I've seen a few posts on GAF about members being laid off, but wanted to start a new thread.

Was about an hour into work today when I got the news I was being let go immediately.

Not due to performance but due to the state of the business. I wasn't the only one so I will take solace in that. But still it sucks and I'm just letting it sink in today. Taking the rest of the day to relax and will begin the search again asap.

The company I worked for does all it's business in big box retail stores (Walmart, Target, Kroger for example) and online stores (i.e., Amazon). The 2nd half of 2024 was rough and the start of 2025 has been as well.

I'm not surprised, but it still sucks.

Anyone else going through this or have friends or loved ones going through the same pain?

Shit, sorry to hear that. Try and stay positive. Where possible, try to have a bunch of applications on the go at any one time so that a single one isn't the focus. Hopefully you find something new soon.

It happens. Laid off myself 20 years ago in a restructuring where they combined two divisions into one. So a bunch of us got gassed. And at that time, I was scraping by on monthly bills. Stay positive, pump out those recruiter messages and even contact some good friends and fam if they know of any jobs.

It's not always the worst situation longer term. I got a job a month later which was a better company, higher pay, and great coworkers who are among my best friends now. Best boss I ever had too.

Sometimes the grass is greener on the other side.

I am sorry. I understand how you feel probably more than you know. I was laid off a month ago. Fortunately I have a lot of contacts in my industry and had 5 offers in 2 weeks and started a new position Monday. My program had a major cut, and is continuing to get major cuts due to poor leadership.

Fortunately we save money and plan for these type of things in out family, so if they hit, we can weather it for a while. But there is a feeling of existential dread when you get the notice.

Yeah, that feeling of dread is very real.

An old recruiter just reached out to me and I'm setting up some time to talk and set up a game plan. Nothing is guaranteed but I will take every advantage I can get.

Update your Linkdin. Update your resume. Look for work and just begin to submit. Reach out to your network of people. I happened to know a lot of people in the industry and had a lot of people send out my resume and give recommendations to their leads. Some people even created recs for me.

Don't wait around and get out in front of it all.

Sorry to hear that but try to look at it as a positive, I've been let go in the past and it actually did me a favor and found something better. Do you get unemployment while you search?

I'm getting a small severance and also filed for unemployment. Unemployment knows of the severance package as well. The wife and I have savings as well that can hold for a bit.

Yeah, it's a bummer and being positive that it will lead to greater things. It just hit so unexpectedly.

Retail or its tentacles is not a good place to be for the next few years. Godspeed finding a new gig. Get that UI going now. It's always best to get that ball rolling ASAP

I have gone through this twice in the last five years and both times ended up in significantly better spots, as I am sure you will.
Try to enjoy the time, if you can, and don't settle for the next gig if you can hold out for something you know you'll love.

Sorry to hear you're dealing with that. But it sounds like you have a good attitude about it all things considered. I agree with what others have said about networking, updating linkedin and your resume, etc.

If you ever had an interest in changing careers now may be the ideal time to do it. Network, network, network. I got my current role by networking in a new industry where I knew no one. I just went professional association meetings, met people. Emailed people at firms, had coffee with them, and did a few things on my own time to show potential employer's I had the bare bones skills on software in the industry I wanted to be in.

Best of luck to you. I suspect you'll land on your feet based on your attitude.

Sucks to hear that. A bunch of us got laid off last year and it took me 8 months to find something. Oh and I got sick during it as well. Admittedly the new company saw I was looking since I turned that on in linked in and they reached out to me. Best of luck.
