Guys, watched the film. I think the critics hit the nail directly on the head by giving the following consensus: " The film received generally positive reviews from critics, with praise for its visual effects and action sequences, but with criticism towards the writing of the human characters." You know, Kaiju fans who wanna see Godzilla and Kong slugging it out, and Kaiju brawls in general, they will rejoice after this film.

I felt like Legendary and Warner Bros executives told director Adam Wingard to make/compress his film (to) under 2 hours. Especially after the critical and commercial flop of Godzilla King of the Monsters, since Godzilla Vs Kong's filming wrapped up in April 2019.
Overall, it feels like it got shrunken down somehow. There could have more stuff going on, more fleshing out of team Kong. Team Kong has soul, there's soul in there. It feels rough-hewn and rough around the edges at times, but it's a nice team. Team Godzilla, on the other end of the spectrum, offers some gags and laughs at times, for what it's worth. The rest of the characters are just "fillers".
And last but not least, there's the issue of Zhang Ziyi and Jessica Henwick (her assistance) who got axed completely. Who knows what kind of part did Zhang's arc play in the build-up of the story.

Something I totally forgot to mention.
On the big screen at the cinemas, some of the CGI did look really bad, especially on Godzilla when there are close up shots of his face.
Probably why so many films choose to do action scenes at night, to hide the flaws.

And honestly, the movie could have been shortened and been even better, the Millie Bobbie Brown and conspiracy theorist dudes scenes could have all been cut.

With all the hype about the kaiju fight scenes, the fight scene in Hong Kong felt and looked strangely.....fake? I don't know exactly how to describe it, but it felt like those buildings should have splintered into a billion pieces when the monsters smashed onto them, instead they seemed like huge indestructible pillars. It just looked....weird. It's almost as if they were trying to save money on CG and can't afford to render all that destruction. But if you're not going to go all-out orgasmic CG destruction, why bother setting up a huge fight in the middle of Hong Kong?

Maybe I'm crazy here but I think I actually liked KOTM more than this one. This one was just mainly a Kong movie with Godzilla thrown in, while KOTM was a real Godzilla movie(plus it had Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidorah).

Sense of scale got totally lost during the Hong Kong fight because the camerawork treats it like you're watching The Expendables or something with a lot of fast cuts and weird "camera moves along with the head/arm" shots.

It really needed more "looking up from street level" shots, something Godzilla 2014 did masterfully.

I see this opinion often when it comes to monster movies and giant robot movies. It’s weird that after all these years Hollywood still doesn’t quite get it. People are there for MONSTERS and MYTHOS, not a bunch of boring side characters.

CGI is expensive = less monsters on screen.

That being said, theres a shit ton of time theres a monster on the screen in this. The last 40ish minutes are solid kaiju porn.

This movie was also MADE for HDR screens. It looked gorgeous . High contrast neons, blues and oranges, sparks and flashing hues of cgi bliss on the screen. This film is a showpiece. People will be calibrating their TVs off this film.

That part in the hollow earth looked so bad, the green blood monster looked like it was made of rubber. Other than that the CGI was okayish. Movie is pretty lame tho.

Just finished watching it today in IMAX.

I thought the movie was damn fun! Human characters were not that bad and I really enjoyed the relationship between the little girl and Kong.

That first fight in the ocean was damn awesome. The action absolutely delivers! I actually think this is the best of the three movies.
The human story is serviceable, and the pacing is on point. The only thing I didn't really like was the Hollow Earth angle.
Both Kong and Godzilla had a pretty good personality. Overall, I was very satisfied and one of them actually won the fight.

Nah there's a bunch of Netflix's movies that take that title. Admittedly I probably would have liked it more if Kong wasn't in it.

To be fair I understand the big CGI monsters are probably by far the most expensive part of these movies.
I get that they need humans characters to stretch out the runtime with something cheaper than big CG monsters.

But they could at least make those parts better.
They could have given the little kong girl a better and more fleshed out story arc instead of just having her spending the second half of the movie standing around looking sad. Could have made the whole mechagodzilla angle more interesting since the core reasoning behind it wasn't even bad (someone wanting a weapon for humanity to fight back) instead of having them be some generic evil corp, with some generic evil CEO unmasked by a truly horrible Scooby Doo teen investigation squad. Could have fleshed out the Hollow Earth part with some fun exploration resulting in interesting lore or worldbuilding.
