Other than Racer X, Yngway Malmstein (incorrect spelling) and Hendrix. Suggest me some some really insane guitar solos.

Check out some Children of Bodom for some kickass dueling guitar/keyboard solos...... and questionable vocals :p

I suggest Downfall, Silent Night Bodom Night, Sixpounder, and Bodom Beach Terror.

Oh great, another "shredder" thread.

Just to spite all the people who are gonna say people who play a million notes a minute, I'm going to nominate "The Fly" and "Love Is Blindness" by U2. (I listened to Achtung Baby the other day and was reminded about how frickin' brilliant it STILL is after all these years.)

Well, there are a million good ones, but one underappreciated one is

Berton Averre's solo in The Knack's "My Sharona"

It's passed over from a lot of lists because the song has a cheesy image, but that solo (in the non-radio edit version) is one of the best of all time. ROCKS!

Hm. I detect a bit of mean-ness in that post. Fuck you.

But thanks for the suggestions.

In Flames - The Hive [my favorite, ever]
The Cars - Tonight She Comes [not really insane, but I was just listening to it now, and damn it's awesome, especially for The Cars]
Metallica - Welcome Home (Sanitarium)
Sum 41 - The Bitter End [damn, check this song out, it's pure thrash! ...even though it sounds really close to Metallica's "Battery" in places]
Helloween - The Tune

Anything by Stevie Ray Vaughan.

Indeed. My Mom got me into him. :p

Steve Vai kicks ass too. You guys should all get Steve Vai's version of Beetoven's 5th.

Once again, thanks for all the suggestions.

Queen of Denmark
Cooter: Stevie Ray is a great blues guitarist, but all of his solos sound redundant to me, sort of like Clapton.

Good guitar solo: Jimmy Page's solo in "Since I've Been Loving You" by Led Zeppelin (the BBC Sessions version is best, though the studio cut is damn good as well). Just incredible.

EDIT: God damn, I can't believe I didn't mention Steve Vai. ANYTHING by him.

Oh, I know about that one. I listed Zeppelin's BBC Sessions as my most listened too album ever in that thread.

Hey, fuck you back! ;)

All kidding aside, when these types of threads get posted, it usually degenerates into two warring camps: those who admire sheer technical skill, and those who admire "feeling." (Since you name-dropped Malmsteen, I'm guessing that you're looking for stuff which is challenging to play.) I suppose it's possible to have both, but it's very rare to merge the two, and at least in my experience, I don't care for any of the songs that Malmsteen, Satriani, Vai, etc. ever wrote. Your mileage may vary.

How is this a "shredder" thread. Are you making an assumption based off of songs you haven't heard and thusly acting like an elitist to prop yourself in some way above the other posters in this thread? If so it isn't working.

Petrucci owns you.

I'm surprised only one dream theater mention.

Anyway, some of my personal fav's are (though not necessarily petrucci's craziest...but probably best composed.

Dream Theater - Home
Dream Theater - Lie (the last one..the first one is pretty wild though, tough to get cleanly)
Dream Theater - The great debate
Dream Theater - Fatal Tragedy (has one of the most sickly fast arrpegios i've ever heard in it)

If you're just looking for a straight up picking exercize, then As I am has a great one.

As far as well composed solo's go, I'll re-nominate Home and Lie, and also add "Second Love" by Pain of Salvation, the live solo from Dream Theater's Hollow years, and the opening solo for Dream Theater's Hell's Kitchen, and the solo for Dream Theater's Line's in the Sand (one of petrucci's most perfectly composed solo's, imo).

Oh yea, and Another Day, that's got a real great guitar solo.

And Another Dimension by Liquid Tension Experiment(also John Petrucci on guitar). The first solo in that is just great, almost a latin vibe to it.

I know what you mean. But, seriously, Vai. Is fucking insane. :p

U2 is a pretty good band. I have every CD of their's burned. (A friend gave them to me randomly) and Joshua Tree is the only one I like. Which CDs are those on, as I couldn't name a U2 song if my life depended on it.

Edit: I take that back. I can name "Beautiful Day" since it was played on the radio so much.

My favourite guitar solos/leads

Already mentioned; U2 - The Fly - even better live!

Faith No More - Epic (goan Big Jim!)
Soundgarden - Black Hole Sun
Mudhoney - Touch Me I'm Sick
Megadeth - Hangar 18 (simply fuckin awesome) & Take No Prisoners (Hell all of Rust In Peace!)
BB King - Lucille, but really any of his songs - the tone!

and my all time favourite guitar lead :-

The Kinks - You Really Got Me (picked up the guitar cos of this song!)

From the last thread, some good ones I remember were Zeppelin's White Summer and Achilles' Last Stand, Funkadelic's Maggot Brain, and Pink Floyd's Comfortably Numb. I'm going to recommend Television's Marquee Moon and Neil Young's Like a Hurricane.

Thanks.

But now I'm posting on a different note. I figured it'd be easier to mention it here then create another thread. I can't remember the name of this Iron Maiden song.

It goes something like this...

You take my life and I'm gonna take yours to, you have a musket but I'll run ya through...

Or something. Obviously I've got something wrong because when I google it nothing comes up. Anyone know?

Some others :-

Prong - Take it in Hand (Tommy Victor is the king of artificial harmonics)
Smashing Pumpkims - Soma (sublime)
The Eagles - Hotel California
Led Zeppelin - Whole Lotta Love
Pearl Jam - Alive
Ride - Leave them All Behind

Hotel California kicks all sorts of ass. It's the guy from the Darkness' favorite solo too. :p

So far I've got most of them and the only one I don't really enjoy is the SoundGarden one. Mostly because I hate them. For the record.

I'm partial myself towards Gilmour's solo in Comfortably Numb, the Pulse version.

Other solos which I think kick ass are the one by Malkian in Soil (SoaD) and Hammett/Hetfield's solo in Fade to Black

You ever watch the Lost '94 Tapes (Vieuphoria DVD)? B0lly sounds like he's from another planet when he plays the Soma solo. You gotta see it. Geek USA (especially live in some cases, i.e. Lost 94 Tapes) and Starla are also great Corgan solos.

What about Joe Satriani?

I can't think of any outstanding Solo's right now. I'll come back in a bit ;-)

Alright, thought of some:

Rush - La Villa Strangiato
Rush - 2112: Discovery
Yes - The Clap

Will return with more ;-)

Michael Angelo - No Boundaries

I think you can say that the whole song is one solo ;)

What this man said. It's by far the most insane shred solo ever!

There is a distinct lack of shred in this thread, allow me to compensate :)

Tony MacAlpine - Tears of Sahara
Paul Gilbert - Gilberto Concerto
Cacophony - Speed Metal Symphony
Any G3 live stuff
Marty Friedman - Forbidden City
Jason Becker - Perpetual Burn
Avantasia - Reach out for the light
Extreme - Play with me
Joey Tafolla - Plastic
Steve Vai - Eugene's Trick Bag
Steve Vai - Final Guitar Solo
Helloween - Midnight Sun
Axel Rudi Pell - Pay the Price
Impellitteri - Beware of the Devil

If you need anymore, just look up any artist on Shrapnel records.

Please don't lump Joe Satriani in with those guys or the rest of the "shredder" crew. He's a much more accomplished songwriter and stands head & shoulders above the rest of the guitar virtuoso crowd.

AlphaSnake

...and that, kids, was the first time I sucked a dick for crack
Iron Maiden - Killers (best Maiden solo evar!)
Iron Maiden - Flight of the Icarus (who said you can't mix feeling and shredding in one solo? Piss off!)
Iron Maiden - Run to the Hills
Iron Maiden - The Trooper

Etc. etc. etc.

When it comes to solos, I firmly stand by the belief that Maiden whips every metal act, including Sabbath, including Metallica. Their solos are downright perfect, no other metal band can compare. Adrian, Janick and especially Dave write their solos with classical music in mind. All of their solos, unlike many other mainstream metal bands, are heavily influenced by classical music, and that's what makes their solos hands down the best.

And once again, a thread is greeted by -Jinx-'s over-generalizing presence. Some thing's never change. Instead of just stating a coment, Jinx takes the pre-emptive stance for no apparent reason.

I agree. Maiden is quite possibly the best. Ever.

Check out the solo to "The Prisoner", also. Metallica ripped off several riffs from that song and a couple others on the Number Of The Beast album, most notably "Children Of The Damned."

UP THE IRONS

Oh, come now. You're just bitter that I destroyed your "Business 101" lesson in the Gaming Forum.

HOLY SHIT

I forgot about this one. You HAVE to listen to the solo in Helloween's "Hell Was Made In Heaven." Starts at the 2:49 mark.

IAWTP. Steve Vai and Michael Angelo may be technically better, but Satriani has much better songs.
