Grits - explain something to a Canadian

I don't like plain grits.

However, as a way to mix different breakfast foods together, its awesome. 2 over easy eggs and a couple strips of bacon mixed into a scoop of grits is amazing.

Think of it as Southern Curry.

However, I still prefer biscuits and gravy for breakfast.

Grits, with poached eggs and cheese, occasionally some bacon, I've had it for breakfast about once or twice a week since I moved to North Carolina 4 years ago. When I first moved here from New Mexico, I also was adding in some green chile to give some kick, which was pretty good, until I ran out of real New Mexican chiles......Basically a breakfast burrito with the grits in place of the tortilla....

Can someone explain the difference between the different types of grits?

I've had them 3 times and they have been different each time.

1)Cracker Barrel - They were white and grainy. Had no taste
2)Southern Accent (local restaurant) - The were white an clumpy. Tasted pretty good
3)Home made - I bought grits from the Bulk Barn and they were grainy and yellow. Added Shrimp and Cheese. Delicious.

1) Sounds like they undercooked them and didn't season them.
2) Probably less water, properly seasoned
3) You

Grits are pretty bland on their own. Have to add something to them to give some flavor.

Grits=awesome. Put some butter and an egg and a tap of pepper and it's a good starting meal and it takes only a few minutes to make.

I had never heard of grits until I joined the military. It's one of those things that doesn't really exist on the west coast, same with sweet tea. I find both grits and sweet tea disgusting though.

Grits are just a way to transfer straight butter and cheese into your face without feeling bad about eating just butter and cheese.

It's snot that you add flavor to, not really the best dish in the world.

Grits are worthless. People only like them when they load them with tons of butter or cheese + salt and pepper. At which point, they could be any other product... mushed bread or something else.

We just moved to the south about 8 months ago from Ohio, so I'm slowly learning all of this... I have seen people add maple syrup, or salt and bacon, to grits. Southern food is a strange new world. My co-workers have chastised me for not knowing how to fry chicken on several occasions. lol

I've been discovering quite a few soul food/southern food places in Toronto now. Makes me want to plan a trip down south.

Dead wrong, son.

It's true that grits alone are pretty close to tasteless. But the gritty texture and starch content gives grits a very appealing, creamy texture that's good for pairing with other foods.

There's nothing quite like pairing spicy shrimp and sausage with well-made grits.
