By Lisa Johnson
One of the world's greatest, Academy Award-nominated actresses will be starring on cable TV. Glenn Close has just signed on to become a series regular on the FX police drama The Shield during its upcoming fourth season, which premiers in March.
Close, who has been nominated for five Oscars and won one Emmy (Serving in Silence: The Margarethe Cammermeyer Story), will appear in all 13 episodes. Production begins in January.
Close's role was created specifically for her. She will play a new captain at the precinct, where she will oversee Detective Vic Mackey, played by Michael Chiklis - who has won an Emmy and a Golden Globe for best actor for his work on the series.
It is expected that Close will draw female audiences into the male-skewing series add new female viewers. And viewers are needed. After averaging 3.3 million total viewers over its first two seasons, Shield's numbers fell 24% in its third season.
