I care for it because driving fucking sucks. I'd rather have my car display a hundred ads to me if I don't have to physically take the wheel during your average rush hour in DC.

I like driving but I don't live in an area with shitty traffic so that probably changes my opinion. I like being in control.

Moreover there have been roadside billboards for over a century. There have ads on the radio for decades. Bumper stickers, ads on trucks and commercial vehicles etc The driving experience was already full of advertising before Google started dreaming of self driving cars...

Yeah there is already adverts prevalent when I drive, some which I can avoid and some I cannot. That doesn't mean I have to accept more advertsing from somebody else when I am out.

Well I guess that's just more devices that Pachter can yell at people for avoiding ads on, lol. Adblock is going to be on everything at this pace.

Google is trying to do three things:

1- Mine data from anything imaginable.
2- Process said data through machine-learning to be able to extrapolate nearly unlimited conclusions from said data.
3- Project data back to everyone, anywhere at anytime possible.

That's the three objectives around which everything they do revolves around of, be it self-driven cars, smart homes, wearables, etc. For example, the self-driven car project is NOT about making self-driven cars but rather about turning all vehicles into information gathering drones and information communicating devices. You might not have their phone, but you'll be sitting in a car that is either providing them information or doing so and projecting data back to you. Heck, even when no one is in it it would still service them; it has to constantly film its surrounding 24/7.

It's never about "winning" at making a new product, it's all about transforming what is already there into Google-servicing mechanisms. Google will probably not be making its own cars, they'll just nudge the world in that direction, then maybe buy some self-driven cab company. But it's not about products, it's about the world, creating a new data ecosystem.

So is this gonna be a real thing or just a dumb excuse to not disclose financial information that their competitors already do disclose?

ads aren't so bad, if my refridgerator suggested things for me to buy based on my previous purchases and current refridgerator contents then I think that'd be a good improvement to my refridgerator experience

What exactly do people think this implies?

That you'll have ads popping up randomly on the device?

Or that you'll have access to a google service which will include as with all other google services, ads as part of that service?

Do a google search on your watch? Get links, get ads.

Watch youtube on your fridge? Watch a video, watch an ad.

To be mad at this, you'd have to be mad at the way google services work now.

Sounds like an attempt to expand their ad market and thus revenue. Makes perfect sense from a business standpoint to start targeting other areas that have yet to receive targeted ads from a business.

The bigger question is how. No one is going to buy a fridge that makes you watch an ad or even use the feature all that much if it's filled with ads. They would have to bring some very interesting products to market that cannot be found elsewhere, or offer a steep discount for the product.

The latter would be interesting. It seemed to work for Amazon, why not try it with thermostats and other in-home devices?

Due to your internet browsing history, your refrigerator has recommended the following items for you:

Cream pie
Sandwich
Packed fudge
Tossed salad
Sloppy Joe
Tuna

Yeah, sure plenty would be. But what about local specials for fresh produce, or fish. Or local delivery deals? Some ads can be useful.

Hell, it could help me use those receipt coupons that they give out, that I never use. It is usually stuff I would buy, but I dont use them since they are paper and turn into junk.

In any case, its just one part of automation systems.

Those don't have to be ads forced on you. Ideally, it could give you a list of locations close to you that have whatever item you are low on with prices listed instead of just showing you whichever location paid money to push ads on you.

About time, I have enough trouble as it is coming to my own decision about what aspirin or soda I want to buy.

could be interesting if it's tied to price. I could see something like:
Refridgerator $799,
Refridgerator enhanced with Google $779
Fixed for the Amazon method for this. :p

But seriously, I wouldn't be opposed to buying a product like this if it helped reduce product enough. Maybe

The car one seems werid. My gps nags me every time i use it about a disclaimer, would the ads work like that, you must agree not to sue us to see an ad?

If the screen on the fridge isn't critical to use, one could just agree blah blah, met the minimal requirements for the rebate, and disconnect it from the internet, unless of course its running android, then just root it and be ad free. Id imainge it have some sort of internal camera, refering coupons for things you buy as well as marketing research.

These are solutions to non problems imo. Glasses makes the most sence. Everything else seems iffy.
