Hero said:Besides Lumines, is the PSP launch really that impressive? I mean, is anything new in Vampire Chronicles? Hot Shots Golf and Ridge Racer are plentiful on PS2, does the PSP versions offer anything that can't be found? The biggest reason I want a PSP now is that I can use it as a portable mp3 player and movie player. Portable Naruto = hot.
Not to see that the US NDS launch was hot. SM64DS, FTM, and MDS were the only good titles. But the Japanese launch was a bit more impressive and fresh in my opinion.

SantaCruZer said:There isn't any competition? In Japan there is, and DS has still sold very well even after PSP launched. yes yes I know that the PSP only ship like 100K per week, but that doesn't change the fact that you can wait until you get your hands on a PSP instead of getting a DS. The DS numbers didn't take a dive when the PSP came out.
DJPS2 said:My apologies... I was only looking at this from my own domestic (US) angle, and not from the Japanese angle. In that aspect, your argument does hold merit.

Spike said:What equal ground? Next year we'll see the release of Xenon. Will people be willing to drop the $100-150 for the DS or the $100-150-200 for the PSP when the Xenon will be out? And if the tiered pricing for the Xbox 2 (with or without hdd) is correct, will the base unit bring it to a comparable level to the DS/PSP pricing levels?
There's no way that anyone can accurately predict next years sales. No one knows what will happen in this industry.
Nintendo had the right idea to release this Christmas season and get some moderate sales before the next generation of home consoles begin. Sony's taking a gamble that the PSP will outsell the Xenon, especially when you consider that the PS3 will release soon after.
I don't really like portables. If I was forced to pick one though, I'd likely go with DS. Simply because I'm pretty sure that any PSP game can be easily done on the PS2, whereas the DS' touch screen isn't available on the Cube.
That said, luckily I don't have to choose. I'll be buying both.

THAT'S RIGHT BITCHES
Nintendo DS = Hot coffee (good coffee too, maybe even a Gingerbread Latte)
PSP = Blowjob from hot chick (Maybe Jessica Biel)
MassiveAttack said:A reasonable argument but fundamentally flawed when viewed in light of the fact that handheld and console purchases are often made by different consumers or consumers who would like to play games both at home and away.
Were GBA sales adversely affected by PS2 and XBOX sales in 2001? Absolutely not and yet GBA and XBOX shipped in the same year. Unless MS has a secret XBOY planned for 2005, I simply fail to see a significant impact on either DS or PSP sales when Xenon releases.
In the same vein, this idea of multiple versions and tiered pricing for Xenon is a catastrophically stupid strategy, if it exists at all.

The PSP has much better hardware, but isn't very much available. Sony isn't going to change this very soon (they lose a lot on one PSP). By the time the PSP is wide available the DS has sold huge amounts and doesn't care anymore about PSP.
It's like Xbox vs PS2
Marty Chinn said:I still believe that once software becomes available, the Nintendo DS could offer the better gameplay experience by offering new ways of playing games and new concepts that haven't been done before. Unfortunately, that time is not now or the near future.
The Nintendo DS launch line up is almost a disaster. I dare say its one of the worst launch lineups in console and portable gaming history. I've always been a huge Nintendo fan and I've owned every Nintendo system from the SNES on at launch. That includes a US SNES, Japanese GB Color, Japanese GBA, US Virtual Boy, Japanese N64, and Japanese GC. In fact I stood in the line, what line there was, to get a Japanese GC on day one. I did not get a Nintendo DS at launch because the software line up was terrible. Nintendo's own offering was just Mario 64 DS? Come on that's poor for even Nintendo. Metroid should have been launch, Wario Ware should have been ready. Heck Wario launched in Japan and won't be ready until February in the US. This is just a terrible software launch for the Nintendo DS. Add on top that the software looks like a generation gap between the PSP right now, and it just doesn't look impressive at all. I still believe once the big guns come out and the developers start taking advantage of the two screens and touch interface, the Nintendo DS will be great, but until then, it's hard for me to praise it. I still have trouble actually wanting to buy any games for the system even though I did get one for Christmas.
Now the PSP on the otherhand, I was pretty down on it thinking while it was more fancy, that it offered nothing new to portable games except stuff that looked better. To a degree that is still true, but the difference in hardware capabilities between it and the DS let alone anything else out there is just too significant this time around. The launch line up, an impressive nineteen games, has plenty of good to great titles in it. I can't honestly think of a better launch line up of software that actually held up in the quality of the title that is better than the PSP's. Heck, just think how small launch line ups in Japan are normally. You're lucky to get 5 titles and at most 10. But here we got almost 20? Ridge Racer, Vampire Chronicles, Lumines, Minna no Golf, Metal Gear Acid, and Dynasty Warriors all are good titles, and they're all launch software.
I'm sorry but right now it's just hard for me to even grasp the thought that the Nintendo DS has better software than the PSP, let alone a better launch line up. The simple fact taht people claiming you can just play games similiar to them on the PS2 should be testiment enough. Heck it's a weak argument to put down the PSP because honestly, other than a couple of titles, what on the GBA and Nintendo DS can you not get the same experience from other consoles?
seismologist said:It's pretty subjective, but since aside from Lumines you can play all of those games without having a PSP...
I'm not trying to downplay Lumines but the DS has already shown to be the far better puzzle game system. I can't get enough of Hitofude at the moment.
seismologist said:Well Ridge Racers better be good since it looks like it'll be the best thing on PSP for a pretty long time.
Spike said:But, wouldn't it be more logical that the PSP would entice current PS2/GCN/Xbox owners into purchasing it rather than just the consumers who have only been purchasing GBAs? If so, then wouldn't these same consumers walk into the store and see a PSP for $199 and a Xenon for $299 and say that the Xenon would be the better deal? Couldn't they be more enticed to go for that system over the PSP?
