Well that's... not good. It sound like they're bitter from not being flirted with..

To be honest, I really like Japanese valentines day. I wish we had it here.
Our Valentine's day seems to be like Japan's white day. But Japan has both.

I love it when women buy men gifts, and confess their romantic feelings for them.

Is it because of Christian culture that in the west, women have no special occasion to confess romantic feelings?

Chocolate boxes are priced like luxury items in Asia, they don't buy chocolate from Walmart or Kinder. Just in Hong Kong where flowers are the minimal expected gift by the average "princess"... around US$ 120 for few roses

Price was not my point at all. It's more about the myriad gifts one has to scramble to think of. Do you get jewelery? Spa treatment, massage? New phone ?

Narrowing it down to chocolate is much less stressful even if the chocolate is expensive as hell. Also, I know about the Asian chocolate boxes and how some even go about making their own chocolate to gift.

Goodness, I have no idea. I don't know what causes differences in culture on things like this. I don't know how Japanese Valentines Day and White Day happened.

.. it doesn't... seem like Christianity would be the reason..

I was about to google for a picture of Karl Marx wearing a fedora, but I don't think I care strongly enough to do that.

My men. Valentine's is a corporate soul sucking holiday. :(

Is it? I mean, it's not like there are giant mega corporations all based around selling Valentine's gifts.

Mostly it's local businesses - flowers, upscale confectionery shops, restaurants. I don't think the really big companies like say Hershey or whatever really make a killing from it, while the smaller places (especially the confectionery shops) need the business to stay afloat for the year.

This thing is like a weird mix of the right ideals and the left ideals, overall though not sure what's the problem with how japan does things it's pretty equal in terms of ideas.

Apparently, in Japan chocolate manufacturers see more than half their annual sales in the week before Valentine's Day (25% on the actual day)

Despite the Marxist rhetoric, Mr Furusawa has since stepped down as head of the group, posting distinctly un-Marxist photographs of his new set of wheels, boasting "thanks to our actions I purchased a Mercedes" as a parting shot.

Japanese work culture is so fucked. The idea that I can't leave work until my boss leaves or that I'm expected to partake in all work events is ridiculous. Productivity is super low in Japan. At the same time they are super sexist. If you're a woman and pregnant forget about getting a job. It's not surprising that birth rates are so low.

The fact that work is so stressful that you have to put your sex & social life on hold is seriously messed up. Japanese people should really look at their society and fix this.

You get chocolate that you can't eat because you have to return it to the person that gave it to you on valentines?

You can eat the chocolate or throw it away. But you are obligated to make/buy a White Day chocolate for that person come March 14. It's considered "paying back" the giver from Valentines Day.

Which is ingenious from a corporate standpoint.

My girlfriend and I had a good laugh at these guys :lol

For the curious, the closest equivalent to the western Valentines Day in Japan would actually be Christmas. That's the "couples day". As said above in this thread, Valentines Day is more about women giving chocolate to the men society expects them to give chocolate to, and White Day a month later is for men to give chocolate to the women who gave them chocolate a month earlier.

My girlfriend was surprised to see men lining up outside in the snow and cold (we're currently in NY, not Japan) to buy flowers today, she had never seen that before!

It's a lot like one of the characters in Welcome to NHK was bitching about in one episode. But then a girl he liked called her back and was like "lolol nvm"
