GigaBowser hits reddit?

If you know how to filter subreddits, then no. A lot of people criticize Reddit because they don't know how to use the platform, they only look at the biggest and most popular subreddits, which naturally have the highest concentration of retarded people, especially the ones focused on politics and news, and then they judge the whole platform based on that.

If you like consuming a wide variety of content, Reddit is the best place right now. For discussions though, I personally prefer forums like GAF.
Yes, but if you're interested in gaming—which I assume most NeoGAF users are—Reddit is abysmal. While I did enjoy some of the subreddits I participated in, almost every gaming subreddit eventually got hijacked. I saw the Smash Bros. subreddit arguing over constitutional monarchies, the Animal Crossing subreddit spamming Palestine flags, and the Red Dead Redemption subreddit debating why Arthur would have agreed with Charlie Kirk's assassination. I avoided the front page like the plague, so seeing this bleeding into everything else was frustrating.

Reddit works fine for knitting tips or DIY projects, but gaming has become too mainstream to get anything of value there. Every day, the top posts in most gaming subreddits are fanart, cosplay, or stolen memes. Real discussion is rare—just shallow noise from impatient people expecting the top post to change every hour.

Also, many brand related places eventually just start feeling like ads. r/nintendoswitch2 was a bit wild before the release and now it's incredibly sanitized. Makes me wonder whether it got bought up or paid by marketing. The soul of it completely disappeared. r/kobo (an ereader brand) has like half the posts being "here's my new Kobo, I'm so happy!" and in r/ipadpro it's the same, "look at my setup!" No meaningful discussion at all. Macrumors, a traditional forum, is helluva lot better for that.

I'm just wondering how all this got mixed into video games & everything else .

Do people be in the middle of sex & say " ma'am put your clothes back on your tits are left leaning" 😭 it's like no one is just enjoying life anymore everything is about politics.
Why do you use a cry emoji in all your posts

Yes, you make a good point.

One of the drawbacks of Reddit's sheer size is that many subreddits end up dominated by people who blur the line between casual enjoyment and outright consoomerism. Go into almost any gaming subreddit and start a genuine discussion about why you didn't enjoy a particular entry in a franchise, and you'll be downvoted into oblivion, labelled a 'hater' or a 'grifter', then buried beneath the same meme templates recycled since 2016.

As you say, this leaves many large subreddits feeling functionally empty, with only very specific, moderator-approved posts allowed to survive. The various Switch subreddits are a good example: beyond the occasional sales figures, they offer remarkably little in the way of meaningful discussion. It's little more than a glorified advertisement.

To be honest, what you're describing happens here as well. Someone opens a thread claiming that X game is the best ever, gets met with criticism, and immediately it turns into "I'm famous, I know what I'm talking about" or "you're all just trolls."

Takeany Nintendo thread, for example. Have you seen the size of that defense force? You literally cannot speak your mind without being instantly labeled a troll or a hater. Say the Switch 2 is overpriced and suddenly it's "you're just poor." Disagree a bit more strongly and you'll be told to go fuck yourself by a bunch of rabid man-children.
Sony isn't any different. Dare to suggest that the Pro is overpriced or that it hasn't really delivered so far and you're guaranteed to be told that you're a whiner and to fuck off and leave the thread.
Same story with Xbox by the way.

At the end of the day, it's almost impossible to have a proper, civilized conversation online because of zealots and man-children. That's just the nature of the beast unfortunately. And to paraphrase good old Mike Tyson: "everyone's acting brave because they've never been punched in the face."

It is what it is

There's important distinctions between what happens here and what happens on Reddit that your post completely misses.

On Reddit, the default is popularity-based sorting, so once a take starts getting downvoted, it's effectively buried. That creates a feedback loop where the loudest or most agreeable voices rise to the top, and dissenting opinions get framed as trolling almost immediately because fewer people even see them in context. It rewards dogpiling and performative consensus.

Here, posts in threads are chronological. There's no burying effect. Even if someone disagrees strongly, your post stays visible and readable on its own terms rather than being algorithmically pushed into oblivion. That changes the incentives. People have to actually respond to what you said, not just downvote and move on.

That doesn't mean zealots don't exist here, but the structure makes real back-and-forth more possible. You can disagree about Nintendo, Sony, or Xbox without your post being functionally erased.

I don't disagree 😉

The down voting that you mention though, it's still all due to said fanboys and man children (mods or not).

Personally, I don't ever visit the popular topics 'cause the few times I did, I lost a couple hundred of braincells.
I only visit and read the subReddits to which I'm suscribed to (r/motorcycles/Ducati/Playstation/Xbox/Samsung/OnePlus/OLED TVs) and my experience has been 99% fine brother- never visit /read political/society/news ones so...

Cheers

I'm not defining myself by anything. The political slant on Reddit depends on the specific subreddit, but most lean to what most would consider liberal.

As I said elsewhere in the thread, I don't get my politics from Reddit, I simply answered the question.
Question is why does this matter? Why are we pigeonholing websites by "its" political views? Makes no sense.

For what it's worth I've found Discord to be pretty decent for what I usually look for when I go on Reddit. Then again I'm usually looking for a quick answers related to the game I'm playing and not some sort of deep discussion.

I agree to an extent. The reactions system works in a similar albeit less egregious fashion to down/up voting. If you're quick scrolling through a thread with many posts a post with many reactions vs. one with no reaction is a lot more likely to give you pause and read it, and thus makes you more likely to react as well; boosting that feedback cycle.

Good thing here is that the posts don't become hidden here so yes its a bit different.

Yes, you're right. However, the key difference is that Reddit's downvote system actively punishes users for deviating from the hivemind. Say something unpopular and your post is quickly buried by memes, effectively shutting down the discussion before it even begins. Say what you will about traditional forums, but it isn't unusual for threads created years ago to resurface. Meaningful discussion can persist over time, even if it occasionally takes on a more confrontational tone.

Its been almost 9 years since they split. Frankly it amazes me that 9 years later still so many GAF people talk about that place as a shrine of importance, atleast important enough to mention them.

More like 8 years and 2.5 months.

While censorship on NeoGAF in 2013-2017 didn't get as insane as it got on the purple forum fairly quickly (2019 iirc), it's an extremely good thing thought police is gone.
And this fact should be celebrated for many years to come.

Reddit is built around top down control of the narrative, it's not "just the big sites" (in any case we all know now a very few number of mods control huge chunks of the entire website) it's how it is designed. There is no subreddit where crimethink is allowed, all those were purged long ago.

You may be able to get meaningful discussion here and there but I got banned for not being sufficiently positive about my stupid sportsball team recently, so yes overall they are about enforcing the narrative, on every single subreddit on that website.

Because the vocal morons of the 21st century weren't taught one simple thing in their family homes.
That having a different opinion is just that - having a different opinion. And not being selfish, being evil or being dangerous.

Internet in general made world a lot worse in regards to one thing - giving dumb people and disturbed individuals a platform.

Just came across this awesome post and wanted to share it because I miss GigaBowser and it's someone who's brain works similar.

Helo eweryone. Actualy wana share some insperation about mening of name Legacy of Kain frsnchise for me. In short, i think Raziel was the true Legacy of Kain. Yes i know about Bo 1 making other studeo and whole story with title, but i do this post with todey perspektive. Why i think he seas Raziel is his Legacy, not Nosgoth or his empire, or New vampire race. First of all Kain was betraid from the begining by those Who represents the balance of Nosgoth. Thats pushed him to the side of vampires. Yes i think he hated humanity not as a vampire, but as a human. So he bild his empire as a defiance against those Who betraid him. But his empire was his ambition, with help wich he can run avey from himself. But as it was with the pillars, same was with the empire, Kain get into showes bigger than his size. So he used cronoplast to weald his desteny. Only than he begin to lern about his mistakes, and exepting his role as a father of nations. So the qestion, why he dosent se his Legacy in New vampire race. As Kain put it, he was a prisoner of fate. But there wose one who is not, yes it is Raziel, atlest in his mind. So what Kain sees in Raziel as his Legacy? Free Will. But as we now of Kain, he was twisted by madness of Nupraptor and betrayed so many tims, so he seas it as a natural lesson of growing. And yes in his mind he sees a goal to rase a champion of fate by those methos he knew. He throw Raziel to the abyss, he orcastrated some events. He secrifice his Lieutenants to him, as his empire, and all of Nosgoth once again. Becouse as he put it"as long as one of us stand, we are legion, thats why i must secrifice my children to the woid, i can do so with a clear heart". In concept of new timline, with New Nosgoth it has meaning. So yes basicly in games Kain says to Raziel, "you hold all of the cards" Thats why i think Kain thinks about Raziel not as a servand, but more as a son, that was foreged by him, even more as his Leg

acy of Free Will.

If that is not him, then, I am a monkey's fucking uncle.

Why is everything about politics

It's like everyone became programmed to just post this stupid stuff any & everywhere they can.

What does any of this have to do with politics?

Word. Era is n't crazy because it's left, it's crazy because it's a self-reinforcing distortion bubble. A cult, of sorts. Don't need any particular politics or any politics at all for that.
