I ain't gonna lie, my main motivation for writing this post is to talk about my latest gaming moves in the hopes that someone out there will say "ey, I dig those games too!". but I figure it could actually be pretty valid for us to compile a thread of game recommendations - with some snippets of explanation, maybe? - for people who might be trying to emulate, or genuinely go grab some retro hardware.

So, anyway, I've ultimately got my hands on a bushel of consoles from the 00s (my favourite decade for console gaming, perhaps? That's certainly a function of my age ofc) and, since I've owned many of these games before in one sense/iteration or another, I was able to exclude a bunch of established classics and distil a list that I feel more personally interested in. So I thought I'd share!

Please join me ^_^

*note I've completed Persona 4 Golden a number of times so it's not currently installed

- Jet Set Radio
(originally on Dreamcast, this is a pseudo-open world skateboard... action... trick... grafiti artist... thing... it's amazing and has unbeatable style)

- Grim Fandango Remastered
(This should be a rite of passage to adulthood, it's an artistic, musical, humourous, brain bending triumph.)

- Lumines: Electronic Symphony
(a couple of years ago Tetris Effect lit up the scene... It was as descendent of this game. If you ask me, Lumines has better gameplay anyway... It doesn't have one or two great gameplay features of the original Lumines (puzzle mode, oi vey) but it's got far better music, aesthetics, payoff)

- Ninja Gaiden Sigma Plus
(if you don't know about this game, I'll just say it's a fast paced, challenging game, like a Dark Souls from long before Dark Souls came around.. More or less. This iteration on the VITA handles like a dream and looks pretty fantastic. I'm told you should stick away from the sequel though.)

- Pure Chess
(I'm into chess, and this is a solid simulator with incredible, albeit very static, graphics)

- Rayman: Origins/Legends
(I'll level with you, I almost made a thread about Rayman Origins being my favourite side-scroller OAT, I am in love with the wit, the bombast, the challenge, the changing levels, the characterizations... I haven't even played Legends yet, but I hear it's more of the same with some remastered Origins levels, so I'm looking forward to it)

- Shiren the Wanderer and the... blahblah Dice of Fate
(my avatar... Fantastic game, Roguelike, restart the whole thing when you die, but keep ur equipment... possible to get resurrected via online assists.. companions... it's all awesome... my favorite parts are the humor, art direction, development, and really cool battle system.. it is beautiful.)

- Steamworld Dig 2
(I really liked this game, I bought it off the PlayStation Store a few years ago without having played earlier iterations.. And it was just a good, smooth game. Shades of Terraria and the like only without the tedious building/crafting/survival stuff)

- Wipeout 2048
(A fantastic, gorgeous iteration of the series. Achingly long load time, maybe, but the gameplay is as good as ever and boy is it a stylish offering.)

- Everybody's Golf
(I think other people have loved this as 'Hot Shots Golf' or something, but I'm pretty sure it's the same deal. The Japanese title is 'mina san no golf', which literally translates as Everybody's Golf, so I'm gonna refer to it as such. Just a great arcade golf game with very pleasing graphics)

- Resogun
(You've heard of housemarque, I'm sure... Returnal et al... Well they cut their teeth on the Vita and this game is a great spin on the smup genre)

- Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA
(I hear from fanboy sources that this is the ultimate Ys game, I haven't got around to playing it but it's definitely in the barrel, so is Celceta)
Note: I've two PSPs, the 1k because it's the SEXIEST HANDHELD EVER CREATED and is just great retro fun, and a 2k which, despite being plastic like a MacDonalds' Happy Meal toy, can connect to my TV and has more RAM. I play the heavier games on the 2k.
- Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together
(This is a curated list, right? I figure if I'm gonna enjoy this fantastic but dated game, pick through it, I'd rather do it via Tactics Ogre rather than FFT:War of the Lions. They're both fantastic, this just looks better and is more fun to play, imo. So that's why it's sitting on my limited memory card.)

- Lumines
(you can't have any sony handheld and not move heaven and earth to have access to this game.)

- Persona 3 Portable
(PS3P was the best game on the PSP, PS4G the best game on the Vita, PS5R arguably in the top few games on the PS 4... This series is special, even if you don't like anime much (I certainly don't usually like things like highschool dramas, but I was unashamedly in love with this)

- Loco Roco
(possibly racist 'gollywog' reminiscent enemies aside, just a really fun game with a great style that really pops)

- Patapon 3
(similarly stylish and fun to Loco Roco, this one relys on you beating out beats to motivate your army of helpers. Awesome creative gameplay)

- Ridge Racer
(This was a release game and... Well I don't know what to say, it was incredible, incredible on release and it's badass to this day.)

- Valkyria Chronicles 2/3
(I break my own rule a bit here, VC2 is probably too much for my PSP1K so I'll probably end up moving these games to the 2K... I was able to find an English Patched version of the 3rd game and damn near laid a joyful egg when I did... VC 2 is widely available (including on Vita) and is an incredible handheld feat)
*NOTE: My knowledge of good PSP titles ran a bit dry on my second console, I picked up what I could but by and large this one's just there in case I wanna chuck any of my games on the TV
- Final Fantasy Type 0 (ENG patch)
(Yeah, there's an epic FF game on PSP that was Japan only. Well, someone helped us out there and it's the bee's knees. It's got a wacko battle system and, well, who wouldn't wanna check out an English patched game that was hitherto only available in hieroglyphs?)

- God of War Ghost of Sparta
(I just kinda feel obligated to have it, I really don't like this gameplay lol but it's a great achievement on a handheld and, yeah, the reboot on PS4 is awesome)

- SOCOM Bravo 2
- SOCOM Tactical Strike

(These are apparently really tight ports of the PS2 games which I loved, I've yet to try them)

- Gran Turismo
(starts slow like all GT games, it's just really fun to have it in your pocket.)

- GTA Vice City Stories/Liberty
(GTA 3/Vice City in your pocket, more or less, what's not the love?)

- Grand Knights History (ENG)
(I actually came here from Grand Kingdom, a PS Vita game which was sadly hampered by an online focus and some weird framerate issues in menus, I was stoked to see that this was available on the PSP. I got an English patched version, and it's a must-play for any PSP owner)

sorry nintendo fans, I can't put more time into this, I'll update it later if this thread gets off the ground

Sega Saturn:

-Burning Rangers
-NiGHTS
-Radiant Silvergun
-Panzer Dragoon Saga
-Sega Rally
-VF2 / Fighters Megamix
-Exhumed/Powerslave
-SF Alpha/Zero 2
-Elevator Action 2
-Battle Garegga
-SEGA Ages Outrun
-Saturn Bomberman
-Virtual On

The Saturn was and still is a totally brilliant console. Despite the messy hardware and the commonly held belief that "it couldn't do 3D" it was my system of choice during that generation.

I bought mine purely for Daytona USA and despite the short comings it was a brilliant, brilliant conversion and arguably the best home port until the eventual digital releases in recent years. Just something about the handling was so right.

The thing with the Saturn was there were so many brilliant games, especially if you leant heavily into imports from Japan. I suspect the reason it was relatively so much more successful in Japan than elsewhere was that they embraced the 2D strengths rather than thinking anything not 3D was "old" Helped that Virtua Fighter was a phenomenon there of course.

so many great gaming moments from swooping over the oceans in Panzer Dragoon to gliding through the shady forests taking on the boss and then exploring the cool, dank, water laden caves in the sequel, Sega Rally just being one of the ultimate home conversions of all time, relentlessly causing you to play Time Attack to shave just one more hundredth of a second off your best time - truly you became one with the car in that game and knew every nuance of the track and the gear shifts

10 player Bomberman was also a truly seminal gaming moment. Exhumed inspired level design. The disappointment of Daytona CCE (handling was off), the magnificence of Gun Griffon, hitting enemies so hard in Fighting Vipers that their armor came off or they catapulted out of the ring (PepsiMan!)

Athlete Kings/Decathlete being just brilliant. The RPG's! Shining Wisdom, Shining the Holy Ark, Story of Thor 2 and Mystaria just for starters. Not to mention Panzer Dragoon Saga! Stuff like Shining Force 3 and Dragon Force. Plying through all the parallels of Dark Savior.

Playing hours of Sega Worldwide Soccer 97 (for a while the best football game of its generation) and having to ban the long shot/lob from the halfway line goalie parry to striker inevitable goal from 2 player games. Marvelling at the astonishing commentary in World League Soccer.

Discovering more obscure classics like Bulk Slash, Necronomicon Digital Pinball, Savaki and others. Playing stuff like D-Xhird purely for the stage graphics.

The amazing music of Touring Car (sampling Martin Luthor King's "I've been up the Mountain" speech!). The even more amazing music of Sonic R (T J Davis and Richard Jacques for the win)

Children of the Atom! The Alpha/Zero ports, the SNK ports, Darkstalkers, X-Men vs Streetfighter with practically zero load times, Marvel vs Streetfighter. Cyber boys. The amazing port of Capcom's D&D games. Groove On Fight, Astra Superstars and more

The shooters! Man the shooters - so many classics from the obvious like RSG to the more obscure like The Game Paradise. The retro ports like Outrun, Space Harrier, Powerdrift, Galaxy Force, Salamander Pack, ThunderForce Gold 1 & 2, the MsX Collection, Mickey & Donald. Daisenkusen, Pu Ri Lu Ra and others. Capcom Generations. Sonic Jam with it's magical glimpse at a 3D Sonic and so much bonus material.

Virtua Cop, Virtua Cop 2 and House of the Dead. Amazing conversions (despite the obvious roughness of the last one) and brilliantly playable even now.

The late, late releases (Final Fight Revenge, Magical Knight RayEarth)

the "impossible" double whammy of Duke Nukem and Quake. As students playing Death Tanks Zwei way, way too much (Hey kids it's a blitz round!)

The phenomenal port of Dead or Alive!

The amazing gameplay of Guardian Heroes. The frustration at what should have been an amazing port of Symphony of the Night was so badly handled

and then there was NiGHTS. Such a misunderstood game. I myself didn't get it initially. Then I played Christmas NiGHTS (one of the best giveaways ever) and it clicked. Suddenly it all made sense and you were transported to a digital dreamscape. An amazing ethereal game.

Was the system perfect - of course not - it was deeply flawed and must have been a nightmare to code for. However despite this it delivered so many gems that criminally few people got to play.

Game Over Yeah!

Game Over Yeah!
What a journey, thanks so much for taking the time to share that man, what a legend

i totally get what you're saying about panzer dragoon, i got similar feelings for later titles, dungeon siege has that kind of expressive level design too.. just one example

sega saturn was a tad before my time, because i came to gaming a tad late, but i do remember road rash and a few others... i looked at NiGHTS from reading ur post and it looks pretty awesome, some kinda take on sonic with a whole host of different features.. yeah, hot shit... looked like the kinda game i would have tried in a game store as a midget and totally not understood lol

my wife, in just another example of why she's so cool, revealed to me a while ago that back when she was a cute but badass japanese teenager she had a ps1 she saved up for, and that the only game she had was legend of mana, which took her like 5 years to complete... i only bring it up because it too was a bit of a hybrid thing from a kinda similar time and i've not much more to offer on that period... tried that game myself and couldn't even...

Here is a short list of 40 fantastic games on the MegaDrive. This console just keeps on delivering, and I could have easily extended the list.

It starts with Adventures of Batman & Robin, a run & gun game released late in the life of the console. It displays incredible visuals, is fast paced, requires skills and is a lot of fun.
Alisia Dragoon is a charming platformer where you control a young woman and a dragon that can evolve. Great soundtrack and a solid game.
Battle Mania Daiginjou is a very original shmup where you control two girls in a very imaginative, a bit crazy urban environment. Developers have been very creative here. You should really check this game.
Castlevania on the MegaDrive is a very solid entry, that plays well, uses the larger resolution of the console, moves pretty fast and has great music. Two characters as well.
Comix Zone is a great Western game on the console, where you go through a comic. Characters are big, battle system is solid, soundtrack great, and again, a great use of the hardware on the visual department.
Contra Hard Corps is another fantastic run & gun on the console, with awesome gameplay, branching paths, varied characters and top notch gameplay.
Dragon's Fury is a pinball game and you will spend a lot on time on this. There is only one table, but it is very addictive, with many sub-tables and an amazing soundtrack.
Dune II is one of the first RTS, it was made by Westwood, and it is absolutely brilliant on MegaDrive. Runs like a dream. Great maps and mechanics, awesome soundtrack. Highly recommended.
D&D Warriors of the Eternal Sun is another game from Westwood and it is again a fantastic game, that implement the rules of the original D&D. Visuals are nice, soundtrack is great, and you really get the feel of a traditional RPG with this game.
Elemantal Master is a vertical SHMUP where you control a wizard. It is great fun and has an great sountrack.
Flashback is an adventure game that really anticipated the modern take on the genre. Animation is fantastic, atmosphere as well. The story-telling is good and immersive. Definitely play this.
Gley Lancer is an horizontal SHMUP with a great story, great visuals and soundtrack. It is perfectly playable, no slowdown. One of my favorites.
Golden Axe III is my personal pick from the series. Gameplay is tight, with a lot of moves. Many branching paths. Fantastic soundtrack. Visuals aren't great, but the game is fun nonetheless.
Gunstar Heroes is a legendary run & gun from Treasure. It is filled with incredible technical achievements and is great fun.
Landstalker is another impressive game on the console, with its isometric engine that runs perfectly well. Gameplay is tight and precise, story is great. This game had a lot of text, it was translated in French and it is one of the best adventure game you can find on 16 bits consoles.
La Légende de Thor is an incredible adventure game with huge sprites, a lot of enemy on screen and a great number of moves for the player. Visuals are fantastic, making a great use of the reduce color palette of the console. Great soundtrack.
Light Crusader is another game from Treasure. It is an isometric adventure game where you explore an underground dungeon. The game is filled with puzzles, combat is good, with a lot of bosses. Great soundtrack.
Lord Monarch is S-RPG where you have to conquer maps by managing your kingdom. It is a pretty unknown game that was translated to English only recently. Definitely one of the best on the console. Check it out.
M.U.S.H.A is a legendary vertical SHMUP. Despite being a pretty old game, it is filled with very original ideas that help created an immersive experience. Gameplay is tight, stages are long but the difficulty is well balanced.
Master of Monsters is a S-RPG that feels pretty close to a tabletop game. You have to conquer maps by summoning monsters, and have them evolve. Terrain is important here. Soundtrack is amazing.
Outrun 2019 is the most crazy racing game I have seen on 16 bits consoles. Pacing is super fast and the MegaDrive generates unbelievable roads here, with forks, roads that go above you and you can jump unto, roads in the air, crossroads etc... A bit poor in color, but very impressive otherwise. Awesome soundtrack as well.
Phantasy Star II is a legendary game for me. It's game-design is great. You can pick your characters, you have to carefully plan your visits to the dungeons, plan which weapons you are going to buy etc... It is a lot of great things like this, it is also very open.
Phantasy Star III although poorer in level-design, has a great story with huge branching paths that spawns a ton of characters.
Phantasy Star IV is a masterpiece. Everything is perfect in this game. The story-telling is incredible for the console, combat are great and well balanced. Game is huge, with a ton of things to see.
Ristar is an incredible platformer on the MegaDrive and has a lot of love that was put into it. It is definitely at Sonic 3 & Knuckles levels of quality. Full of great ideas, awesome musics. You should play this.
Rocket Knight Adventures is another amazing Konami game on MegaDrive. This is a fast paced platformer filled with humor. Visuals are awesome and accommodate the palette of the console, sountrack is one of the best on the console. Tight gameplay.
Shining Force II is a legendary game and one of the best T-RPG I have played. It is perfect on many aspects, and makes a great use of the hardware. A ton of characters that will have you wanting to restart the game as soon as you complete it. Amazing soundtrack.
Soleil is an adventure game that is certainly not a Zelda clone. It has a great, touching story and is pretty linear. You have to discover what is happening to the world and the monsters.
Sonic 3 & Knuckles is the best Sonic game ever made. It has a ton of stages, you can play with Sonic, Tails and Knuckles. Branching paths. Awesome soundtrack.
Sonic 3D is a fantastic isometric platformer. It is not a game about speed, but about exploring. The game is really nice, great bonus stages as well. Awesome soundtrack, as usual.
Streets of Rage is a BTA. The first game in the series a charm that was lost afterwards. It is darker, soundtrack is the best, and I like that the sprites were smaller. It actually depicted better backgrounds (larger scale).
Streets of Rage 3 is my second pick from the series and should be played in Japanese. Here the gameplay is a blast, with a ton of moves, rolling, running, special attacks with weapons. And two endings.
Street Racer on MegaDrive is my favorite version. It is not some pseudo-3D, but a nice and very smooth scrolling, with a fully textured road which absolutely stunning. Gameplay is much more tight here and requires drifting.
Sub Terrania is an action game about navigating a ship in a world where gravity is very high. It is purely skill based, and very difficult. Visuals are fantastic and the soundtrack from Jesper Kyd one of my favorites.
Twinkle Tale is a SHMUP where control scrolling and it can in several directions. You play as a wizard and travel a fantastic world filled with creatures. Game is simple and fun.
Vectorman is a super impressive action game released late in the console life. The visuals are incredible and it makes full use of the console. Great gameplay, very fun.
Wonder Boy in Monster World is my favorite entry in the series. It has a big interconnected world, is very fun, timeless visuals.
X-Men 2 Clone Wars is another late Western game with great visuals and soundtrack. I really enjoyed it, and found the characters to be very well made.
Xeno Crisis is a recent MegaDrive game that is awesome. It is a top down run & gun game. Visuals are great, gameplay is super tight. Soundtrack is incredible.

So here it is. I hope this list helps people discover a few games.

I may have exaggerated. It was maybe a group of 5-6 people, but was indeed the bomb! (see what I did there?)

I did, ONCE and it was a damn pain in the ass (Worth it tho). You needed two 6 player adapters and obviously 10 controllers, 10 players and a TV big enough so you could see what was going on with enough space for chairs for said 10 people. Nobody else had a Saturn so you had to source those 10 controllers yourself.

It was the unicorn of gaming to set up.

(You've heard of housemarque, I'm sure... Returnal et al... Well they cut their teeth on the Vita and this game is a great spin on the smup genre)
Housemarque was around long before the Vita. And pretty much any Vita Housemarque games are ports from games that launched earlier on other consoles.

kanjobazooie

Mouse Ball Fetishist
Metal Gear Ghost Babel
A non-Kojima game that stands on its own. Even when compared to Solid 1, it doesn't feel like a downgrade. Best looking GBC game in my opinion.

Gargoyle's Quest
Dark Souls reminds me a lot of this game. A fantastic journey, and I prefer it so much over GnG. Make a new game, Capcom!

Super Mario Land
Fever Dream: The Game

Mega Man Xtreme 1+2
Just listen to this rendition of DEMO.
Advance Wars
It's getting remade now, but the original is still worth a play. Even non-fans of strategy will enjoy it, although it gets much harder near the end, I couldn't beat it then.

Banjo-Kazooie Grunty's Revenge
More of an action adventure game than a platformer. Still an authentic BK experience.

Mega Man Zero series
A Metroidvania-lite game. I would even say Souls-lite. Combat is so satisfying.

Drill Dozer
One of my favorite Nintendo IPs. Looks very beautiful, and gameplay is unique.

Harvest Moon FoMT
The best HM game.

Mario Advance series
Never had an SNES. They did their job.
Castlevania Order of Ecclesia
The best Castlevania game in my opinion. Shanoa is a beauty. 😍

Chibi Robo
Kind of like Animal Crossing but with an actual purpose. One of the most beautiful DS games.

Viewtiful Joe Double Trouble
Another great transition for a console game. Can't remember if stylus was optional or mandatory, but it's still great and fun to play.

Okamiden
Got a lot of unjustified hate when it came out. Fuck the haters, this game is as good as the original Okami. I fucking said it.

Ace Attorney series
People refer to it as a "visual novel", but it felt more like a 90s Lucasart adventure to me.

Ghost Trick
From the man who brought you Dino Crisis and Ace Attorney. A puzzle game with a fantastic story, and I don't even care about stories.
Metal Gear Solid (+ VR Missions)
No need for words.

Mega Man 8
A very beautiful game. I was kinda disappointed when years later Capcom decided to go back to 8-bit for MM9-10.

Mega Man X4
The best MMX game.

Mega Man Legends 1-2
An action-RPG starring an airheaded version of Mega Man. You'll hear Roll saying "Mega Man!" at least a hundred times.

The Misadventure of Tron Bonne
One of my top 5 games of all time. It's basically 4 or 5 games in one. The "RPG" game was really amazing, one of my favorite experiences. Only downside is that TMoTB is very short, I wish they expanded it in a sequel.

Ape Escape
The best game Sony ever released in my opinion.

Tekken 3
Was mind-blowing back then.

Harvest Moon Back to Nature
A semi-remake of an N64 game, which later got two additional remakes. Aged like doo-doo, but still fun.

Street Fighter Alpha 3
The best Street Fighter in my opinion.

Digimon World 1
How Bandai never made a game like this again is very strange to me. You raise Digimon, they poop and die, you investigate an island, build a city, discover new evolutions of Digimon, make Digimon eat their poop.. A very unique game.
Ratchet and Clank 1
I remember this being a very atmospheric Space adventure game. I replayed it recently only to find Spyro 1 in space. Still fun.

Socom 1
Only Socom game I played, and it was fucking amazing. Never played the multiplayer though.

Tekken 4
Was also mind-blowing back then.

Under the Skin
A very strange and insanely fun Capcom game. You're an alien who causes troubles and tries to not be caught. It has Jill in it.

Resident Evil 4
No need for words.
Banjo-Kazooie (+ Tooie)
The best N64 platformers, now (then) more beautiful than ever.

MGS 3 HD
The definitive way to play MGS3. Don't really care for the removed minigames.

Viva Piñata
Crazy and fun. The epitome of Rare.

Perfect Dark
The original didn't age well at all. Play this instead.

Super Street Fighter IV (or any version)
The 2nd best Street Fighter in my opinion.

Dead Rising 1+2
If you played RE and felt that Jill and Chris were too stupid cause they were not using the chairs and vases around them to kill zombies, then this series is for you.

Halo Wars
Imagine if Age of Empires was not set in the boring medieval age.

Banjo-Kazooie Nuts 'n Bolts
I wish more people gave it a chance. It's not a platformer, but it's still a BK game. It has the characters, the humor, and the music that you love.
