And also this fiasco: http://blogs.zdnet.com/Bott/?p=359

Fuck Gizmodo.

Wow, what a bunch of douche bags. The guys at Gizmodo circle jerk to any apple related product. They're reviews are dismal and shouldn't be taken seriously. If you want to see an example look at their review of the HP Envy 15. They gave it possibly the only bad review on the internet because it looked too much like a Macbook Pro :lol

Right, but is it overkill for the size? Time will only tell.
It really isn't though. I have used high res LCD screens on high end cameras. While a higher res screen on a phone isn't "necessary" by any means, it definitely is noticeable and looks cool ... which is the whole appeal of iPhone really: cool high end tech.. not just "good enough" practicality.

Yes, better phrasing, until you got to the point where you said it was inferior. It isn't. The specs are still top notch, and the difference between Sense and Google Experience is all in how you see the product. You got to stop mixing facts with opinion. You may not like the N1 compared to say the Desire or Incredible, but inferior? no.
Specs are top notch for sure... but I like a phone that... you know... actually works. So far, the Droid and Droid Incredible have better track records combined in comparison to the N1.

But whatever-- you want to bitch at me, shoot me a PM, this doesn't really pertain to the iPhone discussion.

If we can take the story at face value.. It's not too far fetched.

If you found an iPhone at a club, either you'd poke around in it to see which one it was, or you'd ask someone who knew what they were talking about (and it's an iPhone... 75% of people know a little bit about them)

Once you found out it wasn't the usual iPhone.. who would you call? Probably a news group specializing in tech gadgets.
You are replying as if there are prototypes of phones all over the place.
If I found a phone at a club, I'd see if it was unlocked so I could return it to the owner. That's it. I'm sure a very small percentage of your 75% would be popping covers off of other people's property just to see what type of phone it is.

Now, if I did realize it was something unique, then yes I would report it to someone in the business of publishing such news.

The GB is listed on the back of the phone. Popping off the case is the first thing most people would do.

Then when you popped off that case..... oh shit.

=(

Haha, my old cell phone :lol

But seriously, the new design kicks ass. The only question is whether or not the back is a scratch magnet because this is one of those designs I don't want to cover up with a stupid case.

intentional leak to stifle the HTC incredible for sure. the HD2 sold out at tmobile in 4 hours after launch. apples been all in HTCs shit. funny the phone looks more HTC than apple.

Sorry I responded to the person who brought up the N1 in such light...

It's really funny how blinded you are by your experience...because...you know...my Nexus One hasn't had much of any hiccup since I got the same day you got yours. Your view of the 'track record' is just a little biased and a little limited.

I don't need to bitch at you though because I'm happy with my purchase, but the next time you want to blatantly rip on a product because of your previous bias, you might want to back it up or just not post it at all.

Well, yeah. That XXGB would have made me say 'hmm, that peculiar'.:lol

I wonder how easy it is to tell by touch which way round it should be when you reach for it from your pocket now that symmetrical in every way.

From what I read it seems that while the back is a 'similar' material to the front it is highly unlikely it is identical. I'd imagine you could tell without looking fairly easily.

RE: the screen resolution discussion, Gruber just posted a nice little write-up about it:

http://daringfireball.net/2010/04/why_960_by_640

The next-gen iPhone is shooting for that caliber of resolution — not merely to exceed the resolution of competing devices, but to rival the optical quality of print. A 3.5-inch diagonal display with 960 × 640 pixels works out to around 325-330 ppi. (Maybe even higher, if it’s more like a 3.4-inch diagonal.) That’s fewer “dots” per inch than on, say, a 600 dpi printer, but when combined with anti-aliasing, I believe the on-screen typography on the next-gen iPhones will be indistinguishable, or nearly so, from high-quality print. There will be four pixels packed into the space now occupied by a single pixel.

We're still talking about controlled leaks.

Because it makes sense to put an unfinished design out for the public to judge as a finished product and to completely wreck the importance and hype of WWDC.

That is so hot.

You are still going off the assumption it is an unfinished design. I think you're getting nervous it may be final.

What's the point of increasing the resolution so dramatically if the screen size is the same?

Seems pointless to me.

Highest I have seen in person is the iPhone, I think... I don't spend my weekends in mobile phone stores.

List of displays by pixel density

My nano 3g has a display with 204 ppi, really sharp and detailed - even for a tiny display.

On the subject of the iPhone 4, the photos make it out to be more bulky than it could actually be. Judging by the headphone port the metal frame looks to be just over 6mm thick.
Looks more like the rest of the 'unibody' product range. :)

So how many GB is this new iPhone thing they "found"?

Or do we not know?
XXGB.

This baby is clearly using some sort of new tech where they can store infinite data in a miniature black hole.

All we can do is assume one way or the other.

I don't give enough of a shit about what hardware looks like to be nervous.

not "for sure" at all.

If you think Apple would leak this design then you know nothing of the way Apple works. They may leak some pricing or vague info to big places like NYT or WSJ but they don’t leak a complete device to a gadget blog.

they honestly don’t give a shit about the Incredible reviews. they said their piece with the OS 4.0 preview and would’ve revealed this in June and controlled the message their way.

No, just posting on internet message boards about mobile phones. Far less geeky.

You don't need to live in a mobile phone store to know this stuff, just know someone with a Droid or any of the other phones out there with higher resolution than the iPhone. The difference is impressive regardless of the small screen size.

$5k seems too low. A scoop like this has to be worth $20-25k you'd think.
Do tech sites really make enough off advertising dollars to make up for that?

Why do you feel that you have to defend it so strongly that it isn't a controlled leak...its here people are speculating...let them speculate...

There is a lot of smart speculation going on. Then there is stupid speculation. This sort of snark and cynicism at everything that happens is bad enough when talking about game reviews.

Nervous? What the fuck? It's a fucking phone.

In fairness, the article has an Update that says "We hear it's $5000, with a bonus for traffic."

Considering they've had to shut down the comments because of traffic, it might have actually been a better deal than even the $10k that was first reported.

However, in the February 20, 2006 issue of New York Magazine, Jossip founder David Hauslaib estimated Gawker.com's annual advertising revenue to be at least $1 million two years ago, and possibly over $2 million a year[4]. Combined with low operating costs — mostly web hosting fees and writer salaries — Denton was already believed to be turning a healthy profit in 2006.[5] In 2009, the corporation was estimated to be worth $300 million, with $60 million in advertising revenues and more than $30 million in operating profit.

Your new here aren't ya?

Go check out the 4.0 OS thread. Swap out "iPhone" and "multitasking" and you might think we're talking about genocide and terrorism.

$5k is ridiculous, which is why you know the whole story about gizmodo paying for it is a red herring.

hell i woulda paid $5.5k for it just to mess around with applefans :D

:D It's hard not to quickly learn who cares SO much more about Apple news than others.

As others have said, AT&T does not have a 4G net in place. It will not be 4G. Next year.

I think you're starting to be a dick in this thread.

I'm excited for the possibility of video chat being a feature on this phone! Is there any more info on that? However, I prefer the rounded edges as opposed to the more square/sharp edges. Oh well, I'll still be getting it no matter what.

If the screen is a little smaller, then even old iPhone apps will look a little better on it.

Looks cheap and ugly to me. Contract is up on both lines, so I'll cop regardless.

The problem I've read about the N1 is the multi-touch bug and the non-responsive capacitive buttons (has the wireless been fixed yet?). Both have been fixed on the Incredible. The Incredible also has 8gb internal memory, better camera, and the FM radio is enabled, so I wouldn't call the N1 identical.

But then again I wouldn't call the N1 a POS either.
