Gizmodo gets its hands on the new iPhone prototype

I love me some Apple (and by extension, some Steve Jobs). I give them my monies all the time. But the "freedom from..." line of thinking is just terrible. I guess oppressive regimes, in giving people the freedom from things like reading naughty things about the government online, are actually the freest governments of all.

I completely understand -- and agree with -- the decision to lock iPhone OS developers out of certain middleware, but blocking applications for content reasons is something I can never get behind.

My phone fate is balancing between the Droid Incredible and the iPhone 2 depending on when the iPhone 2 comes out and if it hits Verizon.
If you are waiting for Verizon iPhone you are probably better off getting the Incredible for now, since the odds of a Verizon iPhone are getting smaller and smaller because of the leaked 5yr contract Apple had with AT&T. (Goes and cries that I cannot get a Verizon iPhone either.)

That contract was old and could have been renegotiated multiple times over by now.

There's been a lot of chatter lately about a CDMA iPhone, even from high level sources like the Wall Street Journal. I wouldn't be surprised if there was an announcement made in the fall.

That's awful. Having a demo blow up while presenting to a large group of potential clients sucks. Having that demo blow up because some asshole thought he was being funny is infuriating.

What a bunch of immature jerks these guys are.
Exactly. Have they gone to E3 and done stuff too?

And I know Kotaku is not looked upon kindly on here. At least I think it is Kotaku. Why is that? I have been on the forum for years and have yet to find out why.

Because somewhere along the line bloggers began to think they were journalists. Everyone knows there's no such thing as game journalists.

Fine. Revised for what should happen according to Apple fans.

Hogan should be publicly executed on live television.

Everyone who works at Gizmodo should have their homes burned to the ground.

Apple should be given taxpayer money to compensate them for what Gizmodo did.

So Steve Jobs' argument is:
We can say we do A, insult others for doing B, and then do B ourselves. And no one can complain unless I give them permission to.
?

In a report today, DigiTimes claims that the next-generation iPhone's display will see a number of improvements that will push it to the front of the pack among smartphones. The upgrades come as manufacturer Foxconn appears to be planning to ship 24 million of the next-generation iPhones during 2010.

The next-generation iPhone's display has been the topic of significant discussion since Daring Fireball's John Gruber reported that it would carry a resolution of 960 x 640 pixels, up from 480 x 320 in the current iPhone. Despite the appearance of several prototype iPhones in recent weeks, the only confirmation of the higher resolution display has been a qualitative comparison with the current iPhone suggesting that it is the case. DigiTimes' report today again suggests that the new iPhone will in fact carry a 960 x 640 screen.

The next-generation iPhone's display will also reportedly adopt fringe-field switching (FFS), a technology that should improve viewing angles and performance in bright sunlight. The report also notes that the panel on the new iPhone is 33% thinner than in current models, allowing for increased battery size.

In addressing the brains behind the forthcoming iPhone, the report claims that users can expect an ARM Cortex A8 processor, of which the Apple A4 processor used in the iPad and observed in one of the prototypes is an implementation. The report claims, however, that it will also offer 512 MB of RAM.This information conflicts with evidence from the prototype that recently surfaced in Vietnam, which carries only 256 MB of RAM, the same as in both the iPad and the iPhone 3GS.

Apple is widely expected to introduce the new iPhone on June 7th at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference.

All over my face.

That is so much better than the current white iPhone.

I still can't believe those visible seams are real in the post-Unibody age.

Eh, you aren't going to get a unibody aluminum iPhone cause of the radio. Now the next gen iPod Touch just might... and that would be pretty hawt.

The new design is growing on me.

The white one looks especially good and shall be mine.

I was wondering more about the specifics.

I've only been here a couple of years, but from what I understand there wasn't a huge internet catastrophe, but a series of moderate picard facepalms. They get things wrong on occasion, post things they don't really grasp as if they do, and have problems with their published copy that makes them look unprofessional.

Beyond all that, there was a gap of time, felt like months, when several posts per day on Kotaku just happened to be page one GAF material. With no credit to be seen, there were some feelings of lazy journalism.

I can't be bothered to fact check any of that, but there ya go. A mod or more active poster might know more specifics.

Personally, I came to think of Kotaku as immature children when they fell for a CAGCast prank about a slim X360 called the Xbox Pure or something like that. Someone just typed out an somewhat-officially-worded "memo" from Ballmer, printed it out (not even on letterhead, just on blank paper) and took a picture of it and someone submitted it. Kotaku ran it immediately, then when told about the prank (let alone how stupid it was to run a photo of a piece of paper as a story) they said CAG had lost all credibility. Cue facepalm.

The white one looks infinitely better than the current white 3GS. When I get this phone it's going to be hard choosing which one to go with.

Yeah, like iPods you skip a generation.

I am literally frothing for this now after that pic.

Yeah, I didn't see enough of an improvement from the 3G to the 3GS to make the jump worth it. A speed bump and video camera capabilities wasn't enough. This is a serious upgrade, the screen, camera, size, battery life, casing, resolution, ram(?), chipset. Just about everything has been upgraded big time. Can't wait for this beauty.

I love this new design, and by the time the contract on my current phone runs out (Or it breaks and i have to ditch the contract early) this new iPhone will be out. But as much as i want one, i can't afford that shit.

How do they justify the ridiculous price? I mean, i know smartphones aren't cheap at all, but iPhones really do top it off.
I wouldn't buy anything else apple, but this, c'mon guys :(

It'll be $99 for 16Gb, $199 for 32Gb and $299 for 64Gb. I don't think you can consider that unfair pricing, seems inline with smartphone pricing in general (and possibly a bit better considering the competition only gives you 8gb SD card if you're lucky).

you are out of your mind if you think apple is going to put the new phone at 99$ for 16gb :lol

What do you mean by those prices? Because here in the UK the phone on its own currently (16gb 3GS) is like £440.
Shit if that was the pricing i'd jump right in there.

Ok, maybe that won't exist, but I can see it being $199 and $299 for 32Gb and 64Gb respectively.

Still I think there's a possibility for the iPhone at $99 for 16gb, it's subsidized by the contract and Apple get's a monthly chunk of your monthly payment anyways. They can afford to bring it in at a low price like that and still profit.

Apple could drop the price on every single one of their items and still make a tidy profit, but they wont. If anything they may keep the 3GS at the entry point 99$ price, like the current 3G is

Shit if that was the pricing i'd jump right in there.

You guys don't get subsidized iPhone prices with a contract in the UK? I thought O2 had $0 iPhones at one point with a contract?
