Great new VW ad. :)

Great advert. Reminds me of a light-hearted Chris Cunningham advert, cept I'm waiting for the evil looking girl with pig-tails to make an appearance.

Hang out with Steve.
Wow... but I guess the estate of Gene Kelly allowed it. If Steve McQueen can advertise the 2005 Mustang, why not have Gene Kelly advertise the new Golf GTI. Still seems very odd and a bit disrespectful, though...

When people were saying "freaky," I figured it was just in seeing someone who's long since gone doing something new. Then I watched it.

Freaky.

Do I have to have watched something to get this? It's just this dancing in the rain guy dancing... and it wasn't cool/funny/anything?

You've never seen Singin' in the Rain?

Its the best known dancing scene in Singin' in the Rain, remixed extremely well. Its pretty cool to see Gene Kelly dance like that, albeit a little freaky as well.

Cool and disturbing at the same time.

How many deceased personalities are going to be messed with and/or simulated with modern and future CG? Who's going to make sure that people don't go too far with it? I mean, some will consider that advert a serious mockery of Gene Kelly's career.

Yeah, I'm generally indifferent to people posting double threads given how fast the forums go, but I was ready to knock over a magazine rack if this was the VW bomber ad again. But then I figured, with 20 replies it had to be something else, unless GAF was feeling overly malicious today. Thank god that never happens.

Does anyone know if the whole thing is actually CGI or did they paste Kelly's face on another dancer doing the moves? It looks like it's all CGI to me which just makes it look kind of weird in alot of places given the animation (too much spaghetti arms). It would have worked better had they gotten a proportionally similar dancer and just pasted Kelly's face on him.

Wow, the Gene Kelly ad blows my mind. That's just amazing. Although it seems a bit disrespectful to me, I guess someone in his family had to sign off for it, so it's ok. I love when computer technology in special effects is used for stuff like this and Forrest Gump. So cool.

Judging by a few people in this thread I think VW may have overestimated how many people that would find this style of dancing cool have ever seen a movie made before the advent of MTV.

It's friggin' SINGING IN THE RAIN. It's not like Metropolis.

I think Gene Kelly's original dance was better than whatever the heck that was. Not to mention that the techno update they did of the song was awful. Completely bastardized the song. I think I would have tried to work in a few tap moves and a few more singing parts...basically remained slightly more true to the original number, while still updating it.

Maybe I'm just old fashioned.

It's a neat commercial, none the less.

I like the McQueen Mustang ad better, though.

Wonder what is next in this trend? Elvis advertising shoes...or prescription drugs.

Lisa Edelstein's dad touched my private parts. True fact.
We rarely talk but I think we have similar taste, Olimario. Working on website as we speak, you should see huge amounts of new work soon. I have watched that commercial upwards of 40 times. :)

There's no doubt my tastes are in line with yours, Mario. I've been in absolute awe of pretty much all of your artwork, if that's any indication.

It's most likely a dancer with Kelly's face either pasted on, or digitally recreated. Or a combination of both.

But yes, very cool. It makes me recall the days of when I was floored with that Tales From the Crypt episode with a "Gumped" Humphrey Bogart.

Christ. Go into the damned "Classics" aisle at the video store every once and awhile.

Amazing ad. Kudos to whoever made it. Probably my favorite as of late, together with that Citroen C4 transformer ad.

The song "Singing in the Rain" always reminds me more of "Clockwork Orange" than it does of it's original movie however, so this weird spin to it's dancing scene feels even better.

I like how Sarah Lane had this during a news article on The Screen Savers and said how controversial and offensive it was in a somber tone while still playing the entire thing in the background. Yeah, way to prove your point. It was the first time I'd seen it and, I must say, I laughed my ass off.

If anybody cares, the remixed music is by Mint Royale. I seem to be getting conflicting articles about whether or not it was specifically created for the ad.
