Grim Dawn |OT| It's always grimmest at dawn.

You're a braver soul then me tackling hc ultimate with those resists lol.

I can't tell from the screen, but it doesn't look like you're using any of the faction augments yet? Logic being 28% pierce resist with Golemnborn Greaves means you ain't getting much pierce resist anywhere else. Pierce is one of the more important resists and not something to leave behind

Anyway augs are added to gear on top of components and should really help fill those resist, uhh, 'gaps'. You can access them at level 70 (some at 40) if you have the faction rep maxed. You should be at least very close to the Homestead and the Outcast (if you sided with her) by early Ultimate. Rovers shouldn't be far behind either.

If you haven't hit the point in your Ultimate run to unlock access to the vendors, just load it up on elite and portal around and grab what you need.

And for the love of god, put a silk swatch on those shoulders

I'm only using augments on my rings right now, I took that screenshot after taking all the free exp in ultimate and replacing those shoulders (hence the lack of silk swatch lol). I think the only other augment I put in was on the daggers, since I took the time to max out the Black Legion rep and get their revered weaponry. I guess I ought to work on the resists now that it's finished. I'm thinking I'll finish a few quests (and I guess some factions) in Elite before I actually do Ultimate for real. It's probably happening tonight, even.

Being primarily a fire type thankfully means fire resist isn't a concern most days for me hah.

Grim Misadventure #118: Factions - Coven of Ugdenbog

Some sweet lore

In Ugdenbog, away from prying eyes and the scornful looks of the ignorant, the coven practices its craft, safe from the pursuit of the empire's Luminari hounds. You could consider this to be the entirety of the tale, a persecuted people finding refuge in a desolate and foreboding territory to evade their pursuers, but there is much more to the Coven than at first meets the eye.
Also
The Coven of Ugdenbog is just one of four new factions coming your way with the expansion, and that's not including the addition of Beasts as an official hostile faction. Will you greet these new groups with hostility? Or perhaps you will find that you need each other to survive the challenges of Cairn and any disagreements must be set aside?

Very cool. Should mean 5 new nemesis

-edit- thinking about that, make that 3-5

Yay

Grim Dawn Passes 1 Million Copies Sold!

As is our custom, we've somehow made the expansion bigger than we planned but it's shaping up nicely and I'm looking forward to seeing people play it. We still have a couple months of work to wrap that up and then it will require a testing period but it's getting there. We may also be ready to share some news about our mysterious new project toward the end of the year...

Pretty saturated genre but I predict a class based shooter/MOBA/flight sim mashup with MMO and dating sim elements. On mobile.

Now will there be a switch port?

Not bad, but I one-up you this

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3qMoL2r-1Bg

Its actually from a while ago now and I don't know how I missed it, but its the lead dev taking a pretty finished looking inquisitor for a spin through chapter 1. Plenty of interesting tidbits he mentions regarding the expansion, but one thing I can't find news of anywhere is he seems to basically confirm an Xbox one version around the 58 minute mark, stating it was 'actively being worked on'

So there you go. Though keying 'grim dawn xbox one' in google yields nothing

There shouldn't be any difference in how tough the warden is between normal and vet. Vet only affects the number of Heroes that spawn, not how strong they are.

In any case, the wardens the 1st act boss, so he the first real 'check' of the game. He should still be pretty easy though if you are doing things right. A couple of bit of advice that hopefully help

- Put all your leveling up points into physique for now. trust me

- Don't forget to choose a second class if you haven't already. Demo has some strong synergys. Soldiers, arcanists, occultists all work pretty well and all lead to some some pretty different playstyles

- Adding ranks to each mastery increases your base stats like hps and offensive and defensive ability which is all pretty important. With that said, its not always worth maxing the both classes mastery, depending on the skills you want to use.

- Don't spread you're points too thinly when it comes to skills. At that point in the game having 5/6 points in a single skill, should mean that skill pretty much wrecks everything. Same advice stands later on. You really need to focus on one or two main skills with everything else supporting that through auras, buffs passives etc

- For demo, I'd put a point in fire strike and then chuck a few in the explosive blast modifier. That should carry you along pretty well.

- Don't underestimate flashbang, and its modifier which causes enemies to fumble. Its a really strong survival mechanic the whole way through the game, and one of the few ways to reliably cc bosses

- If you are using a ranged weapon craft some flintcore bolts and use the granted skill greater fire blast. This can seriously carry you the whole way through the first playthrough

- As can some of the relic skills. You should be able to craft one or two by now. The skill from something like Squall, even being lightening based, destroys just about everything first time through

- Blast Shield. Not so much now, but its a must later on. Usually worth 10 points or so

- Don't forget to spend devotion points. You should almost have enough to grant a skill like flame torrent, which can be really strong for melee builds especially.

- You can respec just about anything skill wise, but NOT points in the mastery bar, or your attribute points so careful with how you allocate those. As mentioned 99% of the time all points in physique is the way to go with how the games designed at the moment

Woops. That ended up being a few more the 'a couple bit of advice'

In any case, I hope you stick with it and it clicks properly for you. There's a tonne of depth in the way you can create characters, and the world it self is pretty cool to explore with an actual good story too, which is kinda rare for this genre. Probably my favorite game of the last year or two. Happy Warden slaying!

Looks like Titan Quest is 80% off on Steam this weekend for those that may not have it. It's basically the precursor to Grim Dawn but set in Greek myth.

Ok

*takes deep breath*.

Second class is available after you hit level 10. When you go to the skills screen to add points you should see a tab along the top that says 'select mastery' (or similar. I haven't played for a few weeks). Don't worry too much, at your level it's not compulsory, but by level 50 or so you want to at least have made a start on one.

I'd recommend maybe soldier. Its sounds like you have some solid demo skills going on, so pickup soldier for more defensive options and some tankiness. Or arcanist have some fun skills, but it's a little more glass cannon if you want to go the other way.

Flintcore bolts should be able to be crafted at the blacksmith and then attached to your weapon (anything thats classed as ranged will suffice), which then will grant a skill. If not, then use a searing ember for now, which are very common drops. It grants a weaker version of the flintcore bolts skill, but should still be pretty effective for where you're at.

Hmmm, fire strike and stun jacks at those levels for where you're at, should be wrecking house. Have you got levels in flame touched which grants fire and lightening damage, amongst other things, that will buff those 2 skills? Could be a little spirit intensive though with the skills at tthose levels without the means to properly offset it...

Quick jacks just modifies the regular skill and removes the cooldown, at the expense of some damage and stopping power. No need to slot it. It's actually a really cool skill to build around using no basic skills, but very spirit intensive which you need to take measures for and maybe hard to make work properly at low levels. Also, if you go the quick jacks route you really need to take the full spread modifier, which adds more projectiles, and adds some pretty big damage to the skill.

Demo's can have pets. Any class can if you are using an item that has a pet as a skill. Should just be a case of slotting the skill and summoning away. Also, if you select a second class that has summon skills (occultist or shaman) you can use those too. Pets can be fun to play with for a while, but at some point you need to decide weather you go all in using them, or not at all. Hybrids, except for some very specific, highly gear dependent builds, don't really work later on. Full pets builds do, but are pretty hard to put together properly as well. If you wanted to try that, then I'd suggest re-rolling an occultist/shaman. Demo though, isn't a great starting point for anything involving pets.

Ya devotions a little confusing. Instead of me going on and on here's a link to the games guide on how it works. Most if it still stands in terms of the basics

http://www.grimdawn.com/guide/character/devotion.php

Specifically, no spiders not a pet, it only offers buffs. Basically look at each constellation and see if it has a particularly bright star. That will grant a skill of some sort. They're usually at the end of a constealltion and will require other nodes to be unlocked first. The other nodes usually always buff and support the skill, like more fire damage etc, so they are strong by themselves as well. Some skills are attacking that you attach to regular powers to proc off, some are defensive things that you can attach to auras and such for more survivability. Theres plenty of options, which can cause plenty of confusion, but whatever you do never leave points unspent there. There's too much power to be had, even if you're not doing things 'optimally'

For now, I'd see the respec npc in Devils crossing (room in the top right, near fabric lady) and undo those and take the fiend constellation which will give you flame torrent. Attach that to fire strike, and it should be pretty effective.

*exhales*

;)

Any other questions, I'll do my best to help

Further to that, because I'm a little bored, here's my stun jack dude (more or less) who's a Demo + Shaman (who are a good secondary class for lightening) I couldn't upload mine directly, but made this at the below link. Its more or less the same, but I've got some specific rolls on those shoulders and offhand that help out. Still a WIP but I've beaten Ultimate and 150 waves of challenger crucible. Gladiators a different story as always though...

http://www.grimtools.com/calc/dVbJa3VJ

Basic idea is to drop a storm totem which procs reckless tempest (each one gets its own lightning storm!), drop some grasping vines, which immobilizes packs, and procs up elemental storms like crazy for lightening resistance debuff, then spam the shit out of stun jacks (with the bomb from widow attached for more RR) and watch everything die in a massive lightening storm. You can also use wind devil instead of storm totem for reckless tempest. Its arguably better. Just put 1 point in the the first and third parts, and as many as you can in the second one for resist reduction. That moves around and clears screens better, but in a longer sustained fight, I think the totems win out

Also a lot of that gear may be hard to come across at first, but you can still do pretty well with it if you follow the skill setup, and just try to focus using whatever you can find that supports lightening damage. Also that devotion setup requires some dicking around with refunding points and reallocating to areas that support themselves. Thats a later on thing. If you follow it and get that far I can help out some more

Go with Nightblade as your second class. Sabs are stupid powerful, and arguably top three easiest to kit for. Canister Bomb and Grenado with Mines ought to get you through until the end of Elite, when you can nab two Legion Firestarters, respec into Firestrike, and go to town.

Here: http://www.grimdawn.com/forums/showthread.php?p=408608#post408608 you can't go wrong with this. My avatar is pretty much a tweeked version of this.

V1.0.1.0 (Changelog)

There's probably a log on the official forum too but it's blocked from work, so steam will have to do. It's mostly QoL fixes, prep for expansion, and some balancing.

My favorite change:

Shrines will now automatically use items from your transfer and personal stash in addition to your inventory.

I really hope they get the timing right on the expansion. Diablo 3 has the necromancy out soon, then it's the PoE huge update. If Grim Dawn releases near those it's going to get swallowed up by them. Ideally it will come out later in the year when people aren't awash in ARPG options.

Not too worried about the Necro update. It's a) not even the real Necro, but a pale (lol) imitation b) overpriced and c) going to keep the hardcore busy for all of a week.

I don't think GD has ever really been out to compete with those games. Its more of a niche alternative for better or worse. Anyone who plays both this and D3 at least (like me) knows how much better value the GD expansion will be. The main issue there, is all the blinker clad bliz fans, who aren't even aware of some of the alternatives out there. But then that's always been the case and hasn't stopped the base game from still selling a mill since release. Can't comment on PoE cos I'm well and truly out of the loop, but the f2p nature of that tends to attract a different audience IMO

I think it'll do fine whenever it drops.

Its kinda late here, so cbf bashing out a proper response now, but here's some tips I gave someone from a page or 2 back

Good advice above. I'm bored so I'll add a couple of things.

- Regarding component advice above, when you have a completed component, some have equip-able skills that can be used at low levels that can trounce most of normal/veteran. A searing ember (which is very common) for instance gives you a fireball skill that should carry you through to elite. There's some other equivalents for other damage types as well like a poison bomb and an ice spike etc. They don't scale to well into higher difficulties but can be a big help in your first run

- Purchasing gear from vendors isn't really required, although the faction vendors have some level 70 gear that can be really good depending on the build. Its all green stuff still, but designed to fill holes in gear, and can be BiS depending on what you are doing.

- Regarding factions, there's not a whole lot of wrong choices you can make and they don't affect whole lot. There's one choice in the middle of the game which will lock out 1 set of quests and a vendor though, so make sure you speak to the npcs before deciding as they tell you what they will offer. There's also another decision late as well, but that one isn't quite as branching.

- If you head into elite difficulty and onwards start paying attention to resists. Its the fastest way to die ignoring them. Pierce and elemental damage types are all over the place, there's a tonne of poison in the early game and a tonne of chaos late, which will especially wreck your shit. The others are all useful as well, although if you have to leave one behind, aether (for the time being at least) isn't as important.

- Going back to the faction vendors, the best thing they sell are augments which can attach to your gear along with components and are the best way to round out your resists. There are two tiers of them available at level 50 and 70 and are pretty essential to surviving, especially in ultimate difficulty

- You will eventually get an npc that gives you the option to dismantle gear. Don't worry about it until you get have a nice haul of blues and purples that you don't need along with a nice stash of dynamite. You basically blow the gear up and the higher the rarity the better quality crafting mats you potentially get back. Dynamite is fairly rare, and needed to progress the main quest as well as access a few side areas, so keep what you find for those purposes first.

For items/gear etc, that's about all I can think of right now. Have fun!

Regarding occultist, it's a really strong, versatile mastery. Keep in mind you'll get to choose another at level 10 as well. Nightblade, Arcanist or soldier are all good choices. I'd probably recommend NB, and do a poison based build. Poison is probably the easiest damage type to gear for, and those 2 classes give a tonne of synergy for it. In fact thats exactly what my first character (out of 15) was

Occultist is also a strong base class for pet builds if you pair it with shaman (And likely it'll be even better with the coming necro). Warning with pet builds. They work great up to around the end of elite, where you start to need to worry about pet resists, which can be pretty hard to get, so not really worth it until you have some good gear stashed away

Also, do not underestimate how good curse of frailty amongst the occultist powers. It's a spammable debuff in a big area, that debuffs all sort of resists as well as DA and movement speed. It also procs devotion powers like nothing else. It really is one of the best skills in the game. Pretty much any build using occultist worth its salt, uses CoF

Holy crap.

On a whim, after seeing that one Bleed Witchblade build on the Offical Forums, that has a +5 Blade Arc Badge of Mastery as central to it, I decided to gather up all of my crafting supplies that go towards BoMs, and then proceeded to farm what I still needed to get to be able to craft 12 of them.

And then I copied my character file, as a backup.

1536 BoMs later, and still not a single +5 Blade Arc one. Those odds SUUUUUUUUCK.

Grim Misadventure #121: Learning to Necromance

Or how to make a proper necromancer

Blight Fiend
”Unmoved by the noxious fumes of decay, conjure forth an abomination made of corpses and rotting filth to rise up from the earth and subdue your enemies.”

attachment.php

This cheerful guy is just bloated with vile gases and poison and he will eagerly share them with your foes by vomiting up his insides. Upon death, the Blight Fiend erupts in toxic fumes. He can also learn to exhume poison around him, and to unleash a massive eruption of poison. A transmuter allows you to summon Blight Fiends more frequently to take advantage of their explosive tendencies, but they become temporary pets.

Reap Spirit
”One of the most powerful techniques bestowed upon his followers by Uroboruuk. By ripping apart the very being of your foe, one can not only inflict grievous harm, but also conjure forth a fragment of their soul to serve you. The resulting spirit is unstable and highly aggressive, which makes it all the more useful in battle.

attachment.php

This is one of the ultimate techniques available to fully trained Necromancers, allowing you to not only inflict grievous harm upon your foes but also conjure a violent spirit to tear apart anyone that survives. An excellent choice for both Necromancers that choose to deal with their enemies directly and for those that focus on minions, or somewhere in-between.

Grim Misadventure #122: Devoted Arkovia

. Every Celestial Proc in the game will be receiving 5 more ranks, allowing them to reach even greater limits of power!

Adding to that, of the 14 new Constellations, 8 will feature brand new Celestial Procs as well, for even more options when battling the fiends of the void and the aether.

Alladrah's Phoenix
”A faithful pet of the gods, the Phoenix of Alladrah blazes a trail across the starry sky. “

Alladrah’s Phoenix shields you with its fiery feathers, rebuking blows and incinerating all that come too near.

attachment.php

Vire, the Stone Matron
”Commonly depicted in Arkovian lore as the matron of the gods, and thus the mightiest, the Stone Matron represented Cairn itself, the fortitude and strength of stone, unmoving against even the greatest odds.”

Vire conjures a stone fist from the very earth to retaliate against any foe that strikes you, turning them to stone.

I should really finish this before the expansion hits. I'm almost at the end on ultimate but I'm a bit too squishy at the moment to make it to the end.

I'm trying to do the same but actually more people I know have been picking up the game and I've been making new characters to play with them lol.

Is anyone still playing here? Any chance that someone has a Clairvoyant's Robe they don't need (softcore)? =x

I haven't played for a bit, but I'm not going anywhere. Mostly waiting for the expansion, which will probably eek out another 1500 or so hours out of me. In the meantime I'm giving PoE another spin and having some fun there. Though, I can't help but feel that game lacks some of the charm and character of GD, but I'm having more fun then when I originally tried it.

I'm pretty sure I've got a couple of full clairvoyants sets lying around too. Its the one set in the game, that's been generous in dropping for me

Thanks, I managed to get a clairvoyant set completed though. Now crafting relics is a huge undertaking for me, component drops are stupidly rare when you consider how much is needed on some of these relics and equipment.

I feel like PoE is really bland. Plus that skill tree is just adding lots of shit for the sake of adding lots of shit. Only a couple people I know are into PoE but it seems like more people are picking up Grim Dawn so I can actually have 4 player crucible games which is super fun.

I'm a little past 200h on this game according to steam, peanuts compared to the rest of you guys. Hopefully I don't burn out before the expansion hah.

Haha. Yeah mythical relics are a PAIN to craft. Whenever I've crafted one, its using resources across my whole roster of characters. But they're usually worth it. Plus at least its a good currency sink. Just when I think I'm starting to get in game rich I need to craft a mythical which drains everything. I really wish hearts etc, along with aether crystals could be shared. It'd make it so much easier.

Also remember that there's a smith in the necropolis who can convert rare mats into other rare mats. Can be a good way to get what you need, if say, you've got a bunch of ancient hearts, but need some tainted brains

Re PoE, yeah the skill tree probably doesn't do as much as I'd hope. Mostly just stat stick and passive boosts, but playing around with different gem combos is pretty fun, and really gets me in my theorycrafting spot. Though I can't help but feel I might've pushed that as far as it can go atm, and might need to look at some 'GGG approved' builds if I want to do higher map tiers.

And 4 player crucible sounds fun. I've pretty exclusively solo'ed except for helping a friend once to level 15 or so who didn't end up sticking with the game. My other irl friends are pretty casual gamers and can't even get into Diablo so I'm not about to recommend them this. Anyway, I'd be game. I'm lox7697 on Steam if you wanna add for me for some more stompage

I liked Path of Exile up until the end-game where it became slots with sockets/links.

Yeah, that's kinda where I'm at. I've only got a 5L chest piece and 4L weapon and it's sorta working. I remember part of what turned me off originally was seeing the insane odds of getting a 6L, but I'm trying to not worry about that too much now.

The upcoming 3.0 changes actually all sound really good too and I'm keen to have a look at those

I wasn't even lucky enough to get a 5L, which is what I had really needed.

You can now use crafting to guarantee a 5 link, and also to control the colours of the sockets. It's not perfect as it can be a grind, but it's 1000 times better than launch. You're always guaranteed that 5 link now.

I'm lucky to have crafted the 2 mythical relics that I needed so far, simply because they were the easiest of the entire list lol (ulzuin's pyroclasm and agrivix's malice). Even then it took pooled resources and left my witchblade nice and resource-poor.

I'll add you later tonight on steam but I dunno when we're going into crucible again or if we have a full room. I'll extend an invite if we got an open space. Fair warning though, my friends struggle with normal (aspirant?) crucible and waves 135+ may end up being a hard carry.

For PoE I think it just boils down to that. The people who wanted me to jump in even said to look at an internet build and just make that so I can pvp with them. I ended up just playing more GD instead.

Ha, at least you got two of the better mythicals done. Both of those do ALOT of work on a few toons of mine. I'd love to do a melee, aether build at some point to take full advantage of Agrivix, but they're pretty hard to pull off, with pretty limited aether damage support. Its basically limited to arcanist, who is obviously more range focused. The necro is meant to have some built in, but I haven't seen any from what they've shown so far. I'm also not sure how it really fits into necro lore <shrug>

The good thing about the relics is once you have one, you don't need to craft another if you want one for a different toon. It's nice and easy to just swap them around instead

Latest dev twitch stream, Zantai (lead dev) mentioned expansion is basically ready for playtesting sans one or two final bugs they need to iron out. All going well I'm thinking another 4-6 weeks.

4-6 for release? That'd be ultra hype for me.

Enough time for me to keep wracking my brain over what mastery to pair with my upcoming pet necro. Looks like necro is split between cold/aether for combat and poison/vit for summons.

Yeah I think the devs indicated somewhere it would probably need around that long for testing. It's a bit of a guestimate though

For a necro summoner I'm definitely going to be pairing with occultist. With the skelie skill summons, the summon skeletons devotion, and then all the other summons from skills and gear should make for a pretty awesome pet army. I'll def be doing a death knight run as well for roleplaying purposes. Also given they're meant to have an aether component, I'll prob have to pair with an arcanist at some point

I was thinking occultist too but man, I have a lot of occultist secondaries lol. Looking at the rest of the masteries it doesn't look like there's all that much synergy between them and a necro summon main.

Death knight is Necro/Soldier? That sounds pretty cool. I'm thinking Necro/Nightblade myself. Most likely doing some cold damage stacking and seeing what else I can add on top.

Shaman would work too for a summoner, but occultist CoF is way too stonk as a supporting skill. Good chance I'll give both a try at some point though.

And yeah Death Knight is soldier/necro. Probably won't be the most optimal combo, but should make for some good fun

Grim Misadventure #123: Infrequently Monstrous

A Grim Misadventure has arrived! First, some exciting news on the expansion development front: As some of you may have already noticed, the playtesters have been very busy of late…because testing has officially begun on the expansion! What this means is that people outside of the dev team are seeing the expansion’s content/additions for the first time and providing us with bug reports and feedback. This is a critical step in the development process as we strive to clear out major issues/concerns before the expansion is released to the general public.

At this time, the playtesters have access to roughly 50% of the expansion’s content and the leveling experience for the Necromancer and Inquisitor masteries. There’s still much to do and much to be tested, but so far things are going smoothly. We are nearing the end of the line!

A bunch of monster infrequent preview pictures...

With the introduction of Item Skill Modifiers, you can expect to find a skill modifier on every Monster Infrequent weapon/off-hand, medal and helm, just like on the new Legendary items. This goes for old Monster Infrequents as well, which will not only receive higher level versions, but also retroactive additions of the Skill Modifiers.

Biggest news is that testing is underway for the expansion. Should be enough time for me to polish off the rest of the achievements left in the game...

It has a name! And q3 seems about right. Though 1 or 2 other games I play are due for big updates as well around the same time....

Something tells me this'll take precedence though

So for my first character/playthrough I decided to play solo and I've been having fun. Is the co-op a lot of fun if I play online with randoms? None of my friends have this game so I don't know if I'll keep playing after I beat it solo. I also don't have a lot of experience playing aRPGs so I feel kind of 'lost' in a sense that I'm not really sure I'm using the best equipment available to me and I'm worried that I'm upgrading the wrong skills (like physique and cunning, not the actual skills).

It's fine like half way through the second difficulty with random equipment and skills. Plus you can respec at will.
