If it's a low end hourly job, it may work like that.
Typically recruitment agencies do not get anything like 50%, if you or an employer got taken that badly it's certainly an outlier case.

Here in the great northwest, you are looking at taking a 30% - 50% cut and tend to be the first to go when they make cuts. With the way the big tech companies are laying off, looking for something with a smaller company would be a lot more beneficial. I have worked with them on both sides, hiring and being hired.

We can agree to disagree on this one. I was in the industry for almost 25 years. Both doing the hiring and getting hired.I do know that one contract i did for a couple of years they made almost nothing from me as they needed my knowledge specifically and I was coming back after taking a break for health issues. There are several agencies who cover the industry in this area and for a couple of years now it has been a bidding war with contracts. Who can go the cheapest or outsource the most. I have been out of the industry now for about 3 years so it is possible that things have changed in that time. I do know, since I have a ton of contacts across multiple corporations as well as still watch tech news, layoffs continue to happen, some agencies are losing both cred and people for being too greedy and instead of outsourcing to India, there is a push to outsource to mexico.
That's the key "permanent hires." The problem with the area around here (Seattle/Eastside) is that there is a rarity to go from temp to permanent hire. In the early 90s to the early 2k it was "the way" to get your foot in the door. Do a temp contract in PSS or CSS, testing, or IT. Bust your butt and get hired. It is no where as easy anymore, they either layoff people and hire them back as temps, hire people as permatemps, or just plain outsource it to India or Mexico leaving behind one fte or permatemp to manage the outsourced work. When you are hired into a permatemp position, you do all the work for the company you normally would do as an FTE with all the benefits since your benefits fall under the agency who put your butt in the seat. Stock? nope. medical? "maybe" and even then it's bare minimum, some do offer 401k plans. The thing is, we have a supply and demand problem here and it gets worse with each graduating class of cs majors and what seems to be a never ending supply of h1b's all of this impacts large corporations and you might not see this sort of thing at a small to mid size company. I would also guess that a small to.midsize company would have a decreased impact on the mental health of the OP compared to the crunch modes of bigger companies.
