My friend was sitting right next to where you are in a class him and I had together many years ago, and there was a girl sitting exactly where the girl in your lab is sitting.
After staring at her for too long she said, across the classroom, "Can I help you?"
You can avoid something like this by either, stop looking at her, or go and talk to her.
Worst thing that happens is she isn't interested in hanging out with you, and hopefully you use that experience to encourage youself to do it again. Lack of success repeated many times can lead to success.
