ok I havent watched anime in a long long time but when I used to it was often just movies and not some godforsaken 90 episode series (except eva which everyone watched back then)

can anyone reccomend good MOVIES?

Ive seen/own:

Akira (naturally)
Ghost in the Shell (first one)
Armitage (original movie, double helix)
Metropolis
Spirited Away
Princess Monoake (sp?)
Wicked City

are there any other good "movies?"

What about old ones like silent mobius or neo tokyo?

Blackace

Is that the one where
She is dead at the end and he dies in a subway?
if so yeah I saw that and :(
Yeah, it is pretty depressing stuff.
I don't think any other film has sustained that peak of intense despair for longer than this film does.

Why naturally? Because it was one of the first released widely? I recently watched this movie again after nearly 10 years and its mediocre at best. The bike chase scene at the beginning was well done, but the rest was rather insipid.

because I started watching anime back in 93 and it was my first taste of it (the commercials were all over tv).

Rurouni Kenshin - Reminiscence

http://www.animenfo.com/statistic/top.php?type=anime (it lists anime episodes but also anime movies)

I've been meaning to watch it, since I finished watching Rurouni Kenshin till episode ~70 (gets lame after that), but you don't need to watch the Anime series to understand this movie, I think. Nor does it give spoilers to the series (I THINK).

The Cat Returns

Fixed :D

I went to see this today at the Tyneside Cinema, it was the dubbed version and not the subbed version like they'd been advertising on their website but it was still pretty good. The dub has some reasonably well known people like Cary Elwes (Robin Hood Men In Tights, Princess Bride) and Rene Auberjonois (Star Trek DS9) in it, among others.

Well, just about everything Miyazaki is pretty much a given (with special emphasis on Nausicaa, Laputa: Castle in the Sky, and Castle of Cagliostro).

If you want to go a little more obscure, check out the work of the brilliant Makoto Shinkai. His first film, Voices of a Distant Star, is only 30 minutes long, but he did it almost ENTIRELY by himself. Direction, art, animation, sound direction, even voice acting (he and his wife played the two lead roles originally, then they later hired real voice actors to do a redub). The only thing that's really not done by him is the score, which is done by Tenmon. His new film, The Place Promised in Our Early Days (also known as Beyond the Clouds), is a full feature length film which he had a little more help on but is still almost completely his own work in every way. It's a sci-fi film, believe it or not, set in an alternate universe in which Japan remained under American occupation and split in two when the North (Hokkaido to be specific) seceded and revolves around three childhood friends who made a promise to one day visit the mysterious gigantic tower the north has built (which can be seen in the pics below)..

Did I mention it's beautiful?

It comes out on DVD on July 12, and really the artistry of it alone is worth the look (oh, and it's a pretty great movie, too :D).

Yes, Cowboy Bebop: The Movie certainly does rock. Vincent makes a good "villain", and the opening scene alone is worth the price of the DVD.

I've seen Beyond the Clouds...I can't recommend it enough. Miyazaki said he felt it was a failure, but I can't understand why he would say a thing like that. Not only is the art a great thing of beauty as MetatronM has already pointed out, but the story is also wonderful. Just don't expect an action film.

Although the ending is disappointing (seems to just end abruptly), this is one movie where the artwork truly carries itself. You're left wondering how it can look so damn sharp and fluid...and yet it does.

Anything Ghibli. _Anything_

The Ghost in the Shell movies.

The Patlabour movies (same house as the Ghost movies), all 3 of them.

Though most didn't like it, it's very watchable... Steam Boy.

And maybe some old classics, like Armitage, Cyber City Oedo 808 and the Macross Movies. :D

Not to be argumentative but I didn't mind the ending of Beyond the Clouds. Everything was pretty much wrapped up at the end.

I'm a real sucker for good anime art. I keep watching Haibane Renmei for the art alone.

Whisper of the Heart is - I dare to argue - the best movie period, anime or not. Damn you disney bastards for keeping it in limbo!

I'm serious... you feel 'love' when you watch this. You want to make out with the movie, and then cry at the beautiful sunset. ;_;

Yeah, about time they released it. Cat Returns came out first!

More recommendations:

-Ninja Scroll (Classic ninja kickass)
-CASTLE OF CAGLIOSTRO (my personal favorite, early Miyazaki + Luipin)
-Tokyo Godfathers (Good for Christmastime)
-Blood: The Last Vampire (some people knock it, but it's good if you view it expecting half a great movie, in terms of length - 50 minutes)

While I agree that all Ghibli movies are worth seeing. Some are a lot better than others. My favorite Mayazaki must be 'My Neighbour Totoro' and 'Kiki's Delivery Service' while 'Princess Mononoke' and 'Laputa' are very cool, although their pacing are a bit off. The others just don't have as memorable characters for me. Of the realistic style animations, Takahata's Grave of the Fireflies is probably the most impressive, but I also like 'Only Yesterday' and 'Whisper of the Heart', which just feel more relaxed.

For those of you wondering about Whisper of the Heart, the reason it has not been released yet is that Disney was having trouble getting the rights to use the song Country Roads in the English dub and release. It's supposed to come out in Spring '06 though, along with Howl and Totoro. That's from a very good interview here with the heads of Disney's Ghibli localization team.

I thought Beyond the Clouds looked pretty nice, but the story is not so great.

I agree with the Satoshi Kon and Ghibli suggestions. My Neighbor Totoro is my favorite of the Ghibli films. I can also recommend "Memories," a collection of 3 short films.

For anyone interested in seeing some of Miyazaki's works, several Wal*Marts have lowered the price of Spirited Away, Castle in the Sky, and Kiki's Delivery Service to a mere pittance of 14.44. Also, I've seen a few copies of My Neighbor Totoro in several 5.50 bins in Wal*Mart stores across Pennsylvania. Your mileage may vary, but it's worth checking out (Even if it does mean supporting Wal*Mart).

Macross Plus
Porco Rosso
Ninja Scroll (it's an OVA but close enough to a movie)
Read or Die (really awesome OVA. I liked it a lot)

Steamboy (haven't seen it myself, just throwing it out there)

I'll throw in another recommendation for Whisper of the Heart, which is perhaps the most touching film I've ever seen. All of Ghibli's work is head and shoulders above most filmmakers' work, period, let alone other anime studios'.

Urusei Yatsura Movie 2: Beautiful Dreamer is another one to look for, although it helps to know the characters a bit before you see it.

While it's not a movie, Macross Plus is worth picking up when it shows up in a box soon. It's four episodes, and a very well-told story with beautiful animation that was ahead of its time and holds up today. There is actually a "movie" version, but it's just the series with a bunch of interesting stuff cut out of it to make it feature-length.

Finally, if you're up for something in the "truly weird" department, pick up Dead Leaves. Can't really tell you anything about it. You'll just have to watch.

Did Manga ever fix their fuckup with that DVD?

I doubt it, but it is still better than VHS. As long as you watch it on a decent quality DVD player it will be OK. Don't play this one is a shitty Apex!
