Good intuitive movie maker?

So one of the projects for my class is to make a scary movie.

It's a little rough around the edges, but with the right effects it might at least be halfway decent.

I'm looking for suggestions for a good intuitive movie making program to help me edit, process, and add effects.

Argh...Windows Movie Maker is fine, but it always crashes...

Premiere is nice but it's daunting and when I tried to use it before it was frustrating cause I didnt' know what to do.

Suggestions? :(

There isn't some kind of tutorial? I used premiere like, back in high school...
Wasn't that bad.
 
I'm a Final Cut Pro man myself, but I don't suppose you would want to use a Mac or pay very much. I've never used it, but I think Avid has a Free DV program you can download from their site, I guess it would be entry level and there are tutorials you can download as well.
