Good "spectator" game suggestions

My wife came in when I started MGS 3 and sat down became enthralled with the story and demanded that I not play the game without her. I played and she watched the story until we finished it. She thoroughly enjoyed it. After that she wanted to play another game together. Trying to think of a game that would have enough story well enough paced I popped in FFX and she loved that to death. Now we finished that two days ago, and she wants to know what's next. She asked about FFX-2 and I just sort of laughed and showed her the intro and she said, "Ok, well then what else?"

So what is a good game that would be fun to watch? Keep in mind she doesn't much care for blood, guts and violence, but is a sucker for a really good story. I'd prefer if it had voice acting that way we don't have to deal with all the reading. I thought of MGS 1, which I think she would enjoy, but then she'll want to see what happens in MGS 2, and I don't know if I could try to even explain that. Though she likes some sci-fi I don't think she'd enjoy Xenosaga, and even if she did I don't think I'd like to play it again. Any suggestions?

My wife and uncle would not let me play RE4 the game unless they were both home and able to watch.

They REALLY got into it too. Screaming at me and everything. It was gripping for them, and they didn't ever lay hands on the controller.

RE4, for me, is the best game EVER.

My wife actually does that to me here and there. I will start a game and if she catches it and thinks its cool - she won't let me play it without her being there to watch. She did that with Metroid Prime, Silent Hill 2, and quite a few other games - but at the moment I am drawing a blank.

RE4 would be way overkill on the blood & guts though. Have you thought about the Fatal Frame/Project Zero series? Does she mind horror games?

EDIT: Speaking of horror series, I guess Silent Hill 2 has a great story? I've never played it though... :lol

Or maybe the Shadow Hearts games?

Depends on the girl I would think. My wife loved it.

Heh...Exaclty the same as my girlfriend. I would find myself reloading at dangerous times or purposely unloading the clip to make more of those close call moments and increase tension.

Funny thing is she HATES horror movies.

Horror games really do make great spectator games. I had way more fun watching RE4 than playing it. :P

I'd suggest Ico too. Exploration is pretty linear, the aesthetic is fantastic and the concept is universally sentimental. My sister loved watching me play it.

my girl loved watching Re remake even more then 4.

Damn fixed camera angles.

That jarred my memory though. She wouldn't let me play the GC remake of Resident Evil without her either. She got far more enjoyment, from what I could tell though, out of RE4.

I think that's pretty slim MGS2 reasoning, but at least you have enough sense not to play Xenosaga again. Off the top of my head, games I would recommend:

First off: Shadow of Destiny

Other games: Ace Combat 5 is something I would hesitantly recommend; sure, it's basically just flying around and blowing shit up, but every mission is packed with voiceovers and there are cutscenes and/or video briefings bookending every mission. Gitaroo Man is another maybe - it's fun, it's silly, it's voiced, and there are bizarre cutscenes, but admittedly it's not a very long game. ICO might work, although it's quiet obviously.

I'm sure there are other good examples, but I'm drawing blanks here...

I think you should go ahead with MGS1 and MGS2. MGS3 kinda offsets a few "WTF" moments in MGS2. A quick glance at my shelf, you should also try Zone of the Enders 2, DMC3, and maybe Onimusha 3 (though, I haven't played Oni3). DMC3 is kinda iffy, too, if she's not big on (as my girlfriend so eloquently puts it) the smashies. Kojima storytelling is kinda difficult to top. :\

Kingdom Hearts is a good one. They'll think it's really cute.
He said she was into the story though. Show her a picture of Mickey Mouse, a picture of Cloud Strife and then tell her that 'within the darkness, there is light' and she'll pretty much have the whole game sussed.

I haven't gotten my wife to watch it (she is way too busy leveling up in WoW), but I would think Psychonauts would be a good game to watch. Tons of funny stuff and the story is cool.

I had an audience for most of the time I played Ocarina of Time. Not too many cut scenes really, but the non-gamers still found it interesting.

I dunno, I think the pacing in stuff like Star Ocean or Kingdom Hearts or Zelda is too slow for them to be really good spectator games. Too much focus on aimless exploration or repetitive leveling up.... more linear games like Resident Evil, Ico or Metal Gear Solid are much more engaging to watch I think.

Beyond Good and Evil is nice to watch, but won't leave her guessing on the story much. If you can stomach the subpar but servicable gameplay, X-Files: Resist or Serve is another pick.

BG&E bored me to tears. Especially the so called "stealth" levels. I finally gave up on it. The game just wasn't it was all hyped to be.

How about some of those Point & Click Xbox games like Syberia, Myst & Still Life?

Monkey Island on PS2 would be another good choice!

Shenmue 1/2 are great games for this I'd say.

I agree, if only the voice acting were not so bad. Shenmue 2 is intriguing, expecially when you start hanging out with Wren and go to kowloon.

RE4 is great spectator material ---- it may be bloody and visceral, but it really draws spectators in more inocently ..... + there's just a really good sense/stress that you're in danger, I think she'll be all for it once those first attacks come.

Shadow of Collossus is gonna be great for spectators --- the mechanics of the game are so dramatic, and the simple ICO-like storytelling should be great.

Pikmin 2 is also a good one for spectators --- the puzzles will probobly give her more interaction ... and having to face the fact that most of your little bastards are gonna die is great :lol

Wow. Lots of RE4. I might have to try it out. KH she saw parts when I played that with my daughter. Star Ocean 3 and Shadow Hearts I'm intrigued by because those were on my possible pick up for me list. But are they really that good at being spectator games?
