Google Drive app for PC and Mac is being shut down in March, new app taking its place

The aging Google Drive app for desktop is officially deprecated as of today, Google announced in a blog post. Support will be cut off on December 11th and the app will shut down completely on March 12th, 2018. Users who are still running the Drive app will start seeing notifications in October that it’s “going away,” and the company will steer customers towards one of two replacements depending on whether they’re a consumer or business user. Google Drive the service isn’t going anywhere. You can still access it from the web, smartphone apps, and either of the software options mentioned below.

Google now has two fairly new software tools for backing up your data and/or accessing files in the cloud. There’s Backup and Sync, the all-encompassing consumer app that replaces both the standalone Google Drive and Google Photos Uploader apps. It offers essentially the same functionality as Drive and works much the same way.

And on the enterprise side, Google has rolled out Drive File Streamer, which saves space on your local drive while providing access to “all of your Google Drive files on demand, directly from your computer.” It’s a much more elegant and integrated approach. “Say goodbye to time-consuming file syncing and any concerns about disk space,” Google says of the benefits that Drive File Streamer introduces

I've never had issues with the Google Drive app on my Macbook Pro. It's simple and easy to understand that is just connected to the Finder to drag and drop files in.

Even when I worked at Google we would joke "That's deprecated -- and the replacement isn't ready yet." Pretty much how they do everything, even internally.

I look forward to them killing the replacements in another year or two and replacing them with something else, too.

I mean, okay? This is basically an improvement to the old app. The new one is just as lightweight, never bothers you, but has a better UI and more features. Its literally a software upgrade.

None of that changes with this. Its called Backup and Sync and it works the same way.

I didnt even know there was a google drive app. Ive been using backup and sync. Very useful since starting school.

AFAIK Backup and Sync is the new one they are talking about here. Its usable now, and the old old old version before Backup and Sync is just going away because its been upgraded and renamed.

This is literally nothing like Hangouts. No idea why thats being thrown around.

Backup and Sync is the *new* Google Drive. The current Google Drive download page actually takes you to B&S even though the URL is still /drive. I expect Filestream to be their primary app moving forward, though. It's certainly more forward thinking and seems like a natural evolution for Cloud Storage.

Did they ever fix the backup and sync app to work with network drives? They made Google Photos use that now but took away network drive access which kills the usefulness of it.

I just want to access my cloud drive files without them taking up space on my 256gb macbook pro.

Move the files to your Drive synced folder? Does it work that way on mac? It appears as a normal folder on Windows called Drive. I can move stuff to it as if it were a local folder.

I'm reading that as Mammoth wants to sync files with Drive without having to keep those files on the computer. Cloud only storage.

Gattsu got it right; one of the problems with these cloud services is that having a folder that syncs to your hard drive means instead of a magic drive that is connected to all of your devices, it's just a bunch of files on-device that happen to be sync'd between all devices. There's a small distinction there where the former means the only limitation is how much space you're allowed to have on service, whereas the latter you're also limited by how much space is on each device.

The newest client (not Backup and Sync) is entirely this--you install it, log in, and there isn't any UI or anything, you just have a new drive attached to your computer that contains your Google Drive files. Opening anything on the drive fetches it from the cloud, and the cache is cleared after a while. It's pretty amazing, but dunno if it works for normal accounts--it seems to be only for GSuite accounts.

Yeah, doesn't work for my normal account. Must be Google Suite only.

I upgraded to the new version a month or two ago. Works great, let's me sync folders outside of my Drive folder which I've wanted for years.

In the past I had to make symlinks which was messy, didn't work right, and would usually fuck up on Windows. Now I can backup specific folders within client projects without having to make duplicates or break my file system organization.

Was a big upgrade and I've been happy with it. I'm not a commerical / Enterprise, just normal acct. There's also a rumor floating around that the new Pixel 2will come with unlimited drive storage like how the OG pixel opted you into unlimited photo storage.

honestly gets really annoying that instead of upgrading apps they just off them for a new version that does the same or some of the same things.

I think many people just want a way to mount Google Drive as a system drive and be able to just read/write from the server directly that way.

So far that I see there are ways to do this but pretty much all the software is something you have to pay for.

Apparently there is this: https://github.com/viciousviper/DokanCloudFS

But there might be some speed issues with that.

Guys, you can disable certain folders from syncing with your computer.

Boom, hard disk space saved.

I have a massive TV Show collection on my Drive because having to put DVDs into my desktop every time I want to rewatch a specific episode of a show is such a massive pain and I don't even have a DVD drive on my Surface. It's big enough that the entirety doesn't fit on my Surface, and would take up tons of space on my desktop. If I turn off that folder I don't get access to those videos.

With their new solution whenever I watch a show there's a minute of it fetching the video file and boom I get to watch anything I want after a short delay.

I used another program based on the same framework (Dokany) for my Amazon Drive back when they offered unlimited space. It was really buggy and broke all the time.

I then tried some paid solutions, and they all basically work the same with slight pros and cons. Google's new solution is free and works better than any of those solutions.

Google currently does not have a solution that is free and works with a normal account.

Agreed... although in my case, I got a notification in the app that said "Google Drive is now Google Backup and Sync, click here to install the new client," and it basically did everything for me.

It was about as seamless as updating.

I *suspect* because it has full access to your file system for you to sync whatever you want, it might need system level permissions which requires a totally new app. The features were definitely worth it for me.

Adding Google Drive to the Windows Navigation Pane

I set my computer up with these a while back and it works with the new software. Shows up as a drive on my navigation pane and all I have to do is drag and drop.

Oh nice, I hadn't realized that they had improved it in that way.

Now you've given me ideas...

But is that the same as what I was describing? All the content resides on Google's Server and you access it remotely while not having it being synced with a local directory?

i.e. let's say you have a folder in Google Drive that has 4 documents in it. Can you mount that Google drive and only have those documents be in the Google Drive without it syncing with a local folder on your hard drive as well?

You quoted me, I responded. Problem?

Requires paid Google Suite, no?

Edit: (Do people have a mental block with the word free?)

I mean, if you made that clear in the initial post that you were looking for a free solution that didn't require GSuite and not been combative when people told you about the client that this thread is about, maybe less people would be quoting you?

You found all my other posts but not the first one?

I was trying to point out how you were acting standoffish to people who replied to you, but even then your first post doesn't mention anything about needing a free client for free accounts, to the point where you are rude to those who offer superior solutions if you're willing to pay even a little.

How much is the Google Suite? Or is it only for business? I'm guessing I don't get that with my $2/month 100 GB Drive plan...

Just get Plex.

What do you want it for? Most of its services are free for consumers.

I have Plex (and Plex Pass) but the Cloud Server is incredibly buggy. Whenever I try to watch something I almost always end up spending more time futzing with the server getting it to work than I do watching the video.

At least they are waiting until most schools are nearing the end of the school year. Still around finals time, so fucked up a bit.
