Gizmodo gets its hands on the new iPhone prototype

The design seems fine. It would be nice if Apple cleaned up the aluminum strip area, though. I wonder if the user-removable battery is just a prototype feature? One thing that concerns me is that, if memory serves, the consensus was that the curved design was more comfortable to hold.

While I have no interest in video chat, I'm curious about what developers will do with the front-facing camera in other apps.

In any case, I'm ready to upgrade my 3G. :D

All of this is still true.

Well not for recent releases. I mean the iPad was announced months ago and still hasn't come out in 3G flavors. I miss the old "hey here's our new iPod, aaaaaand you can buy it right now".

Anyone wish that border/bezel/rim on the back was a rubbery plastic? I can't tell too well from the pics but it seems to be slightly above the flat glass back? How awesome would that be.

Probably not though.. :|

Things with 3G antennas have to be announced ahead of time or patents and the FCC will unintentionally leak it first.

Every single other Apple product is still released right away. It's illogical not to.

Yeah, now I'm even more confused about the iPad not having an isight camera.

They needed to announce the device and release the SDK early, otherwise the thing would launch with no software. It was in their best interest to get it in front of people.

Same for OS4.

The latest hardware revisions for the Macbooks came without warning and leaked information, and were immediately purchasable the day of their announcement.

Holy crap @ the haters:

iPhone 3G: This shit it ridiculous! No flash, horrible screen, no multitasking, no copy and paste. Get a Droid, yo. :lol :lol

After all this shit has been announced:
I don't get what all the fuss is about. This stuff already existed in input any of the 10000 Android models here.

Keep that shit out of here. The iPhone, hardware and OS is improving at a fast rate. Don't come in every fuckin Apple thread to spoil the party with your points. Because even IF the iPhone did everything the Droid does, you STILL wouldn't like it, because its Apple. The supposed poster boy for consumer whorism. We get it. You're different. No one cares. GTFO.

Not hating at all on the new iPhone as I'll probably get it to replace my 3G, but I can sort of understand where they're coming from. I think some people just want to see Apple in a better leadership position rather than just by numbers. When the iPhone first came out, it was a significant step forward in what a phone should be in so many ways with so many new things brought to the table. Since then though, it seems more like they're just adding stuff that existed on other phones instead of taking that new step that tries to do something new and different and show what kind of the leader they are. People want to see something new that they either couldn't think of or it hasn't been done yet. So that's probably why people get disappointed.

No different to putting the camera in the iPod nano but holding it back from the iPod touch in the same round of revisions.

They're calling the Apple engineer? That seems pretty douchey to me. Wonder what that conversation's going to be like. "Heeeeey buddy. We found your phone. ... How's life?"

It cannot possibly be good to be that (EX, I'm sure) Apple employee.

Fuck off, no-one in this thread needs to apologize for their interest in the iPhone and in particular this hugely interesting development, probably the biggest Apple leak in history. Not to mention the post count doesn't take into account the content of the posts, a high post count could just as easily be some anti-iPhone troll shitting up the thread. Which let's face it is depressingly common these days.

I got an idea! Let’s not post when any tech news story breaks, ever!

I guess I should stop posting in E3 conference threads, too. fuck! :lol

Yeah... and the same goes for all the people who post in threads about FFXIII, Avatar, Obama... y'all are obviously just paid shills.

Really? :lol

Funny thing is I'm number 2 on that list and I don't give a shit about Apple. I rock a PC. I just want a new phone.

This is really stretching it for criticism.

what you say is true but, after getting my 3g on a 3 yr plan i feel ripped off.not saying i didn't see this coming, but, apple only cares for the customers who are willing to buy their phones year after year. they don't care about the old users. two years in and my phone becomes obsolete? look i understand you can't stop change, and i don't want too, but, if your not going to take time and take care for your older customers, then count me out. i do not care who's OS is better than who-ever-else. i just want a company will at least acknowledge the fact there are users that need a smart phone that will last long as if not longer than their contract. of course i understand that they're giant cooperations who don't give a shit blah blah blah. but i am just trying to say i am stuck. /rant

wait until they show that front-facing camera off.

and wait until app developers get ahold of the necessary API's. it's going to change our experience all over again.

You'll get along with G1 owners.

This is how every smartphone company operates.

That's really due more to the current model used by cellphone companies than it is Apple.

Ok, what was the last ground breaking thing the iPhone has added that people can get excited over? The front facing camera might be the first interesting thing being added, but before today, what else was there? That's why the complaints typically are "LOL, Droid or Pre already did that"

At least with the Palm Pre and Web OS, I saw something new and interesting in what they were trying to accomplish which had me excited for the future of that platform. It's too bad Palm is in such a bad state that they are.

I don't think it's a stretch to see why people are criticizing with the typical comment of some other platform already had it because it's true. As much as I love my iPhone, and as much as I'm likely to stick with the next iteration when the 4G or whatever its called comes out, I too would like to see Apple push the envelope and introduce something new instead of just giving me what other phones already have and yet still leave out things that should already be there.

I completely agree with this. It's something like this that is what I would like to see from them but that wasn't really known until today and still in a way not confirmed even though its likely true. I'm just saying I can understand why people criticize the last couple of iterations of features because they do have a valid point. That doesn't make me love my iPhone any less, but some of the complaints are valid.

hey still an nice(?) phone
Yes, and I will probably be using my 3G until the 2011 update, which will still be a nice phone in it's 3rd year. Admittedly, it will mostly be because I may be abroad for a large part of the rest of this year, so I can't justify getting into a long contract for services that I will not use, and I do not want to buy unsubsidized, even if it may be "cheaper" in the long run.

look if you have the money and time. why are you complaining?

People were saying this about the first iPhone compared to the phones of its time.

Nice way to sidestep. Point out the innovating changes. I think the front facing camera is a good example of that. With the original iPhone, I can easily point out to you differences that easily stood out before it was even released that you could just tell from the unveiling. Safari and visual voice mail easily pop into mind as stuff that was well beyond other phones. Those two reasons alone got me excited for one.

shadowcomplex said:

I'm not. I'm just pointing out I can understand why someone would and they have a perfectly valid criticism when doing so. It's not unjustified.

Products are not released so you can buy every one. The market and technology supports a new phone year after year so... why not? What about the people who didn't buy the phone you did... why would they jump on board 2 or 3 years later for the same old phone you bought in 08?

I could have told you this when you bought your iPhone years ago: Each year there will be a new model. It's the way of the world.

Marty Chinn said:

The software.

That's what was innovative about the first iPhone and what will be innovative about every single iPhone and Android phone until the end of time. Unless the hardware starts letting us time travel.

I agree, you are exactly the type of person that Apple are counting on. Why buy something if it doesnt totally match up to your expectations?

I really want an iPad, but will wait until it has all the features I consider acceptable before splashing out cash on it. Same with macbooks. no blu-ray, no money.

And point me to the software. Multitasking? iBooks? Video recording? Voice dialing? A lot of the stuff they have announced lately existed in other phones that is all software based. That's why you get people rolling their eyes and saying either Android or Palm OS did it already. What part of that is hard to understand? I'm glad to be getting the features finally, but I can understand why someone on another phone would say that. I've seen stuff in other phones that peaked my interest and made me consider switching when my contract was up. I think some people from other phones would like to see the same. I heavily considered a Palm Pre 2nd iteration when it was announced but it's not even a possibility now cuz of where Palm is.

-sorry to disagree-
actually i kinda like the mac-book (only the pro). it will last you at least 4 years. plus you have both max os x and windows. Linux is just to unstable for me even though i love the experience.

this is going to be my next phone even if they don't have a good battery life this time. The poor battery life of older iphones is why I haven't bought on yet, but this new device looks so sharp and I just want it.

assuming the final device looks like these pictures, it looks a lot better than the older iphones. I'd say the old iphones look like the PSP-2000 compared to the PSP-100, as in very cheap and budget compared to it.

even if they brand it as a premium iphone to go along with the regular one, I'd be willing to pay extra.
