Hi guys, next week I'll be in Berlin and will spend a few days there, I'm flying on monday and will return to Spain on thursday. I have a couple of questions:

- My hotel is near the U-Bahn station Wittenbergplatz, what's the fastest way to get there from the Tegel airport?
- Late on monday I'm going to the Tempodron, I think the U1 is direct line to it, but correct me if I'm wrong.
- Tuesday and Wednesday I have the entire day free, so I'm open to recomendations for visits: I was thinking of going to the Bundestag, Brandenburg gate, Holocaust memorial, Alexanderplatz and walking down the Mühlenstraße to see the remainings of the wall, any more recomendations?
- How is the Computerspielemuseum?

Any more general advice will be welcome, transport, food, etc.

Thanks gaf!

I've been in Berlin 2 weeks ago. It's a dump (srs). Ugliest city I've been in.
Stick to the area with the Brandenburger Gate etc. - stay away from the rest.

It'll take you about 90 minutes to get from Tegel to your destination. bahn.de can help you plan.

Try a Currywurst or two. I haven't been to Berlin, but I know that you won't have a problem finding one.

The most common choice for the sausage in the eastern part of germany and especially Berlin is the Bockwurst, personally I prefer a nicely grilled Bratwurst :).

Oh, and if you are into hot/spicy food you'll find that aswell.

Horrible city. Way too big and spread out, ugly, grey and dirty and pretentious as hell. Being German I've seen my share of shitty cities but Berlin takes the cake.

Ugly, dirty, and awesome, more like.

Spend your nights in Kreuzberg with live music. Eat lots and lots of Doner. Look at the graffiti on the Wall. Take a trek up to Teufelsberg.

If you like urban, you will like Berlin. It's ugly, dirty and super diverse for Germany.
What I'm trying to say: it's the only proper city alongside Hamburg in Germany.

Highly recommended:

- Brandenburg Gate
- Museumsinsel (maybe even trip to one of the museums there)
- Volkspark Friedrichshain
- Eat a burger at 'The Bird' in Prenzlauer Berg
- Nightlife in Kreuzberg

Recommended:
- Berlin Wall at East Side Gallery (currently being dismantled)
- Computerspielemuseum
- Holocaust memorial
- Oranienstrasse in Kreuzberg
- Shopping at Hackescher Markt
- Trip to the Teufelsberg
- Friedrichstrasse

Avoid:
- Alexanderplatz
- Kudamm
- Regierungsviertel (besides Bundestag)

For all your transportation needs: bvg.de (can be switched to English)
Buy a 'Wochenkarte' for Berlin AB. It will set you back 28€ for a week of public transportation.

And last but not least: if a woman in a headscarf (often + child) comes up to you and asks: "speak English?" remove yourself from the situation. Just ignore her.

Everything Gustav said^

You also might want to check out this thread. Albeit some of the stuff is dated now.

It's just starting to get warmer here. You chose the right time.

Had an amazing time in Berlin. Go on the far tyre tour, due to the size of the city a bike tour is prefect
Second this, a bike tour in the early evening followed by an entire night wandering aimlessly around the streets with a group of friends is one of my best memories of Germany

eat a döner! or two or ten

and purchase an enormous beer in a glass bottle on the street and drink it there while eating that doner.

my first ever euro city, got to live there just over a month. I LOVED it. been back a few times, but never the same as that first go round.

Beer gardens, lots and lots of beer gardens. Don't do anything else except doner kebabs.

To find connections in Berlin, I think the site of the local public transport company is slighly better than bahn.de:

http://www.fahrinfo-berlin.de/Fahrinfo/bin/query.bin/en?

The bahn.de site is great for getting around in Germany, but if you only need to find connections in and around Berlin, the BVG site is less cluttered and assumes that you are looking for a place in Berlin, so you don't always have to specify that. Both sites are also quite good in figuring out the best connection by simply entering the addresses of your start point and your destination.

If you have an android phone, you could also download Öffi, a nice front end to the BVG site.

As for were to go: everything Gustav said, save for the places to avoid.
Alexanderplatz and the part of Kudamm closest to your hotel were the centers of respectively the east and west parts of the city. If you are a little interested in history, you can really still see the different approaches behind these city centers.
If this stuff does not interest you, both can be skipped.

I would also add a stop at U-Schlesisches Tor, to eat either a Döner at Bagdad or a burger at Burgermeister, or both.

And I see that the thread Fritz linked to has a ton of great information (mostly from Fritz himself).

I plan to go to Berlin in september for the Berlin Festival in Templehof, does anyone knows a good and quite cheap hotel in this area ?

Ok i need clarification on the last bit.

Thanks to all of you for the replies, I was in Berlin for one day ten years ago in a inter-rail trip and found the city amazing, didn't know there are Berlin haters lol

It'll take you about 90 minutes to get from Tegel to your destination. bahn.de can help you plan.

If you want to get around using public transport, use this website.

I was looking to the website, seems like my best option is to catch a bus named TXL at the airport and then the U-9 at Turmstrasse, about 30 minuts, my hotel is near the zoo so I don't think I will have many trouble getting there...

Wow, thanks for the list, I see a few people mentioning going to Kreuzberg, I'll try to.

The last line seems familiar, happens in Spain too :lol Are they just asking for food+money or they are going to get me to a backalley?

eat a döner! or two or ten

What's so special about döners in Germany? I know a lot of turkish live there, it's that good? I was planning a diet of currywurst + 1L beers.

No just money. You will run into them along the main tourist attractions and shopping districts. Really just don't engage them and mind your own business. The worst that could happen is being yelled at.

I don't really know about the döners. They are great but I have hardly anything to compare (well I thought the kebab I had in Istanbul was pretty bland). Anyway, I want you to check all the spanish restaurants and tell me what's good afterwards!

Berlin is phenomenal. I've been here for nearly 4 months now (I've been here studying Uni). Each of its neighborhoods have a distinct feel for it. If you feel like being an American with lots of money to spend? Go to Charlottenburg. If you want a great nightlife, go to Kreuzberg/Friedrichshain. History and memorials? Mitte. The list goes on.

The public transportation is cheap and extremely easy. The best system for a major city I've ever seen. The people are stone-faced, but mind you, they've just gone through the coldest winter in over 100 years ;).

Here is my recommendation list (touristy stuff and local stuff).

-Museuminsel - Go to the Pergamon Museum and Altenationalgallerie. Avoid the Bodes Museum. The rest are worth it but go to the first two.

-Mustafa's - Really good Doner. It is literally outside the entrance for U-bahn Mehringdamm.

-Burgermeister - Best cheeseburgers in town. Literally underneath the traintracks for U-bahn Schlesisches Tor. Maybe a 15-20 minute wait, but they are worth it.

-Topography of Terror - Probably my favorite the most well done out of all the Nazi museums/memorials. It's free and you get to see part of the wall as well. Close to Checkpoint Charlie as well.

-Turkish Market - On Tuesdays and Thursdays, there is a Turkish Market between U-bahn's Kottbusser Tor and Schonleinstrasse. It's pretty good. And cool too.

-Victory Column - Don't be teased by the view from the Panorama Point in Potsdamer Platz. This is a statue in the middle of Tiergarten which gives a great view of Berlin. It has history and you can get a good taste of Tiergarten walking to it.

That's just a few of the things I can think of off the top of my head. Honestly, just walking around in non-touristy places is the best. Non-touristy = Potsdamer Platz, Brandenburger Tor, Friedrichstrasse, basically anywhere in Mitte or Alexanderplatz.

-You can google these, I won't detail them, but here are some really good/cool bars for you to check out:
Mein Haus am See, Dr. Pong, Clash, Oscar Wilde's and Weinerei..

Cafe's are endless. For the best, I suggest Neukolln/Kreuzberg around Kottbusser Tor. That's one of my favorite activities in Berlin to do, find new cafe's to visit.

Honestly, just avoid Alexanderplatz. It's overhyped and tons of people go there.

For nightlife, I suggest getting out at Warschauer Strasse and just find something you like.

Horrible city. Way too big and spread out, ugly, grey and dirty and pretentious as hell. Being German I've seen my share of shitty cities but Berlin takes the cake.

It gives the city flair. Honestly, it isn't even that bad. Neukolln/Kreuzberg/Friedrichshain etc etc are all unique in their own ways.
lol at the berlin haters

edit: also eat a schawarma instead of a döner at least once

I eat at a place near Rathaus Steglitz at least twice a week. Delicious. Schawarma > Doner

No real recommendations but you are lucky, berlin is the shit. Best city in europe.

My man.

-Burgermeister - Best cheeseburgers in town. Literally underneath the traintracks for U-bahn Schlesisches Tor. Maybe a 15-20 minute wait, but they are worth it.

I was not going to argue with other recommendations but the best burger (probably in the world) is served at The Bird. What other dumps serve for steak, The Bird puts through a grinder to make it into burger patties. The taste is ridiculous. Burgermeister is good, but the Bird is king.

Everybody who likes meat and burgers has to try it.

lol, I'm curious about this, what does she do/want?
Money. If you are eating while they approach you the woman or the kid may grab your food. Happened to me twice.

Spreepark!

Oh yeah, desperate, of course. Desperate for what? Don't act butthurt just because someone doesn't like your city.

Why exactly do you feel the need to express your distaste in a thread where someone asks for recommendations going to said city. Really uncalled for.
