What megapixel should we expect on the camera?
3.0 minimum. Maybe 5?

...but who knows.

It would be nice if they got up to the "good enough" range of about 5mp or more, like you said.

I've used Sony phones with full on 10mp and it made me soo jealous. My 2mp 3G is barely fit for drunken facebook photos... :P

I long for the day that my iPhone can be a worth-enough replacement for my tiny digital camera.

DSLR, still a ways away.

The rumor is 5MP, and 8MP for the 2011 model. 5MP is the modern day average, with phones like the Droid Incredible carrying 8MP.

I gotta say it looks pretty beautiful. I love the aluminum rim look, much better than the silver plastic bezel.. though no curvature on the back is odd, it's acceptable since the back is a glass feel rather than aluminum or whatever. Only thing that seems a bit 'off' in the design is the seams on the side and moreso the circular buttons..

We're almost there... I don't know if this is the phone to do it though. The real hindrance is zoom, not MP.

Well.. that'll never happen of course.. unless we're ok with using a sidebag to carry our phones around :P

A cellphone camera can never match a DSLR for many reasons. One of them is lack of optical zoom. Another is a real flash that works beyond 10ft. Both of those things would require a bulge on the phone that would make it a bad phone.

Yeah... I mean DSLRs themselves are kind of "bad cameras" only in the sense that they're never portable enough, but it's a necessary evil for picture quality.

I hear ya. I just hate having more than 1 device if I don't have to, especially when it comes to "portable" stuff.

iPhone's already replaced my DS and my GPS. Camera is next, baby!

Fuuuuck I want to replace my 3GS with this but it'd be too damn expensive to break off mid-contract and buy it unsubsidized :(

I'm praying that we don't have to wait until next spring for the iPad to get a front-facing video camera. Once that thing can do videoconferencing, oh yes, it will be mine.

Took this the other day on my 3GS. It's really not that bad of a camera.

Why would you have to break off your contract, though? Your carrier won't support mini-sim card?

huh.. the extra MP actually does make a difference. Still, that's a rather small pic.

2 mp is grainy shit. I barely ever use it anymore.

I'm eligible for upgrade December 2010 so I'll get to pick from every good smartphone out this year. However, it's also such a long and painful wait.

He wouldn't have to break the contract, but he'd have to buy the new iPhone at full retail $599

love the design. Should look slick as hell if they remove the seams. And i don't get how it doesn't look "Apple-ish" anymore. If anything this brings the iPhone up to date with the designs you've been seeing on the iMacs and macbooks lately. If anything the shiny white/black plastic look of the current 3GS is outdated and matches Apple's older designs rather than their current line. The new iPhone basically looks like a shrunken down iMac. Smooth brushed aluminum sides, squared, with a black backside.

Megapixels do mean shit when we're still wallowing in 2 or 3 MP.. it's not a good enough photo to print out, or blow up on an HD screen. But yeah having a good sensor is what matters.

Megapixels has nothing at all to do with grain. That’s your image sensor.

Here’s the 5MP Canon 1D (a 2001 dslr) : http://www.dpreview.com/galleries/reviewsamples/albums/canon-eos-1d-review-samples/slideshow

Better images than any point and shoot.
I used to sell cameras. I just mean that the camera of the iphone 3G itself which happens to be 2mp: it's a grainy piece of shit. And the digital image is small.

I have no problem paying full retail again, I did it for the OG and the 3GS. I am so deep in lust with this design that I'll be pretty disapointed if the final product is drastically different.

have they started selling iphones off contract at apple stores? I thought there was a story that they were going to begin doing this

Gotcha, make sure to specify that then or else you’ll spread a sea of misinformation to those who don’t know better.

Good point.. actually re-reading what I wrote it does seem like I was was talking about the MP specifically. I just meant 3G camera vs 3GS.

The Nexus is a joke and I hope Google or HTC comes out with a new hardware release of it or a successor and put that dog out to pasture. god what an awful experience with that pos.
Oh just shut the fuck up. We all know you had a bad experience, but the phone is still one of the #3 on the market in features and specs.

I do not like it.
Since when is completely flat a good thing?

I have a feeling it's going to feel like a retarded brick in my hand.

I'm buying it anyway, I still have the 1G so I should quit bitchin

MP don't mean shit. the ONLY difference the number of pixels make to professional photographers is in regards to intended media size so there are no scaling or interpolation issues. The big deal is lens quality, sensor size, sensor type, etc. 5MP could very well turn out a better 4x6 print than an 11MP camera if one is a point and shoot with a shitty 1/8th inch CMOS sensor while the other is a 1" sCMOS sensor.

HD screens max out at 2 megapixels :P

It doesn't matter if it's 3, 5 or 134 megapixels. If the CMOS sensor is cheap, quality suffers. I'd rather take 2MP photos with a good sensor than having a trillion-pixel resolution photo full of artifacts, banding, bleeding and grain.

Being a phone... we can only hope for mediocre at best. People comparing cellphone cameras to DSLRs are mad :lol

iPhone cameras to date have been exceedingly bad. looking forward to it being upgraded.

regardless, I'll continue keeping my Nikon close at hand. :lol

No, he isn't. If he wanted to be rational, he wouldn't call the Nexus One a POS. Do you really think I need to refute that beyond calling him out for the bullshit that statement is?

I hope it has an AMOLED screen like the Desire or Nexus has.

I hate the screen of my 3GS, it looks so bad compared to those newer ones.

That's a good question. I'm surprised their breakdown hasn't yielded any info on the screen beyond vague comments about the size. If I had to venture a guess, I'd say yes, but who knows with Apple. Could be some IPS display or other crazy decision.
