Going to concerts alone

What are your thoughts? Still possible to have fun in a seating-oriented venue (as in, not just an open field where you can go anywhere)?

I've been to a few concerts but always with friends, but I really want to go see Bob Dylan in November as I think that'd be super cool, but I don't know a soul who'd want to go as well. I'm just a bit hesitant about not having fun if I'm there alone and having my seat be by some boring, uncool or weird people.

And yes, I know this is a pretty dumb question. If I want to go, I should go, right?

ive been to three shows by myself.

Belle and Sebastion. i had no one to go with. but i said fuck it. it was in a seated theater so it wasnt that bad. it was a little awkward in between bands though.

the other two happened in a weeks span.. just a few weeks ago.

i was walking by this movie theater (that hold shows every once in a while).. and there was a huge line. it turns out it was Rilo Kiley. i had nothing else to do, so i ask around for a ticket and found one at face value.

show was pretty cool.. and i bumped into someone i sorta knew... hung out with her most the time i was there..

the other show was The Mountain Goats. i was supposed to go with the girl i had bumped into at Rilo Kiley.. but she never showed up or gave me a call.

still had an entertaining night. but its definitely a little weird.

People that think it's weird are just too self-conscious. I go to random shows like 2-3 times a week, usually alone unless it's someone known. Don't miss Dylan, either. Excellent live show. And what kind of friends do you have that don't want to see Dylan?

Whenever the band starts playing, it's not like you are talking with your friends anyways.

Same thing with movies. I see movies with my friends, and movies by myself.... But I've always found it weird that it's considered taboo to see a film by yourself, when really all you're doing is sitting in a dark room and staring at a screen.

yeah.. its just the between sets thats a bit odd.. and at the beginning.. before they start. you are just kinda waiting there with nothing to do.

im totally cool with going alone to movies.

Heh, well, some friends like primarily modern harder rock, and other friends who actually kinda like him also happen to be relatively cheap. The latter fellows make it hard to do much of anything that isn't a free or really cheap concoction of fun. So in this case, I'm kind of on my own. Anywho, guess I'll buy a ticket.

i flew to sydney to see nine inch nails by myself.. it was awesome, you can act a bit crazy and not worry so much :D i guess a dylan concert wouldnt quite be the same :p but i'd go

Good lord... if you want to go, go. Who cares if you're by yourself, anyone that points and laughs at you for going alone has a problem; people are gonna be at that concert to see Bob Dylan and probably smoke some pot. Not pay attention to Dan who has no friends to go see Bob Dylan with...

That's what the bar is for! Gin n' tonic 4 life.

That depends on his mood.

I've seen him twice, and both times left me awestruck. However the last time he came around PA, one of my coworkers said his set wasn't quite as good. I couldn't attend then because I had to save up cash to move.

I pretty much always go to shows alone. Works out okay. I'm social enough that I can talk to the people around me, and at the last few shows I went to, ended up making some friends. Not only do I go to them alone, I generally drive 200 miles to go to them alone! That's dedication!!

I just wish that I didn't have to drive so fucking far.

last time was the first time i went to a concert by myself, it was pretty cool actually. none of my friends would enjoy watching indie bands anyway so no point in even asking them.
they did however go to a dylan concert, which i wasnt able to attend. but turns out it was more like an arena event than the rootsy hippie convention they were expecting.

heh, cheers!
nothing quite so awkward like asking the cute bartending chic for a gin n tonic at 2 PM, but what the hell, might as well get in the mood for it.

No, see, I think you missed my question.

I don't give a rat's ass what other people think of me. My question was whether going to a concert alone, without friends, and possibly being seated near people I won't really want to socialize with, would still be fun. I dunno, I go to movies alone all the time, but I think that's more engaging than a huge concert. I just don't want to find myself bored and disengaged if there's no one to chat with. My hesitation has nothing to do with being perceived as a loner or anything, I just was looking for any opinions on whether it's still worth paying $40 if I'm not guaranteed to have any interesting/good social interaction. I mean, I've been to some concerts, and besides my friends, I've been seated near some total nutjobs and I have only so much interest in getting involved with that.

I dunno, maybe my asking just means I'm not hardcore into music.

I've simply found social interaction to play a more significant part of my concert-going experiences than other things, like movies, and was asking from that perspective, not, oh no, I'm an insecure loser who is scared of what others might think.

How do you use a monocle?

Believe it or not, there have been breakthroughs in monocle technology over the past century. . .er, well, not really. I got a non-customized one online. . .if you get them fitted, I've heard they stay in your eye socket with little effort. I kind of have to do this squinty-pinching thing with my brow to get mine to stay in. The lens is glass. I wear contact lenses when I go out with it. If wherever I'm going isn't going to be too nuts, there may also be an accompanying top hat.

Erm, being a glasses wear-er, I find it kind of weird using only one lens. I mean, I thought you would get dizzy trying to see with both eyes. But then you use contact lens with them.

/me am ashamed of noob question

I know some people who only wear one contact lens, I assume thats the modern equivlant (functionality wise) to wearing a monacle. I know one person wears only one contact because he is nearsighted, but when he wars contacts to correct that, he can no longer read things up close. Somehow using only one contact helps correct this. He said he gets used to it, and cant even notice he is only wearing one lens. For glasses wearers, I assume you would just get bifocals.

Course wearing only one contact hardly matches the fashion statement made when one wears a monocle...and top hat.
