Please don't lump Joe Satriani in with those guys or the rest of the "shredder" crew. He's a much more accomplished songwriter and stands head & shoulders above the rest of the guitar virtuoso crowd.

Teddman is correct

Satriani is still no shawn lane, but hes still very respectable. Hes the only musician of the previously mentioned "shredders" that ever trys anything different. (jason becker excluded, he was awesome when he could play)

Judas Priest - Beyond the Realms of Death, Some Heads are Gonna Roll, You Got Another Thing Comin', Touch of Evil. There are some others that are great as well.

I have to second the Randy Rhoads advice, too. Also, Joe Satriani - Midnight (try to find the video, pretty impressive 2-handed tapping, and I happen to really like the melody).

For the record, I DO think Satriani's songwriting is quite different than a lot of the people mentioned in this thread. I don't care for them, but I do recognize that he's trying to do some stuff differently.

Satch and Vai are both second generation Van Halen influenced blues based guitarists. You anti shred folks seem to lump anyone who plays fast in the shred genre, where anyone who has played a guitar will tell you there's a clear difference between the neo classical (yngwie, becker, etc), blues (EVH, satch, vai) and jazz (lane, henderson) sub genres. Research before you post!
Look, with me, it's very simple: They are ALL in the subgenre of I-don't-like-their-music. Any further distinction is pretty useless, as far as I'm concerned.

I honestly did NOT want this thread to get sidetracked. The original poster asked about my response, and I responded. I don't particularly care to get into it -- go talk guitar, be happy, etc.

Oh, come now. You're just bitter that I destroyed your "Business 101" lesson in the Gaming Forum.

I didn't even know you made a reply there. I lost sight of that thread after my last reply. Making extremely long replies on my absurdly slow cable connection forced me to bow out of that bout. I'll bring the thread back shortly when it doesn't feel like I'm using a 28.8 modem.

Brian May - I Want to Break Free

say what you want about Queen, but Brian May has got one of the most identifiable guitar styles, and the sound on that song... sweet

Frank Zappa > *, listen to anything off his "Guitar" series for proof.

Yes he's a satrical artist but goddamn, that man was an absolute motherfuckin' genius on the guitar.

indeed.

although i like to lump them in the categories "no talent assclowns" (yngwie, michael angelo) respectable (satch, eric johnson, sometimes vai) and fucking awesome (holdsworth, lane)

"Buckingham Green" by Ween. The fucking solo is amazing. Deaner is quite possibly the most underrated guitarist around. So good, so good. For something a bit different, try to get a live version of "I'll Be Your Johnny On the Spot" or "Reggaejunkiejew." Those solos live are something else (I think I sat there slack jawed, with my mouth drooped open when I saw "Reggaejunkiejew" live).
