Grandia III - GOTY for Misogynists!

Agent Dormer

Dirty Drinking Smoker
Okay, so I too questioned the credibility of Grandia III as a GOTY contender, but the recent cut scene about 6 hours in confirms for me that it is a true champion of, if anything, misogynist morals. Miranda, the mother of the main character, Yuki, (who looks old enough to be his younger sister's hot friend from school) tries to follow her son in an irrational moment - one of her many throughout the game. Alonso, the charming and manly sailor who joined your party and put the moves on Moms, restrains her, throws her up against the wall, and when she still struggles, he gives her a slap across the face, which returns her from the "crazy bitch" mode to "docile, subservient, listening to the man" status. Grandia III team, misogynists salute you!

Shemale? Or a woman who lost her real breasts due to extreme weight traning?

No idea, and I don't have any plans to look further. So let's just assume that is indeed a woman.

I don't think Grandia 3 is a woman hatin' game. I think it's a game that simply hates those that choose to play it, regardless of gender. Never before have I felt like quitting an RPG because the narrative is completel awful. The narrative of Grandia 3 is what happened when insipid and awful conceived a child.

I'm starting to wonder how much loner the combat could make this thing worthwhile. . .it's beginning to get old. This may be a fault of nostalgia painting the previous games in a rose-tinted light, but I SWEAR the combat feels jankier this game, and that ranomness plays a bigger role than in previous games. Anyone else feel like that?

Just about 9 hours in, and I'm feeling like this game is a 6.0 - 6.5. And from what the forum says, it only goes downhill from here.

So this is just as bad as Grandia II then? I guess it isn't too surprising. GII had an innovative though broken combat system and the worst story/characters I've seen in an RPG. I expected more of the same with GIII so I'm glad I avoided it.

Yeah I'm having the same problem now too. The story just goes downhill again after you head to Acriff. I'm having a hard time trying to keep pushing myself along. I still find more enjoyment from the wandering with battles than the story segments. If things don't improve, I may just sell this off, and play Grandia 2 again for the greatness of Millenia or Grandia Xtreme for the battles. Although I do get a sense of enjoyment beefing up my characters with the spell books, and love fusing mana eggs to create the ultimate melee/battle user combo.

Yeah G3 is a shining example that the common belief "who cares about plot if the gameplay is good!" is not quite true. If the narrative is that bad, it really hurts the experience no matter how good the gameplay is. Grandia 2 > G3 which is saying A LOT since G2 had a pretty bad narrative.

Unfortunately, yes, I'm feeling that too. The game feels compelled to instruct you on when you can cancel and when you should just give up and defend, which is really an admission that unlike Grandia II, you really wouldn't be able to tell on your own intuitively. The game takes its time giving you new skills to play with, too.

It can't be worse than Xtreme.

Oh it is not worse than Xtreme. But Grandia 3 puts more emphasis on story where Grandia Xtreme is more dungeon hack and slashing.

I believe you can turn the hints off somewhere in the menu. I'll check later tonight.

You'd think that, but there is a lot of garbage to scroll through in Xtreme, 3 just presents it all pretty-like.

Yes, you can, but the fact that it's there says something. That option was never in the earlier games.

I'm sorry, I can't join the discussion because I am still looking at the titties of doom up there.

Damn, those look painful!

Yeah I suppose. It has been awhile since I played Xtreme. However, I can say the voice acting in Grandia 3 is decent. So it does help take in the crappy cliche story much easier.

Also, I'm not in a mood to point out such things, but since I'm in a mood to hate on whatever I can in the game: What's up with the shitty CG? For how awesome the rest of the game's presentation is, why did they skimp on the copious amounts of CG in the game? The models are pretty much the same as the field ones, except they look worse because some sort of smoothing has been applied to them to make them look FMV-tastic.

I'm to the second disc, and I have skipped every cutscene thus far. The moment one starts, the plot/dialogue appear so wretched that I'm literally COMPELLED to whack SELECT until the characters are under my control again. Tales of Legendia's plot almost seems like high literature compared to Grandia 3's, and ithat game had a plot and characters I'd rather shove a glass rod down my cock and shatter than experience again.

On the other hand, I hugely disagree about the combat. It's fuckin' brilliant. The fact that you get super rare loot for aerial finishers makes you endlessly futz around trying to get characters closer on the gauge, such that speed becomes the attribute you tinker with the most. This is the sort of stuff I eat up -- a wholly, massively exploitable combat system. I've reset the last two boss fights despite victory just so I can try to beat them without any damage taken. I love love LOVE the improved difficulty.

Right now, I'd place the game at about Grandia II level -- great combat, short as a Gaffer's cock, and a stupid plot too embarrassing to follow. I'm sad that I hafta agree with Shouta, though; as brilliant as the combat is, Grandia X is just a little bit better in that regard despite the lack of Aerial Combos.

I'm 9hours in and I won't touch this again. The story just gets worst and the combat is getting so repetitive. Would it really be that hard to have more then 3 different enemies per fields.

Lilly could SO kick her ass.

See, this is why I always wait a few months to pick up RPGs. Thank you GAF for letting me play bad games vicariously!

I'll give ya 25 plus shipping :D

Another bad point: Visible enemies on the map are good in many cases. When you have to grind so much, it's not. Especially when those enemies are always in the exact same location.

If you want me to level up, give me random encounters.

I traded my copy for my roommate's Black preorder. I feel like I ripped him off.

11 hours in now, and oh my lord, there's actually a segment where they show Alfina learning how to cook food properly for the boy she'd love to be with if her convictions to loving her brother didn't exist first. It's too endearing for my black heart. Drinky's whack select theory (like Alonso's whacking women policy) works for me.

I agree with this.

I'm not selling my game sorry.

Just wait until you get to some of the cutscenes in the second half. You'll be begging for a "slap" button.

Let's call it the Alonso button instead, as a tribute to the hero that made this thread possible!

You're such a sucker for stat tinkering. :lol I do wish you could manipulate the IP gauge in a more fine manner than endlessly smacking the Speed stat. The speed stat is just too inaccurate for me and it makes setting up Aerial Combos annoying when I want to progress which is why I resorted to the Berserker/Shippujin/Kage Bunshin setup for my melees for fast killing when I played the JP version of the game.

I love the boss difficulty in the game and I wish it had a boss attack mode or something so I wouldn't have to go through the story again. The bosses in the game are at least on par with Grandia Xtreme if not a bit better and is the real highlight of the game. The exponential growth in enemy difficult right towards the end of the game is stupid as hell though.

But yeah, if Grandia Xtreme had Aerial Combos, it'd be like the best iteration of the battle system ever. You could do so much more with your characters in Xtreme that it makes Grandia III look immensely tame in customization.

I let my neighbor, a fan of getting wasted and killing hookers in GTA for shits and gigles, play for a few while I was on the phone. He had some observations I'd like to share:

"Dude, I've only been playing for two seconds, but I can tell that this chick (Alfina) likes it up the pooper."
"Uh, okay, why's that?"
"Well, you can just tell, dude. She likes it up the butt."

REAL INVESTIGATIVE JOURNALISM HERE FIRST!
