Which are the best Tivo sites/forums to visit? Which hacks should I look into? There any way I can just yank the fan out of the thing? So on and so forth...thanks.

do a lot of reading before asking questions. Most things are already answered on there, and they eat noobs for breakfast (at least dumb ones)

Best hacks for me (standalone UK Tivo, so no idea if they work on yours):

Bigger hard drive (from 40GB to 240GB)
Better encode mode (not relevant for direcTivo anyway)
Turbonet - ethernet upgrade, which allows for
Streaming to my Xbox - yum!
Streaming to my PC
Downloading recordings to my PC for burning to DVD

tivocommunity kind of sucks... you aren't allowed to talk about hacking on there at all pretty much except for upgrading your hard drive.

dealdatabase is the shit, but yeah.. do a lot of reading first.

what kind of DirecTivo you have will really dictate what you can do with it.. if you have a new Series 2.5 RID unit with 6.x software, you may be SOL on pretty much everything except for hard drive upgrades. The newest units REQUIRE a PROM mod to install any software. That means pulling out a surface mounted chip and installing a socket and then plugging the chip back in to flash with new prom code. yeah, tough stuff...

best stuff for a DirecTivo are:

USB drivers (actually on the unit but you have to enable them through hacks)
recompiled USB drivers (faster transfers)
external storage
USB Ethernet
FTP/Telnet
TivoWebPlus
mfs_tools (download and upload shows from the tivo or between two tivos)
TyTool (format shows for DVD)
elseed (on screen callerid)
scramble hack - actually required for any sort of show transferring. stop shows from recording scrambled

that is all off the top of my head...

The black man everyone at Activision can agree on
tivocommunity does not SUCK.

Does GAF suck because you can't really talk about piracy?

Tivocommunity has a set policy for what can and cannot be discussed... if you want to talk about Hacks, TivoCommunity ain't the place to be.

IF you want to get operational questions answered, keep up with the latest deals, etc... then TivoCommunity has a great DirecTV/Tivo board.

I'm going to go ahead and point out the ironic fact that I spelled 'educate' improperly in my thread title before an outside party beats me to it. LOL, I'm lame! Oh, and thanks for the feedback so far...

a couple of things.

modding your Tivo to accept different software is not illegal.

modding your tivo to extract video, while against DMCA (which is bullshit) falls under fair use and is therefore technically legal.

installing callerid apps, web servers, or even open software applications and kernels (re: Tivo 4.0) is also not illegal.

yet none of these things can be found on tivocommunity. even further, WHERE you can find this legal info cannot be discussed on tivocommunity. Not only that but in many cases moderators give out knowingly incorrect info when such questions are asked. Such as the famous "Can I burn shows to DVD." followed up with "The only way to do it is to buy a DVD Recorder."

I understand tivocommunity is hand in hand with Tivo and thus wants to remain on Tivo's good side... however this not only refusal to mention anything besides hard drive upgrades along with the moderators' misinformation to discourage such behaviour makes it impossible to be considered a credible site.

Years ago Tivocommunity used to be cool.. you used to be able to talk about networking, TivoWeb made its debut on TC, elseed, external storage, etc.. all open grounds for conversation with digital extraction still off limits... Yes, TC used to be cool even when you still weren't able to talk about extraction. But now it has become ridiculous. The only thing TC is good for is a link to Hinsdale to find out how to upgrade drives. But beyond that TC has no useful information, and the information it does have is hopeleslly outdated and superceded.

I am sorry if you take offense to this but allow me to give you some examples. My HD Tivo had a problem seeing two local HD channels that were on subchannels. It was the station's fault, nevertheless it was annoying. Posting on the TC forum for two months saw nothing.. nothing in the way from Tivo, nothing in the way from the station, and nothing in the way from that community. But posting for just 1 day on dealdatabase pretty much fixed the situation.

another example. HD Tivo version 3.1.5d was sitting in peoples' MFS database for over a week. for over a week all that was allowed to be talked about was that 3.1.5d was coming. those of us who installed it were PM'ed to not talk about the fixes or changes until after it was released.

like I said, if you are a dedicated member over there and take offense I apologize.. I too am a dedicated member (just look up my username). However it doesn't change the fact that if you are interested in doing anything with your Tivo beyond playing with the default interface or adding a hard drive that site has nothing to offer. And I say the site sucks because if you even ask about doing a number of other things you will be given incorrect and misleading information to discourage you from actually finding the correct answers.
