throughout the game so that he balances out.

But hey its a great game and people like to play it the way they want to play it.
And is one of the many reasons why this is an amazing game :).

Yeah, I always found Robo (or J5 in my game) to be a waste of time.
The only proper rename is R-66Y. The best rename troll.

The difficulty with talking damage numbers is that it is level dependent. When you are looking at 4500-5500, that is serious grinding. I attempt zero grinding in CT because it can make the game a joke. I was very upset that I had to grind a bit to get Magus his TP for Dark Matter. It probably added a few hundred DPS per minute that I didn't want. In hindsight, I should have grinded not using members from Ends Worlds. :(

It is an amazing game and everyone should play it how they choose. I just have played this game so many times that I objectively break down the character tiers. So when I hear a recommendation of Robo being the best and new players should be boosting him with tabs? Well, I will just post my disagreements because I see that as a hindrance. But I will also say that you should use the characters you like so it is a conflicting ideal.

If the recommendation is just to use the team you like, I have no issues. If somebody asks how to make broken builds, that is fun to divulge. But it's all this random Marle sucks, Robo rules, etc... stuff that is off-putting. I'm also guilty of character bias but I will always say to use the team you like. It's that type of game.

One thing I'm very proud of them for not missing was the trigger for Lucca's end game side quest in this chapter. I never talked to the plant burner in my first play-through.

Part 23

Man, 2poch. So good.
Ryan and Patrick's inability to remember anything, including the areas they just visited can truly drive me nuts, but I'm glad they finally found the way and they managed to get passed that poorly designed section in the sewers where you can't see that there is actually a damn path.

I didn't mind their backtracking too much, I couldn't be bothered going to the door in the dome where you chase the rat when I played through it so I was interested to see what they found.

Surprised to see they couldn't remember who the wizard in the dark ages who summoned Lavos was, or that it had happened at all for Patrick. Magus always made a pretty big impression on me. I wonder how much time passes between each of their play sessions.

when do you think these guys will be done? i think i might watch it in order then. unless you guys can link me to another run that gets most of the good weapons and has good commentary.

They have quite a ways to go. If they do all the sub-quests then that pads hours on.

I just thought of this. We all know how the bombsquad is tired of doing Endurance Runs, or at least getting implored to. So what if for the next ER, they got Rorie and Karen to do it, with Karen holding the controller? I've got the perfect game for them: Super Mario RPG. Quirky and cute dialogues, no random encounters, beginner-level RPG, not too long. Yeah, that would be great.

Does no one have the answer to my spoiler question or is it so obvious that nobody would demean themselves to state it?

I don't think it's ever spelled out anywhere. Some people think it's
the earth itself
or maybe
the Chrono universe equivalent of God
, but it's never stated anywhere really.

Let's Play Chrono Trigger by HCBailly

+ Great voice
+ 100% game
+ Great stories in slow times
+ Great explanation
+ Run is finished

(from video 2/3 he uses a different emulator for better quality)
He must play that game a ton from what I am seeing. He also did the Robo route. It's fine but looking at most of his play-through shows the lack of speed. It's just such a centralized play-style with sporadic benefits. However, his power strategies seem to overcome the deficit.

Can you tell what his total play-time was post final battle? I was having a tough time figuring it out at work. That would be something interesting to know.

mmmm not sure I know its long I going to say 45 hours or so.
69 video's all around the 12 to 15 min mark.
And he cuts out a LOT so their is even more to the play time but most random battles are cut out.

And a great thing about his run is that no story spoilers before he comes to it himself.
Even though he played the game over 20 times him self does plays it like you would for the first time.
But knowing where to go.
