Graphical Fidelity I Expect This Gen

You're tripping. These games are crazy good looking for indie/AA scene.

What these studios are doing with tiny budgets is insane. Now compare that to AAA scene with $200 million budgets and games that barely look better than what we've got last gen.

When a single developer show something like this

while sony first party studio show something like this

Then there is nothing to say than fuck them

Unsure if this is a good place to ask but I've noticed games where they achieve 30 fps without motion blur that is so smooth you'd think it was 60fps.

In particular I'm referring to red dead 2 on ps4. I picked up for $15 thinking I wouldn't mess with it much having completed it on my PC years back.

To my surprise I legit can't tell this is 30fps. Yet if I turn on 30 fps mode on something I played recently like assassins creed shadows, or Callisto protocol it is jarring and immediately noticeable.

What are they doing here that others haven't adapted?

I now have 0 concerns for gta6 being 30 fps if it runs like rdr2 does.

It's because you are switching instantly from 60 to 30. It's very noticeable and takes you a while to adjust to the drop. Red Dead 2 is 30fps only so you got used to how the game looks from the start and your brain expects it to be like that when you return to it.

We have been playing many games at 30fps just fine over the decades. It's just that more games have offered 60fps performance modes this gen. There is a degree of framerate snobbishness that has developed alongside that, which makes people proclaim 30fps as now unplayable. They will rapidly adjust to a 30fps GTA6 when that arrives and it will stop being a problem, like it wasn't for years.

true but I was talking about how different teams utilise the same engine differently , especially for character rendering

while on that, here is what peak IOI character rendering looks like:

you go through all the trouble of hiring Hollywood talent and this is what you come up with?
you can see the same weakness in the latest version of Glacier, meaning that facial expression/resemblance,
skin shaders and character rendering has never been their strongest suit, nor a priority for them

Not since Absolution.

I can assure you - it's not what you're describing above.

Frauds. I feel bad for Sony execs who have to pay these lazy hacks millions of dollars to produce last gen trash that still takes five to seven years to make.

Not to mention how they go E3 after E3 without having anything to show for it. I can only imagine the marketing people who are like wtf are we even doing here?

I liked this shot in RE9: Requiem trailer

Resident-Evil-Requiem_02-scaled.jpg
Yep. this was the one shot in the trailer that made it look next gen. the rest was extremely dated. But this shot gives me hope because i can see really good materials, reflections, and proper GI bounce lighting and AO that i typically only see in UE5 or RTGI games. very SH2 like.

i think its just a really bad trailer. very poor way to showcase this game.

I like the way re9 looks ...and especially because I know it will actually look like that unlike some of these other games that are harder to believe in
I'd prefer devs do the realistic approach like this rather than a tech demo that they want to shoot for but fail to surpass or match every time.

Graphics are extremely impressive, and everything looks much better with movement.

it's unbelievable how far open world games has come!

Last generation developers would need to choose between open world with bad graphics, or linear with amazing graphics!
Today, Assassins Shadows looks better than Uncharted 4.
I want to see what The Witcher 4 will reach on PS6 with UE5 or even the UE6

Its crazy how amazing Shadows looks, but then they animate their characters like puppets, with no life or personality during cutscenes. Its pretty sad to build that quality and then execute it so poorly

I thought it looked pretty decent for a japanese game...
It looks better than re8 and you praised that thing.

It looks incredible. If this wasn't AC, people would be talking a lot more about it I imagine.

Based on the trailer it looks like a walking simulator with very little interactivity into the game world. If Sucker Punch only wanted to make a gorgeous trailer then they could beat that a thousand times, so it feels a bit disingenious what you're doing.

Yep. Compare that to other AAA games and Shadows is several generations behind

Outlaws have the same problem, great looking game overall but the cut-scenes have that AA indie quality (or lack of) to them.

Chronicles: Medieval

I guess they have their own engine, couldn't find any details.

Loved this part of the trailer.

Some WIP in engine footage here

Chromatic abberation + radial blur

Yeah, I don't understand why devs are so keen on massacring the image quality while destroying the performance as well. There is no point in pushing for 4K quality if you are smearing shit and vaseline all over your game. Jesus Christ.

Well, that show from Microsoft was ass. I really thought they'd bring their heavy guns like Fable and Gears and I was dead wrong. High on Life 2, Cronos from Bloober and new Plague game were the standouts for me, all looked very impressive. Expected more from Clockwork Revolution, the graphics are nothing to write home about, it's being carried by its artstyle.
