GTA:LCS -- 333mHz mode?

I just got a chance to spend some time with WhiteMan's copy of GTA:LCS and I gotta say HOLY HELL WTF AMAZING. This game has way more detail than the original GTA3: better textures, better draw distance, better models, better frame rate, better effects (reflections abound), and way more pedestrians. How the fuck did R* North do this? Are they running the PSP in 333 mHz mode? Cuz that would likewise explain the battery drain.

Lotta nice polished touches added to the game. I was beatin' on an old couple when a kid snatched the purse of some gal near me, and the cop that was birddoggin' me took off after him instead. The short missions kick ass -- makes it less tedious to replay them when you fail. Controls are spot-on; driving and shooting are a breeze. For my tastes, it seems almost to good to be true: a full-featured visually top-notch GTA that can be played in hour-long bursts? I'm sold.

Nope. Still running at 222MHZ. Which makes everything more impressive. Izzy mentioned in the official thread the PSP has some tricks up its sleave in hardware which the PS2 has to do in software which helps out. I can't wait until the PSP gets full steam ahead at full power. It is going to be more impressive than PS2 games!

After playing LCS some more I'm almost ready to declare it the best GTA game in the series and the best portable game out there.

None of the shipments have arrived to South FL yet

My local Gamestop told me that by tomorrow they should get it.

Seriously -- it's running at 222? Jesus, that's impressive. It's just staggering how it's not a scaled down GTA -- it's easily fit to hang with the best of the series. In terms of sheer detail, it's somewhere between Vice City and San Andreas.

Second and third generation PSP titles will be really interesting.
Not only developers can improve graphics as always with code optimization but there's even an hardware upgrade to be unlocked in future.

I think they seriously need to get the new batteries out before they unlock 333 mode. I mean look at the battery life with GTA on 222, if 333 would cut that down by a third or so...you're starting to get near laptop battery life.

It cannot be stated any more clearer than this. Handheld GOTY.

Hell special tech acheivement award too.

Any comparisons of running off the memstick versus the umd as far as batter consumption goes?

Its not possible yet. SONY put the nix on it for this release somehow. Maybe a true version checker?

Well for everyone out there with battery problems.. Buy a third party extern battery from Ebay..

I have a 'PowerStation'. It's 3800 Mah, more than two times the original PSP battery.
It'll cost you around 20 bucks or something..

PSP original battery + PowerStation = 12 hours of GTA goodness ON THE GO! :D

Is it larger than the regular battery in size? Wait you're talking about one of those external battery thingies... I have the US version which is buy... who uh.. Mad Catz? Where the hell did I put that thing....

It going to look like this:

You can just pop the external battery in your pocket since it's only 7x7x1 in size.

edit: It also unlocks ultra bright mode and it charges during play.

Probably next year Sony will release an official 3800 mah battery (2x the current battery) and with a new PSP model with 65nm chips battery life should be well over 10 hours.

Sounds cool. When does it come out for my DS tho? =_( =P

What firmware does GTA: LCS require? I hope I can still use WAB... has anyone tried running it in 333mhz, how does it improve?

Can't wait for friday..!

You need 2.0 to play GTA LCS. And none of the version changers work at all.

I am so on the fence on this... I don't know if I can give up 333Mhz wipeout pure + MGA on my memstick for this...

good thing I am broke! (damn you IRS) my virginal PSP will get its cherry poped sometime later!

So doesn't that mean it requires 2.50? Why wouldn't the version changers work if it only requires 2.0?

Sigh... I'm still not ready to give up a portable Amiga..... this is getting painful!

it seems alot of EMUs still work with 2.0.... just not the uber haxxor fastloader 0.7

/cry

because it actually requires some of the changed firmware files in 2.0 and it isnt a case of it just checking the version number...

couldnt u just upgrade to 2.0 for GTA then after a few weeks of playing just downgrade back to 1.5 when ur finished with it, not much trouble really.

Would people who don't enjoy the GTA3+ games all that much find it more enjoyable because of the gameplay differences?

Ah, Wipeout just had framerate fluctuations. That makes sense. I thought it was constant (I've only played it once). Supposedly switching to 333 mhz fixes the slowdown problem in Winning Eleven too.

Not just fluctuations but playing at 333 Mhz bumps the framerate from 30 fps to 60 fps for Wipeout. That's a pretty damn healthy jump!

That's weird. The game reads the clock speed and adjusts accordingly... I suppose it was probably developed for 333 mhz and if I was a dev I'd leave that mode in... Well, cool.
