Got a $20 Borders gift card - which video game book should I buy?

Perhaps some of you already own one or more of these books and call tell me which would likely be a better purchase. I've heard great things about the Half-Life book. Thanks.

Power-Up: How Japanese Video Games Gave the World an Extra Life, Chris Kohler

Half-Life 2: Raising The Bar, David Hodgson

The Making of Doom III: The Official Guide, Steven L. Kent

I presently already own 'Masters of Doom' and 'The Ultimate History of Video Games', which is one hell of a comprehensive history on video gaming. I can highly recommend both books.

steve kent wrote the doom3 books...

but i'd still go with the halflife2 one just because it's the the best game ever.

The Halflife 2 book is pretty awesome.

I can't recommend Steve Kent's Doom III book, it kind of sucks (unlike First Quarter).

Haven't read Kohler's -- does it tell us things we haven't read in First Q and Game Over?

Raising the Bar's definitely awesome.

Anybody who hasn't read Masters of Doom absolutely needs to.

I'd recommend taking the power up one - it covers more genres/stuff than the other 2 which does just one company/game.

Yeah, but I'm worried that it may seem too redundant after reading 'The Ultimate History of Video Games'. I understand 'Power-up' focuses more on the Japanese origins of video games which, while they interest me, were still pretty well covered in that previous book. Hmm, turns out there's also a 'making of' book for Halo 1/2. Anyone had a look at this one ?

FLAWLESS VICTOLY!
Get Lucky Wander Boy by d.b. weiss. Seriously, go out on a limb with this one. It's the only good piece of fiction dealing with video games in an obsessive manner.

Out of those others, I'd get Kohler's, it's not really redundant having read Kent's book. I own it, and support a fellow forum dweller. It reads too much like a thesis, and it's a tad too fawning without the cocky and the funny, but it's worth reading.

I'll be sure to check into both of those. I appreciate the recommendations, thanks.

Unless you actually want to buy a book on gaming, you do know that you could just use that $20 on Amazon.com for a game or something, right?

To actually answer the question aside from just saying "Don't buy Power-Up", get Half-Life 2: Raising The Bar.

havent really gotten into it yet

(going through the whole birth of gaming to ataris years)

They're both great gaming book, the later in particular. They could teach a history class on video games using that book.

"They" totally did!

Masters of Doom was unexpectedly awesome. I don't even like Doom, but I grew up on Commander Keen and Wolfenstein 3D, and so I was fascinated by the story.

Hmm I also got one for Christmas , can it be used online?

You can use Borders giftcards online at Amazon.com, you end up paying much less for items than you would if you shopped at a B&M Borders store.

Hah, that's awesome! If only we could get classes like that at my local junior college. And I agree, Masters of Doom was a great read - the dynamic between Carmack and Romero was fascinating, and man, who knew Carmack could be such a dick? Still, it's completely excused by his talent.

Yeah, use it on Amazon.com, the actual Borders store is pretty overpriced.

I'd have to recommend Power Up as well. It was an extremely interesting read.

Off-topic: I have been looking for Game Over but can't seem to find it. Anybody know where I can get it for an acceptable price?
