Okay - getting a PS2 game as a present for a friend. I don't really play PS2 games, so can anyone recommend any good multiplayer PS2 games?

Off the top of my head Winning Eleven (my friends aren't soccer or sports game fans, but they all love it, supports up to 8 players, though it's awesome with 4) and Smackdown vs. Raw 2006 (just typical fun multiplayer wrestling game). Unfortunately, PS2 is by far the worst console this gen for multiplayer games (especially party games if that's what you're looking for). I second the Baldur's Gate recommendation though if you're looking for a great co-op you can play for ~25-30 hours.

Burnout 3 is a pretty good one. I assume the same for Revenge. For fighting games I'd also throw in Tekken Tag Tournament. I second Champions of Norrath and one of the Smackdown games (preferably Here Comes The Pain or the newest one vs. Raw 2006).

Only other recommendations are a bit more peripheral gimmicky. Namely EyeToy Play 1 and 2 as well as Guitar Hero (bit pricey for that one).

Ratchet Deadlocked. It has an awesome co-op mode and great off-line and online multiplayer. Can't go wrong with that one.

And of course Guitar Hero, if you can afford the 2nd controller.

Super Monkey Ball Deluxe - Lots of multiplayer party games.
Mashed - Insane overhead view Car racing like MicroMachines, 4 players.
Timesplitters 3 - Crap in single player, best 4 player FPS on the PS2, good 2 player co-op story mode.
Everything or Nothing: James Bond - Cool 2 player co-op mode, dodgy 4 player fighting.
Rachet & Clank 3 - 4 player, 3rd person combat.
The Bouncer - cool 4 player fighting, you need to unlock everything first.
Eyetoy Play 2 - Great multiplayer party games.
Lego Star Wars - 2 player co-op story mode.
Smash Court Tennis 2 - Best tennis game on the PS2, 4 players.
Twisted Metal:Black - 4 player car combat.
War of the Monsters - Interesting take on 2 player beat 'em up.
Onimusha Blade Warriors - Pretty good 4 player fighting.
LOTR: Return of the King - 2 player co-op story mode.
The Stuntman - This works well as a take turns party game.
Kuri Kuri Mix - 4 player co-op puzzler.
Everybody's Golf 4 - 4 Player golf.

I would 2nd the recommendations for Champions of Norrath (4 player story co-op) and Athens 2004 (multiplayer).
