GOG News and Updates 2014

Call of Pripyat is an excellent game and absolutely worth owning. Even as someone who typically finds open-world games boring as shit, I adored it.

I do need to play through the original again sometime. I didn't really like it that much the first time around, due to it feeling very unpolished, but maybe I'll dig it more this time around...

Either way, Pripyat is where it's at. Buy it, kids!

CoP feels positively walled in compared to the original game, but at the same time, it's not a bad feeling.

Awesome.
Was thinking of picking one up of the STALKER games during the christmas Steam sales, but this is even better. Just bought all three :)

All these highly recommended qualifying new releases are keeping me from getting to more of the already released games! Going to be adding six newly released games to the recommended list (5 from just this week), thanks largely in part to these recent STALKER releases. Very happy to see them on GOG.

Shadow of Chernobyl has tons of mods, the most prominent seems to be Complete, LURK, ZRP, and then there's tons of others that build off ZRP like Absolute / Argus textures, Dynamic Shaders, Weather Overhauled, and even still upcoming mods like Stalker Rebalanced 1.2 which may be worthwhile.

Clear Sky has well, Complete, which is unique in that it is essentially mandatory if you don't want to hate the game. There's also MYSTERY too I guess. But Clear Sky gets the most hate of the three games for sure, however it's not enough hate! Still enough positive impressions, and some amount of the hate stems from problems fixed in Complete.

Then there's Call of Pripyat, which is surprisingly probably the best received now though the original still puts up a strong fight. CoP has a ton of mods too, MISERY, SMRTER, Sigerous, Complete (though CoP Complete is by different authors than SoC/CS Complete and isn't rec. as highly), as well as AtmosFear and a few others.

There's certainly no shortage of mods for the STALKER games. So in the recommended games' graphics, the mod section really just lists out the more popular ones from top to bottom, but isn't really complete (no pun intended).

DRM Free STALKER ? Bought all over my face.

Heres hoping they didn't forget to include the correct user.ltx file for SoC ... otherwise you get wonky mouse aim and iffy graphics.

Adding my voice to the choir already praising stalker. I never finished Clear Sky but the original and COP are amazing games!

Bah, nope just like every other digital version, SoC doesn't install the correct user.ltx, it generates a new one, meaning different feel to the mouse aim (some acceleration) and weird graphical anomalies like shadows stretching at the edges of the screen, and also not as detailed from a distance.

May have to post about in on the GoG forums and see if they can update it .....

I've actually never played the STALKER games before, so I'm guessing now is the time to get them (even though I probably won't play them for a while)?

I forgot today was thursday and a release day so I didn't check the main gog page till now, Holy shit! Stalker is one of the big names.series I was hoping for soon, been waiting and hoping for a awhile for those

Jazzpunk (2014), Adventure, released today. Busy week. Looks like it's a brand new game, with quite an unusual twist to it. That's about all I got from now, not much more info in the GOG release thread either.

The Earth games were never heavily recommended when they released as they weren't bolded, but I don't think impressions were awful either. Haven't played them personally.

There's a Quick Look of Jazzpunk on Giant Bomb. It looks very interesting, full of character and quirky humour but it will not be everyone's cup of tea. It reminds me of the Blendo games with a lot of charm but basic visuals.

It's in my Cart even though i'm playing M&MXL.

Yes, I noticed the OT. Not enough impressions to get it bolded (not any at all really), but there's potential. I'll keep an eye on it, and in a week or two, see if it's gotten enough feedback to have it listed in the OP as a recommended purchase. Seems like a shorter game too, at around 3 hours if you take your time, which I guess is good, in that it doesn't overstay its welcome.

FWIW, the best pick from TopWare's list is easily the Earth 2150 Trilogy.

Gorky 17 isn't bad, but chess-as-an-adventure-tactics-game might not be everyone's cup of tea. And it's pretty hard.

Septerra Core is a pretty run-of-the-mill jRPG (though interestingly the devs were US-based).

anybody else getting slow download speeds from GOG? im getting like 200 kbps at best

It was slow a while ago but now it seems to be back to normal.

And with that, all caught up on the new GOG releases for now (barring maybe Jazzpunk)! STALKER comes of course, very highly recommended. Not much else like it (Metro 2033 did not quite cut it), but at least you get a very large amount of hours of gaming from the three games, even if they don't all play quite the same, they're all incredibly atmospheric and have the ability to deliver many memorable experiences. Clear Sky is the least prized of the bunch, but it still brings enough recommendations to get included.

The Banner Saga is another solid pick. Definitely won't disappoint in the graphics/audio department, but the gameplay can be slightly hit-or-miss as it's a bit different than the traditional expectations of a strategy RPG, and impressions indicate there's a fair bit of confusion over the upgrade system, as it's possible to spend resources on characters that die or leave the story without much notice, and there's a bit of flak over the final battle. Still, there's promise under the flaws, and with luck the subsequent chapters will improve the formula and continue to deliver the very impressive audio/visuals of the first entry.

Octodad from what I gathered, is worth a more than the quick glance I first gave it. It didn't really interest me until I started reading the impressions. Now I'm convinced it's definitely a game worth looking in to, if you want a humorous, original experience. Controls are sometimes a little frustrating, but the game is short enough that it doesn't really hinder the experience much, and in some ways, the tricky controls are very much intentional and add to the humor.

The last addition is Risk of Rain, another roguelike-like or something, but this time with co-op, which really drives the experience from good to incredible from impressions. Has plenty of unlockables as you'd expect. Lots of dying, lots of enemies to fight, and very hectic. Also many different classes to try out, so there's quite a bit of replay value in it as well.

Bizarre .... V-Sync is enabled all the time on the GoG versions of Stalker -

"Actually, v-sync is always on in our versions of the STALKER games.

During tests we got about 2500 - 4000 FPS in the menus, and there were reports of all sorts of unpleasant consequences (from squeal coming from the graphic card, through interference on the sound card audible on the speakers, to overheating of the hardware), so we decided it's safer to force v-sync."

"V-sync is forced by modified game renderer files - you can ask GOG Support, and they'll send you the original files."

I've been wanting to go through shadowman again sometime. I last played it around 2001-2002 on Dreamcast. I started the GOG version up a while back but I didn't play very much.

Just picked up Shelter for $2.49

Experience the wild as a mother badger sheltering her cubs from harm. On their journey they get stalked by a bird of prey, encounter perils of the night, river rapids crossings, big forest fires and the looming threat of death by starvation.

Should be novel and fun.

What does the language pack for Critter Chronicles offer? German audio? Cuz I'd like to play german PnC games with german audio if possible.

Two more releases for this week:
- Dark Fall 3 - Lost Souls (2009), Adventure
- Downfall (2009), Adventure

Both look like horror adventure games, haven't heard much else about them though. I'll look in to them a little later if there are no impressions and add them in the recommended games if they're notable (same as with any other releases).

I need to try out downfall. That same studio made "The Cat Lady"

I missed this and I've been wanting to play these games for such a long time now. Goddamn it.

Subscribe to the thread! It's easy to keep up with, only gets ~5 posts a day or less :p

It'll definitely go on sale again, maybe even for 75%+ off next time, summer sale if not sooner.

In amongst the rather awesome pile of promos, there's been a couple of releases, too: Steamworld Dig and Eschalon: Book III.

Quite a busy week! Seven games, two huge sales and a freebie.

I just noticed that Fez was updated. What update was that?
It's called Universal update.

Something to bring it in line with the PS4 version, maybe?

Edit: Ah, no, it looks like it's actually quite old, fixing a number of bugs in the first-released version.

Steamworld Dig on GOG now? GOG's really been cleaning up these last few weeks. Glad I held off on buying the game until now.
