Google unveils Android Wear: a version of Android for smartwatches

Guess it will largely depend on how good the voice recognition is. Doesn't seem like you could type a reply in a traditional way.

android is an open system and i am sure stuff like minuum keyboard would be ported over

People are so sure that this is the same scenario as with smartphones, tablets, etc. "A happened, B too, so C will, Luddite!". Time will tell.

Also, Apple is in no way obligated to get in this "race". Not sure why people assume that. Strikes me as cheercorporatism.

This is very exciting & Google's vision with Google Now is becoming more clear as the weeks pass. I own a Google Glass and plan to return it today- Android Wear seems much more practical for the majority of people, even though I definitely recognize the value of Glass for certain groups.

I don't think Apple will really be able to compete in the smart watch market given Google Now- they just don't have access to the same kind of relevant data & integration.

The Moto looks great much better than the Samsung watch. Will be interesting to see what kind of battery life it gets. I'm on iOS so will wait to see what apple shows off.

so uh:

Moto is lookin' good

Shiiiit! It's happening! I love the idea of smart watches, but none of them to date have seem to have been able to nail the tech down to a level I'd be happy with (at least for the price). This is a big step in the right direction.

As for "Why not use my phone?". I think the vid in the OP has pretty good examples of how it's more convenient than actually pulling your phone out of your pocket.

If the screen turns off at all, then forget it, I need the display to be on at all times, if I have to shake my wrist, or tap it or anything, its useless.

My hope is that they use Mirasol (Color e-Paper), we will see.

Also, love my Pebble, it can do almost anything you want but it requires tons of tinkering with different programs, Google's seem to be more plug and play, which is good.

Man that Moto 360 is sexy as all hell. Best looking smart watch yet, keeping my eye on that thing.

Really is the year of the wearables. I might skip out on a phone upgrade and jump on a watch instead this year.

Lifting your wrist up will probably be enough to wake it.

The UI/UX looks alot like google glass, which is pretty great to use.

Why the fuck is people's obsessed with weather apps?

Pansies. Our ancestors looked at the sky to see how the weather was gonna be for the rest of the day, not a fucking watch on your wrist.
Can you tell how hot is outside by looking at it?

Apple can just watch the fight then make their own "innovative" watch.

It's going to be all voice delivering text, no keyboard whatsoever on it. 100% certain

I think while the value of watches is still up for debate, the more important part about this announcement is a wearable sdk. From the looks of it, this won't necessarily be a catch all sdk, as the first category announced is watches.

I'm assuming they'll be adding support for different wearable tech as time progresses. Potentially even wearables without screens - I wouldn't mind a smart ring, if they get small enough.

Why do I have the feeling these wearable smartphones will just be the new watch calculator? I just don't see these things taking off outside of a small group of geeks and technophiles that don't mind the gaudiness.

That Moto watch is still too huge, but at least it's progress in smartwatch aesthetics.

Google Now does seem like the perfect integration for a watch

I wonder if we will get people repeat this for every new wearable tech out there. I feel live I've heard this 100x already. All of these techs are still in their infancy so it's hard to give it a proper judgement. No one thought smartphones or tablets would take off like they did when microsoft came out with them initially.

A metric fuck ton of non geeks already own a wearable ie a Fitbit or Nike or Jawbone device to fitness tracking.

These devices would just do that and more.

So you have the fitties, techies, who else? Do you see sedentary granny getting something like this, as opposed to an iphone (or any other sp) that she already owns?

I don't really classify sport watches the same. Function has always trumped form for those. I'm not going to wear a watch with a digital display, plastic band, that's water resistant and remembers my laptime for up to 20 laps in a casual setting with normal clothes on.

Chances of these working with an iOS app like Glass does? Seems like Apple's watch is still pretty far off.

It's probably just going to run off Google Now, which I'm assuming will need to be enabled on your phone and will just send the data via bluetooth.

Wow this smartwatch stuff happened relatively fast.

I wonder how they will incorporate designs, fashions etc. A lot of people may be hesitant if they look to "techy" or "robotic", while if they can seamlessly be incorporated into your wardrobe it would be really cool. Perhaps removable straps, from cheap to expensive.

Apple's really falling behind here. What are they going to unveil in six months time that is going to blow these products away?

Methinks they waited to long and the secrecy stuff might finally backfire.

Between these and the Galaxy Fit the iWatch is going to have a hard time standing out.

Rewind to 2006 with Smartphones.

Apple will probably do better with fitness functions and they'll neatly integrate their devices with all othe Apple devices and services. But they cannot do Google Now.

Technically they could, since GN is available on IOS. But they probably won't - pride, etc.

I also think Apple's smartwatch will have a more fitness-oriented approach, not including functionality relating to many of the things that Google Now can provide.

Google Now on iOS does't have the same notification functionality & OS integration that the Android version boasts. I rarely used it on my iPhone 5 because it felt gimped.

I hated the designs from all the smartwatches out there, but the Moto 360 .. wow, would buy! Last time I used a watch was 15 years ago :o

You can't fall behind in a category you're not even apart of. Apple also knows how to stand out, and they're advertisements are second to none too.

I think it's interesting how android has created a platform that will allow basically everyone to much more easily compete with Apple by greatly reducing the need to invest in r and d. Something that is good for everyone.

Apple will manage to do fine.

Perhaps a watch that is 100% compatible with iOS? If Apple decides to get into this category they will produce the only watch that runs some version of iOS and sell it at a premium. They will reap the benefits of large profit margins on market share that is smaller than Android watches.
