Graphical Fidelity I Expect This Gen

They still look like american cities, I mean yeah gta4 is new york and gta5 is los angeles so you have some difference, wukong and blood whatever are both chinese with similar locations.

Also, the different level of fidelity between gta5 and 4 probably help differentiate them, photorealistic graphic is gonna look all samey at a certain point, sand is fucking sand and rocks are fucking rocks and detailed statues are detailed statues.

When games have different location, all of a sudden they all look different, you people are trippin if you think this shit look all the same:

I swear, that Witcher IV demo could just be another 'biome' from Immortals or that Monkey game.

And yeah, you're right, photorealistic ends up looking samey. That's why I don't want just photorealism. I want hyper fidelity paired with obsessive attention to detail and a unique vibe. Basically, the Rockstar approach to graphics.

Also, Stalker 2 looks so good in that picture, I need to get around to playing that. I promised myself I will play it on release but I'm so far behind it's not even funny.

Wait until they completely fix a-live in s2, if you play now you play a beta version of the game basically, they improved since launch but still not there yet.

I think rockstar knows that they can't still reach photorealism so they stilyze their games a bit, i think that when gta8 is gonna be out and photorealism is gonna be in their grasp, their game is gonna look more samey.

Maybe i'm wrong.

exactly , games will look the same only when devs use the same generic assets and dont add stuff of their own , use their creative thought

Any talk about UE5 great looking game titles have same look are just bullshit as GymWolf GymWolf showed also anthor example is Death Stranding and horizon both have same engine but looks totally different even both looks great on ps4

I know :messenger_heart:.

Does it, though? Don't get me wrong, both look amazing, but they seem built from the same movie-like, hyper-realistic assets, making them feel almost identical. Compare that to something like Red Dead Redemption 2 (arguably one of the best if not the best looking game from last gen), and it's no contest in terms of unique art direction.

I just worry that soon all games will end up looking like the digital sets in The Mandalorian. Not the worst thing that could happen, but still, I'd love to see more variety.
i wouldnt call witcher 4 going for the same photorealistic movie look as HB2. I think it's far more stylized like a cross between RDR2 and HFW. Not as cartoony as HFW, but definitely not aiming for photorealism.

Completely different art style and color pallete. It's more like Avatar actually.

ILL, Atomic Heart, Witcher 4 and High on Life 2 were all revealed at E3, and all of them couldnt look more different.

UE5 is just an engine. Devs can go for various different art styles. Chinese developers are just going for their own mythology at the moment because the west barely covered it. Maybe thats why it feels oversaturated but they are staying true to the mythology/era/setting.

South Korean, Russian and other chinese devs are using UE5 to make modern or futuristic games that look very different from the Chinese mythology games.

Fucking hell the contrast bump in your Witcher IV GIFs really makes it look like Avatar. This is how it actually looks:

We had this argument maybe 2 weeks back based on death stranding 2 shot with poor textures on these rocks near player feet.
I am watching some new gameplay... and as always, it was either a bad moment or motion blur, because it looks super sharp

Again - this is still a snip from yt shitty vid

yeah, its probably a bug. thats actually the best looking area in the game. the rest of the world doesnt look as detailed. the ground level detail especially looks very last gen. not bad, just dated.

That said, and I keep saying this, but the game will surprise people. Kojima and his team will make sure there are enough next gen moments in setpieces to make it stand out even if the main open world isnt anything to write home about.

Give HB2 a try. It will become apparent that both games have completely different art styles. Regardless, the point was that UE5 can let devs do whatever they want. Just look at high on life 2. It has nothing in common with Witcher 4 or HB2. It's like ratchet and steroids. And yet I instinctively knew it was UE5 because no one else is pushing this level of graphics fidelity.

Same thing happened with Mafia 4. We saw those lemons in the very first screenshot and knew only nanite can make those lemons look that amazing. That to me speaks volume since back in the day if we saw something that looked too good to be true, we assumed it was pre-rendered. Now we assume its UE5.

Definitely looks really nice in these shots

I don't know how to explain it, and I say this as a fan of High On Life 1, those gifs of the second game have a 'visual noise' feeling, like too much is going on at once with too much detail in too many places.

I know that's an odd thing to say in a graphics fidelity thread, but I feel like as things get more detailed in gaming, this is going to become a future issue that video game directors will have to learn from movie directors on how to dial back a bit and make sure that the player/audience is able to focus on what needs to be focused on.

Ds2 is close we are gonna see soon enough how much yt compression killed the graphic of this game, FINALLY a game to try this fucking ps5 pro.

I saw some shit pics officially released by sony in 4k so i'm still skeptic.

pro is not getting nearly enough use and love. Feels almost like sony abandoned it.
That's my problem with these mid gen refreshes

Tell me about it... i bought this shit, played dragon age on it and thats it. Collecting dust since i moved back to PC gaming.

Dont worry, we are used to it now. Rofif was using overdetailed as a criticism just a couple of days ago.

P.S the game is definitely too noisy but its just a carefully crafted trailer. youre right, they will change it to ensure it wont look as busy during gameplay for readability.

Completely agree with this. This is why games have started color coating the 'correct' path forward (yellow paint in RE), or use lighting (callisto) to help the player find their route.

When everything looks highly detailed it becomes increasingly harder to parse out visually what is intractable and what is just scene dressing.

lol yeah, DS2 will be the first new game i will be playing on the PS5 since FF7 came out last year. i guess Astro bot too but i only played it for a few hours trading controllers with my kids.

i still go back to it to try HFW, Spiderman 2, and Ratchet every now and then, but then again, i used to do that with the base PS5 too. Those games look stunning and sometimes when im in the mood, i just boot up those games and fly to my favorite areas just to appreciate the fidelity.

i know FeelsLikeIm42 thinks its a waste of money, but i like that they added new graphics enhancements to both HFW and Spiderman 2. Yes, they are subtle, but PS4 to ps4 pro was basically a resolution upgrade so its nice to get some graphics enhancements this time around. I am excited to see what Kojipro adds to the Pro version. Even if the game lacks RTGI or nanite, i think the game has the potential to impress on the Pro if they add those same visual upgrades to HFW's Pro version. I typically only played the native 4k version of HFW so it was kinda insane to see the performance mode on the Pro look even better.

You'll see improvement to shadows, depth-of-field, skin and hair shaders, clouds, god rays and so much more.
Visual grittiness in fine environmental details like moss, leaves, and the red stealth bushes is banished, but even some textures and holograms looked noticeably cleaner and crisper. The Pro Performance mode also benefits the game's volumetric effects; misty sunbeams were free of distracting shimmers and strobing we noticed in the PS5's stock Performance mode.

Looking at this scene's screenshot taken directly from the PS-Store (which has a slightly better quality), I guess it'll be fine:
