So, out of curiousity, do we know when Rollercoaster Tycroon and Riddick are going to disappear from GOG? Fallout disappearing reminds me that, especially with games like those, it's only a matter of time.

There was a scare when Atari was auctioning off properties but everything seems to have stuck around. I don't know what exactly happened. It is probably a good idea to get the games you want ASAP. I don't think Riddick ever returned to steam after being pulled.

I think this was the event http://www.gog.com/promo/atari_weekend_promo_120713

"our first priority is returning the content to Steam." They won't even acknowledge GOG

Not that this article really says anything new, but eh:

http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/130970-GOGs-Rambourg-DRM-Is-Terrible-Sales-Are-Problematic

DRM just doesn't work, and is terrible as a concept; resistance from gamers is stronger than ever before, but GOG isn't worried that its fans will exploit its DRM free system. GOG customers tend to download a game only once, and when GOG launched a 30-day money back guarantee program, customer support queries only increased by a modest amount.

The bigger problem is sales. Rambourg acknowledges that discounts have their uses, and that companies have to adapt to the market to survive. Yet at the same time he's a little worried that gamers are beginning to believe "their hobby is worth roughly the same as an iPhone app." That's bound to hurt the industry in the long run, as gamers start refusing to pay full price in the expectation of a sale discount.

Honestly, I kinda agree with that second one. People seem like they've stopped shelling out $15 or even $10 for a game, in favor of waiting for it to go on sale. I understand why, obviously, but that can't be healthy.

Why can't it be?
Look at PixelJunk Eden on Steam, they discounted the game 90% off for 8 hours and doubled their lifetime income in that time.

Let's hope Disney notices their goldmine of Lucasarts titles this year are collecting dust and need to be bought by everyone.

From their Star Wars property I would be all over buying Dark Forces and Shadows Of The Empire.

From their original IP I would like to have a crack at After Life.

Everything depends on team sizes and expectations. Some devs haven't done well with just Steam sales.

Question is, would they do better without Steam/whatever sales?
All the data we have (FEZ, Dustforce sales figures, Spiderweb's response to Humble Bundle) point to sales being a good thing.

Important to note the amount only includes prior income on the Steam platform, not other platforms like that may suggest. Since the game was released late on PC afaik, it's likely their initial sales were hurt by a staggered release, and benefited more-than-normal from a big sale. I don't disagree 99c sales can really work, but you'll never match a $60 @ 3+ million sales like GTA 5 or Skyrim or whatever new Nintendo game that is selling 2m+ level launch with them.

Perhaps people also do this because they don't feel games quality and content justify prices higher than that.
5€ for a game i play 5-10h is okay, 60€ for the same is not. Or even 20€ is not.

GOG sales helped me bite on the witcher and the witcher 2. I loved them so much I WILL be buying Witcher 3 on launch day.
Sales work sometimes in my case.

I wouldn't have tried the games otherwise because I was so on the fence about them.

The near universal praise from GAF wasn't enough to sway you?

And I know this isn't technically Apogee at all, but Commander Keen 6 has been a fucking white whale for me for my entire life (never found a retail copy of it back in the day) so I'd pay hell of money for that.

My Keen-loving heart breaks for you upon reading this. I actually got retail copies of Commander Keens 4, 5 and 6 when I was a kid (still at my parents' house) as well as legitimate copies of 1, 2, 3 and Dreams (sent away for them, I think the disks were mailed to us in a simple cardboard box). I hope they sell it on GoG at some point so you can have a legit copy. =(

I had Keen 6 as well. Got the boxed copy for my birthday, my old man cracked the sads with the retailer because we couldn't get a refund when we discovered it came on 3.5" disks and all we had was a 5.25" drive. Pretty sure they felt REALLY sad for me because I couldn't play it when I unwrapped it :(

Got there in the end, though! Quite like it. Doubt we'll see it released though because of the publishing thing between (I think) Apogee and Softdisk(?).

I thought I already had overlord on GOG. Well, I own it now.

Keen is with Bethesda, so it's probably not happening.

Why does Beth hate GOG? They're americans, they should love freedom!

Did you see this ridiculous twitter exchange with Bethesda about Fallout being restored to GOG? Some sad shit.

Bethesda Softworks ‏@Bethblog

We’re working to return classic @Fallout games (1, 2, Tactics) to Steam and will provide an update when they’re ready to go.
Sileem Farghaly ‏@SileemFarghaly 2h

@Bethblog @Fallout GOG too plz?
Bethesda Softworks ‏@Bethblog 2h

@SileemFarghaly @Fallout Our priority right now is returning the games to Steam at the earliest date possible
Nin-Joshua Caleb ‏@JoshuaCaleb75 2h

@Bethblog @Fallout what about @gogcom?
Bethesda Softworks ‏@Bethblog 2h

@JoshuaCaleb75 our first priority is bringing them back to Steam. Those that already have the game will not be affected.
Theokritos ‏@Theokritos 2h

@Bethblog @Fallout ... and http://gog.com ?

Better Steam than nowhere, but it is sad to not sell it on GOG too, definitely fits GOG perfectly, and has always been a pretty strong selling title I'd imagine. Oh well. I already have my copies (from around GOG's launch no less I'd bet), and people can just buy it on Steam if they need it at least. Only drawback is if it's got some dumb DRM in it on Steam (unlikely), or requires the Steam client to launch.

I think Bethesda is pissed about gog delivering the collection for free before delisting.

Considering how bad the server was loaded during that day, pretty much everybody has it now. Anyway, the gog version is worth it for the extra alone.

Why? They weren't Bethesda's games at that point. Yes it could mean less sales for them, but if they withhold the games out of spite, they make even less money (i.e. none). Their choice.

Actually, on that note, I'd quite like to see the *other* Overlord; I wonder what happened to the rights to all those Rowan flight sims, 'cause they were rather good.

Yeah, I would like to try those games. I've heard of them before but I have never tried them myself. Apparently they were acquired by Empire Interactive in 2000.

http://www.ign.com/articles/2000/12/13/empire-interactive-acquires-rowan

Empire went under administration in 2009, I wonder who holds the properties now.

Emprie Interactive's IP rights went to a company called New World IP, and then those rights were leased to Zoo Games. Zoo Games is a developer of many, many shovelware titles, and I'm sure they'll continue to sqaunder whatever rights they have in Empire's IP.

That legitimately pissed me off.

To be fair, before all that, the Bethesda Twitter account posted this:

we're not currently a publisher on GOG, which is why it's a little easier returning them to Steam.

It doesn't really excuse the WALL OF ONLY STEAM POSTS, but my guess is either a) Bethesda is in the process of working out a deal with GOG and can't comment, or b) Bethesda said "fuck you" (either now or long ago) to GOG because reasons.

Bethesda's "we're not on GOG, so putting them back on Steam is easier" is just another canned bullshit PR response.

When some of the Atari properties changed publishers/owners this summer, literally the only thing that happened was that the listed publisher on the GOG page for each game changed. That's it.

That's Bethesda's less indifferent-seeming way of saying, "We don't have interest in being on GOG." I guess that's they're choice, but my personal opinion is that the Fallouts are absolute classics which belong there. Fallout was there from day one for GOG.

Is there any chance of Blade Runner ever coming to GOG? I really didn't find much on the subject, so if anyone could help it would be great.

Most likely no, due to various legal licensing issues with the game also being a film property and all that. Westwood games like Lands of Lore and Legend of Kyrandia are on GOG, so at least that is encouraging. I think the Dune games suffer a similar rights setback.

It'll probably be a long process, and maybe evolve at some point (though format change suggestions would be greatly appreciated sooner rather than later), but the link to "Recommended Games" from the OP will contain the collection of games people have recommended over the threads, accompanied by quotes from gaf and graphics, to help someone browse a little more visually instead of just a wall of titles. First up, Outcast:

General idea is to use GOG's banners/thumbnails to keep the graphic work down, pick out ~5 interesting quotes of various lengths/detail from gaf members, give a clickable link to the game itself if you want to see more, and a clickable link to the respective forums with a quick-glance overview of what to expect for mods. Threw in a tiny little platform indicator, to show if it's out on Steam/iOS/PSN/etc, not sure if there's a more relevant platform I left out that should get swapped in.

Hopefully I can add a few a week (maybe even one a day if things are slow), but if nothing else it should pretty up the thread a little. :)

Also, I kinda like the Steam thread's mini GOTY section, so maybe for next year's thread, at the end of this year we can vote on what 2014 GOG releases were the best and have a top 5-10 or so depending on how big the older (and possibly newer) pool of games ends up being.

Isn't Ridley Scott in the process of working on Blade Runner 2?
I mean that probably means nothing but EA has a presence on GOG so if they worked something out it could possibly make it. Though I guess just that in general would be pretty slim if they asked for any sort of fee. The only case scenario would be Hey you can throw that Blade Runner game up we don't care.

I would love this. One of my favorite adventure games.

Woke up this morning to a pleasant surprise; I was apparently one of the winners in the Birthday Crossword contest a few months ago, but GOG mistakenly didn't reveal this (and send out the free $9.99 game codes) until today. Last time I won a code, I got Planescape Torment with it. Now to decide what to get with this one...
Tex Murphy: Under a Killing Moon
Baldur's Gate 2
Icewind Dale

Did anyone else see a Legend of Kyrandia sale in their newsfeed? When I tried to follow the link, it didn't exist :(. Favourite series from my childhood.

*edit* Oh, I see that was yesterday.

*edit2* Oh, I see I already own all three

Another recommended game updated/added to the OP's link, while we wait for the year's first releases, Another World: 20th Anniversary Edition:

n3TAPib.png

It's actually kinda fun picking out the quotes (and sometimes challenging too), I try and balance them out with impressions/concerns/praise/etc, but if there's a better quote for a game or a specific game you'd like to see added sooner rather than way later (which at the going pace might be hundreds of days) let me know. :)

This one gets to have a whole bunch of platform icons lit up, seems you can buy it almost anywhere.

Loved Another World on the Genesis back in the day. Always wanted to play the sequel (Heart of the Alien?) but never got the chance. Is that one available anywhere?

Just Sega CD according to wikipedia, and it's not a true sequel in the sense Another World's designer Éric Chahi refuses to even acknowledge it iirc, and it was made without his approval. Still, it probably would be neat to check out if it were available somewhere.
